Proverbs 1:4

Proverbs 1:4

4 To give [nathan] subtilty [`ormah] to the simple [p@thiy], to the young man [na`ar] knowledge [da`ath] and discretion [m@zimmah].   KJV-Interlinear

4 to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth   ESV

This verse introduces two categories of people for which the Bible and Bible teaching, are beneficial. The simple and the young. The simple refers to open-mindedness and the willingness to learn. The young refers to discernment and shrewdness with regard to sorting through the information that is learned.

The word simple, has nothing to do with the sophistication levels of life.

The word young, has nothing to do with physical age.

Therefore Bible doctrine, which is available to everyone, will only benefit those who want to learn, and are willing to learn, and examine and reflect on the information that they do learn, so as not to be duped or taken advantage of, or deceived, or led down the paths of false teaching.

The world is full of philosophies and idealism’s which sound good on the surface, and cater only to the drives of the sin nature, but have no substance nor basis in truth.

Only Bible doctrine, which is learned through the legitimate spiritual learning process, enters into the soul and binds itself to the soul, transforming the entire life and essence of the individual, and constructs a sophisticated spiritual structure within the soul that lasts forever.

False teaching is temporary only, and does nothing more than mislead and misdirect the person’s life.

And the only way to avoid false teaching, is to pursue instruction in the word of God, listen to, test and compare the information being taught, and do so while under the control of the Holy Spirit, which control only exists when the believer is in fellowship.

And by the way, there is no emotional or physical sensation with regard to the Holy Spirit, when you are in fellowship. So do not be fooled by holy roller claims of Holy Spirit experiences.

We live in the dispensation of the Church Age. Ours is the only dispensation where we have the completed Canon of Scripture.

We live in an age where there is no revelation from God, no dreams or visions, no voices in the head or writings on the wall.

We live in the age of the Royal Family. For in Christ we are made royalty, family of God, firstborn sons, joint heirs to eternity to come. Our spiritual life is tied to the written words in the Bible. That is our only source of communication from God, and that is why God magnified His word above His name, because our spiritual life depends entirely on the teaching of the word of God and our learning it, and growing up in our spiritual life.

Through doctrine, we have been given everything that we need in order to advance ourselves to spiritual maturity and prepare ourselves for the next life.

There are no miracles, no magic, no smoke and mirrors with which we look to, for answers to the secrets of the universe.

All answers come through Bible doctrine, learned by means of the spiritual process which God has designed. Such that through doctrine we are able to learn and discern what is right and what is wrong, what is truth and what is false.

The only thing that stands in our way, is our-self, and our unwillingness to listen, to learn, to consider what is being taught.

Teachability and examination are the two key ingredients in the learning process of spiritual life.

Isaiah 30:17

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 30:17

17 One ['echad] thousand ['eleph] shall flee at [paniym] the rebuke [g@`arah] of one ['echad]; at [paniym] the rebuke [g@`arah] of five [chamesh] shall ye flee [nuwc]: till ye be left [yathar] as a beacon [toren] upon the top [ro'sh] of a mountain [har], and as an ensign [nec] on an hill [gib`ah].   KJV-Interlinear

17 A thousand shall flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you shall flee, till you are left like a flagstaff on the top of a mountain, like a signal on a hill.   ESV

Courage is the quality that allows a person to face danger, without fear. There are two types of courage. Genuine courage is formulated from the resources within ones soul, and is only as strong as those resources. And then there is superficial courage, which is formulated from resources that are external to oneself, such as wealth, power, status, insurance, alliances, and such similar things.

The superficial courage is dependent on external resources, and therefore rises and falls when those external resources grow or fade.

Genuine courage draws his fearlessness from the confidence that is developed because of the content of persons soul.

Bible doctrine is the ultimate courage builder.

Worldliness is the ultimate courage faker.

The Israelites looked to Egypt for their safety and security against the threat of the Assyrians. The Israelites placed their courage on the alliance that they had, or thought they had, with Egypt.

God is the ultimate courage and Bible doctrine is the ultimate courage builder. Without either of these, any courage that a person has, or thinks he has, is both temporary and false.

To have courage, a person has to rely on something. Without Bible doctrine in the soul, then all you have to rely on, are the things of the world. And when those things fade away, then your courage fades, and all you are left with is fear. And when fear is all that is in your life, then panic and terror seize control of your life, and emotion takes over.

History has demonstrated time and again, that when a person depends on their wealth, or their success, or their power, or their status, and such things, and then when those things disappear, they panic and run, and even commit suicide because the content of their soul is weak.

A person with Bible doctrine in their soul, which has been developed over the course of time, has the resource of doctrine to sustain them through any and all hardships.

And we see in this verse what will happened to the Israelites, who had numerical superiority, when a smaller force of Assyrians, invades.

Without doctrine, a very small force, can send a much larger force into rapid retreat and disarray. And, that is exactly what did happen to the Israelites, and what has happened to numerous peoples throughout history, and will happen again in the end days of history.

But panic and terror are not restricted to wartime only. When an economy collapses, the hearts and minds of people can collapse also. And especially in our current day when we have so many entitlement programs, and so many people are becoming dependent on those entitlement programs, rather than dependent on their own resources and abilities, then if and when an economy collapses, and the entitlement programs disappear, then the panic and heartache and suffering will escalate rapidly. And when that happens all kinds of social problems manifest themselves.

History is filled with examples of spiritually weak people who are overrun and destroyed. History is also filled with examples of spiritually strong people who are overrun, but they are able to collect themselves and stand against the assault of overwhelming odds.

In the final part of this verse, the flagstaff on the mountain, or the ensign on a hill, both refer to what little is left when a spiritually weak people have nothing but empty souls, and weakness, and fear and terror ruling their lives.

The flagstaff here refers to the mainmast of the sunken ship. The ship, once large and mighty and grand, now lies beneath the sea, and all that is seen is the top of the mainmast.

The ensign or the banner, refers to the symbol of the people that have been destroyed, such as a flag. Once carried high and proud as a symbol of their prosperity, but also their arrogance, now lies tattered and torn on the top of the hill for all to see, for there is nothing left.

Bible doctrine is the source building material for the structure of the soul. With doctrine there is knowledge, understanding, discernment, wisdom, and all of the ingredients for spiritual maturity, and faith, and courage. These things go beyond the written words of the Bible, but reach into every nook and cranny of the soul, building a fortress that is impenetrable and superior to anything and everything that exists in the world.

The Bible says that God will not test you beyond your ability. And that refers to the application of world activities and events as they pertain to the content of your soul. As you grow in your spiritual life, you will face more things, and you will be able to see for yourself that you are able to deal with more things in life.

This serves as a test to prove the content of your soul, but it also serves to show you the extent of your spiritual growth.

As with a child, it is difficult to know when you have grown up.

But as an adult, your level of maturity is demonstrated by how you deal with life.

Isaiah 30:16

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 30:16

16 But ye said ['amar], No; for we will flee [nuwc] upon horses [cuwc]; therefore shall ye flee [nuwc]: and, We will ride [rakab] upon the swift [qal]; therefore shall they that pursue [radaph] you be swift [qalal].   KJV-Interlinear

16 and you said, “No! We will flee upon horses”; therefore you shall flee away; and, “We will ride upon swift steeds”; therefore your pursuers shall be swift.   ESV

Too many people today do exactly the same thing that the Israelites did back in Isaiah’s day, namely they ignore the counsel of God. They not only ignore the counsel of God, but they presume that whatever it is they think and say and do now, is the counsel of God, when it is not. Refusal to be taught, refusal to listen and learn, are the main ingredients for a disastrous spiritual life.

In the previous verse Isaiah states exactly how people can escape disaster. And that is very simple. People simply need to listen and learn from instruction, the teaching of the Bible. But not only that, they need to be in fellowship, which requires compliance with Gods spiritual process, namely confession of sin to God the Father, on a regular basis.

But, the people in Isaiah’s day said, no.

They refused to hear the teaching, they refused to look to God. They instead turned to Egypt for their safety and security. And not only that, they had a common thought and purpose, which is simply stated here. We will flee upon horses, we will ride upon swift steeds. And the idea there is that carries an air of confidence and presumption that whatever comes, their alliance with Egypt will provide them the swift means of maneuvering, or of escape.

And Isaiah turns their own words back on them stating, therefore you will flee. And the meaning of flee here is to run in terror.

In the second statement, your pursuers shall be swift, means simply that the invaders will be faster, and their escape will be disastrous.

Anyone who ignores, or is indifferent toward, or rejects the study of the word of God in their life, will discover that their own attitude, their own beliefs, will become the description of their own demise.

And so it was with the Israelites, when Assyria invaded, Egypt did nothing.

A life without doctrine, is a life in sin, in evil, in reliance on the world.

A reliance on the world is no reliance at all.

And when you depend on something that is nothing, then you get nothing.

Psalm 37:34

Copyright  2015 J. Neely
Psalm 37:34

34 Wait [qavah] on the LORD [Y@hovah], and keep [shamar] his way [derek], and he shall exalt [ruwm] thee to inherit [yarash] the land ['erets]: when the wicked [rasha`] are cut off [karath], thou shalt see [ra'ah] it.   KJV-Interlinear

34 Wait for the LORD and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off.   ESV

Among the many things that are going to happen at the end of human history, here we are told that you as a believer in Christ are going to be a witness when all unbelievers are finally terminated from existence.

The word here for cut off, means, to put to an end, such that the thing being put to an end is terminated permanently. Therefore this is a reference to unbelievers, which are herein called wicked, but this does not refer to Christians who happen to be following a wicked path during their life.

The end of history is in reference here, because believers will be a witness to this final action against unbelievers.

Throughout history, wicked people of the world have been removed, and sometimes this removal is witnessed, or heard about or read about by others. But never in history prior to this, have people all over the world actually seen their removal.

And we are told in this Psalm, that you will look on. And, looking on, means just that. You will actually see the event of unbeliever removal, when Christ executes the final judgment against all unbelievers.

We know from the book of Revelation, that there will be one final resurrection of unbelievers at the end of the millennium.

They will all stand before Christ at the Great White Throne. This is a judgment, a final judgment, that everyone should fear with great fear and not want to be a part of. But when history ends, all unbelievers will be resurrected and brought before Christ, and they are given their final judgment, which is the Lake of Fire. And then that judgment will be carried out and they will all be removed from our sight.

We as believers in Christ, will be in the audience, so to speak, when this all occurs.

And then after the final judgment for unbelievers, we will all again witness the destruction of this universe, and then the creation of a new universe, and then we will enter into life for the rest of eternity. That is our last and final and greatest inheritance.

And while unbelievers will have been sent to the ultimate disgrace, we as believers will receive the ultimate exultation in our inheritance.
