11 These things [tauta] command [paraggello] and [kai] teach. [didasko] KJV-Interlinear

11 Prescribe and teach these things. NASB

‘These things,’ is a reference to the doctrines and Biblical principles that Paul has been giving to Timothy, in the previous verses. Namely to study and teach sound doctrine, and live by it. That is a principle that applies to you and to me, and to all Christians everywhere.

Command or prescribe, ‘paraggello,’ means to present truth with command with confidence, with certainty, to order, to mandate, to call into obedience.

Study so that you know, and teach what is true and correct.

The Bible is filled with words like, behold, or hear, or he who has an ear, or listen. And these words are designed to gain the attention of people so that they will listen and hear the truth of life, and then use it.

Unfortunately the teaching in our day is preaching rather than teaching. It is intriguing, or entertaining, or popular, or interesting. It is designed to gain the short term attention of people through emotion, rather than inculcating within them, a foundation of sound doctrine.

Far too often people are enticed with music or cult notions, or hidden codes that do not exist within the Bible, but are external from it, and are used to explain something in the Bible.

However, the Bible contains within itself, all that is necessary to understand what it has to say. Even the prophecies of tomorrow are explainable through the content of the Bible without the use of external sources. If external sources were required, then they would have been referenced within the Bible, and would have been available throughout history. But most external secret codes and such are nothing more than modern era or contemporary inventions intended for marketing purposes, having nothing to do with truth.

In other areas, the Bible is set aside for more emotional activities, to gain attention and retain memberships. Unfortunately modern society has a shorter attention span, than in former times.

Teaching or instruction must be commanding (lecture), convicting (truth), powerful (repercussions), and transforming (change for the better). All of the things that most students resist and thus bring failure in their studies.

The notion of having open discussions, of hearing or listening to new ideas, of accepting the views of others, of considering that there is more than one truth or more than one view, is a subtle attempt at watering down and compromising what the Bible has to teach.

Command means to order, to mandate, to call into obedience. And that is what Bible doctrine does.

Teach means to instruct repetitively, step by step, bit by bit, little by little, until the whole of the subject is thoroughly understood. This is accomplished by a strong commitment to the authority of the scriptures, not by looking to outside sources, but by proper interpretation of the scriptures by means of exegetical study and categorical assembly, and historical setting, in order to gain the correct meaning of what is being said.

In 1776, brave and wise men wrote the greatest document in all of human history, the Constitution of these United States. It set out limitations on government in order to insure the rights and freedoms of the individual.

From that early time, this nation has prospered to beyond boundaries never known by any nation ever before in history. Just as our constitution sets out to guard the individual, so too the Bible is the source document to assure freedom and prosperity for the individual for all of eternity.

However, truth is always under attack, and in an attempt to destroy both, the constitution has been under attack these many decades by a liberalism called progressivism, and the Bible has been under attack by a liberalism called compromise.

Both of which attempt to remove very subtly, the rights and freedoms of the individual, replacing them with an all knowing and all powerful elite group of people, who believe that they can make our decisions for us, and believing that they can make better decisions than we can on our own.

In order to gain centralized power, one must first destroy the faith of the masses through watered down principles, and destroy free choice through regulatory controls. And to do that the fundamental framework of documents like our constitution or the scriptures, must be discredited, set aside, and rendered powerless.

Those who teach openness or promote faith by means of emotion or social activities, contribute to the weakness of a society.

And you may very well see and begin to understand just why society is failing to understand the basic principles of life, and it is because too many do not knuckle down to a daily study of the scriptures, and slug it out through a word by word, line by line learning process.

1 Timothy 4:10

DailyBibleStudy.Org

10 For [gar] therefore [eis] [touto] we [kopiao] both [kai] labour [kopiao] and [kai] suffer reproach, [oneidizo] because [hoti] we trust [elpizo] in [epi] the living [zao] God, [theos] who [hos] is [esti] the Saviour [soter] of all [pas] men, [anthropos] specially [malista] of those that believe. [pistos] KJV-Interlinear

10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. NASB

Why do we teach or study doctrine? Because it is our hope, our present hope and our future hope, of achieving the highest level of spiritual growth that we can possibly achieve, namely spiritual maturity.

Why? Because it is there where our spiritual life is maximized and completed, and it is our maturity on which our future rewards and blessings are based.

One day, we will stand before Christ, at the Judgment Seat of Christ, 2 Cor. 5:10, and it is at that point in time that we will receive our eternal reward. Those who achieve spiritual maturity, combined with production, will receive phenomenal rewards and blessings.

Those who ignore their spiritual life, pretend to pursue a spiritual life, make up their own rules of spirituality, ignore instruction, reject the teaching authority of a legitimate instructor, become an authority unto themselves, think that they know better than you, and so forth, will be very disappointed when they stand before Christ.

Therefore, it is for this future hope, that we endure, that we labor, that we suffer during this life, because of the promise of the next life.

This is not inordinate suffering, above and beyond what others are exposed to in life. Life in this world comes with suffering regardless of your circumstances.

One of the biggest reliefs that a person can have comes when they die, and the burdens of this world are immediately lifted from them. But we endure, and continue in this life because there is a huge reward available in the next life.

One of the most used examples in this life to symbolize the potentials of the next life is wealth. That is what most people can understand. Would you prefer to be a billionaire or a peasant? And again, most ‘normal’ folks would rather be the rich dude. Who among you would turn down a billion dollar inheritance? Not one of you. Unless you are a fool of course. Many of the parables speak to this example.

But our hope is more than just wealth, it is wrapped up in many things that bring us an eternal life without burdens, without disappointments, without all of the negatives that exist in this world.

The words for labor, and suffer or strive, refer to working to the point of exhaustion, to struggle against huge odds. And that is what life is. It is a huge uphill battle just to gain an inch in life, and when you have that inch you will probably lose it. With but a few exceptions in this world, the vast majority of people struggle with finances, with just trying to make a living, with trying to keep caught up as best they can.

But there is no shortage of folks out there, who will go overboard to bring you down, who will try to make you stumble, who will gossip against you, who would love to see you fail. And for what reason? Simply because they are nothing more than the agents of evil. This we studied not too long ago.

If you have been following along in the Revelation study, then you are well aware of the phenomenal, repeat, phenomenal rewards that are available to those who advance to, and maintain, their spiritual maturity status. The rewards of simply pursuing truth, are mind boggling. And those who refuse to pursue truth, pursue what? Lies.

We pursue a living God, 1 Sam 17:26; 2 Kings 19:4, 16; Ps 42:2; 84:2.

We do not pursue a dead god, an idol, a made up god, an invented god, an invented philosophy, or things that cannot and do not provide anything except lies. We do not respect anything that promotes lies. We tolerate the opinions of others and their beliefs, but we do not respect them. Why would you respect something that will send someone to the Lake of Fire, and/or destroy their entire eternal future?

There are far too many folks out there who think you are intolerant if you do not allow them to enter their compromised beliefs into your beliefs. There are folks who think you intolerant if you do not agree to disagree. There are folks that believe that all beliefs (all roads) lead to the same pearly gates and beyond.

You are to be pure in your spiritual life, and that means free of all taints and flaws and falsities that others have. Your entire future depends on your objectivity and discernment, and your adherence to truth.

And for that, you will be exposed to all sorts of burdens from life, burdens from your own thoughts, from other people, from bureaucracies, from the natural events and circumstances of the world.

Jesus Christ is the savior. This verse is the most abused and distorted verse of them all. Other religions will tell you that everyone is saved, simply because of this verse, but they only do this to tease you and to twist truth.

The Bible must be read in its entirety, not by cherry picking a verse or two for convenience, or making the words to mean what you want them to mean.

And this verse does not say that all people are saved, only that Jesus Christ (God), is the savior. And the savior of who? He went to the cross and paid the price for the sins of the entire human race. Therefore, making salvation available to all people. It is for people to believe in Him, and thus accept the salvation promise, before they are saved.

The Bible clearly teaches that those who reject Christ will be sentenced to hell, Rev 20:11-15. That the duration of that punishment will be eternal, Matt 25:41, 46.

Christ spoke of the extreme danger of hell, Matt 8:12; 13:41-42, 49-50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30; Luke 13:28.

Therefore, salvation is available to everyone, but it is only possessed by those who actually believe in Christ.

And that is why this verse says, especially believers. For it is only they, who have accepted, through faith, the work which Christ did on the Cross, who will be saved.

1 Timothy 4:9

DailyBibleStudy.Org

9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. KJV-Interlinear

9 It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. NASB

Paul follows verse eight with this statement, ‘This is a self evident truth.’

The fact that emphasis on the spiritual life is more profitable and more beneficial, than any emphasis on the physical body should be keenly obvious to everyone.

The physical side of life will last only as long as your lifespan, and then is ends.

The spiritual side of life runs concurrently with your physical life, but continues on into the next life and will run forever, without ever ending. That means for all of eternity.

So, this is a short study today, because the emphasis is on the importance of your spiritual life. To live your life now, with little or no attention paid to your spiritual life, is the decision of a fool.

Your destiny exists in eternity, and not in this present life. Whatever it is that you do in this life (work, school, play, etc.), is merely filling the role of logistical support for your life now, such that you will have the means to spend time on your spiritual life.

Concurrent with your physical life, you have the opportunity to learn fundamental principles of life, such as responsibility, accountability, honesty, and so forth.

Most folks unfortunately place emphasis on their current life, and ignore their spiritual life. They pursue their education, their work, their accumulation of wealth or hobbies or whatever, and they give little or no attention to their spiritual life. And those who do have some semblance of a spiritual life, generally make only a courteous gesture toward their spiritual life when it is convenient. And unfortunately their spiritual life is nothing more than a pretense.

What God has waiting for each person, is a vast blessing and reward package for eternity, but in order to receive it, you have to advance to spiritual maturity.

Unlike in this world where vary few can achieve great wealth, in eternity everyone has the opportunity to receive vast wealth, beyond ones wildest dreams, beyond ones imagination. And it is there just for the taking, so to speak.

Wouldn’t you love to be a multi-billionaire or multi-trillionaire now? Well, most folks certainly would not turn down that paycheck. However, by ignoring the spiritual life, you are doing just that.

Therefore, place emphasis on your spiritual growth to maturity, do not ignore it, and your life now, and especially in the next life, you will be very glad you did.

1 Timothy 4:8

8 For [gar] bodily [somatikos] exercise [gumnasia] profiteth [esti] [ophelimos] little [pros]: [oligos] but [de] godliness [eusebeia] is [esti] profitable [ophelimos] unto [pros] all things, [pas] having [echo] promise [epaggelia] of the life [zoe] that now is, [nun] and [kai] of that which is to come. [mello] KJV-Interlinear

8 for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. NASB

In our present day, there is a great deal of emphasis on the physical aspects of ones life. The airwaves are saturated with physical fitness marketing plans, diet plans, body shaping clothing, wellness of the heart and body and bones and on and on.

And not that there is anything wrong with keeping oneself physically fit, for it is certainly recommended for us all, but any and all physical activities are limited as to their extent (you can only do so much for or to yourself), and their duration (it all ends when you die).

And what happens to that beautifully sculptured body of yours when you die? It goes into the grave and becomes far less than pleasant in just a matter of hours. Eventually it disintegrates altogether.

However, Bible doctrine is good both now in this life, but it will also last forever. Bible doctrine is permanent.

Bible doctrine is the basis for your spiritual growth and overall health.

Health? Will it cure your ailments? No. But a peace of mind certainly contributes to ones inner peace and tranquility verses the stresses and worries of the world. So, spiritual growth overflows to the peace of the physical body, whereas, the physical body exercises will not and cannot overflow into the spiritual realm of the soul.

You cannot hum, reflect, meditate, or think your way through spiritual tranquility or growth. You cannot pump iron or run or do anything physical that will promote your spiritual life.

Your most valuable and precious possession in your spiritual life. It not only will last you forever, but it is the basis for your eternal rewards, which are potentially (for mature believers) vast and beyond imagination.

And as for this life, God guides the spiritually mature believer through life, regardless of the hazards that we will all come face to face with during our lives.

1 Timothy 4:7

7 But [de] refuse [paraiteomai] profane [bebelos] and [kai] old wives [graodes]' fables, [muthos] and [de] exercise [gumnazo] thyself [seautou] rather unto [pros] godliness. [eusebeia] KJV-Interlinear

7 But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; NASB

Pursue truth, not false things. Fables, is a reference for stories, tales, things made up, whether from years gone by or contemporary popular views.

Fables serve only to distract from truth, only to perpetuate discussions or arguments.

This is not a reference to childrens stories or things that serve to symbolize principles of truth and honor.

Fables, ‘muthos,’ refers to myths, fiction, ideas that pretend to be wise, false instruction as in false principles or norms or standards.

Many a person who pursues religion or cults in its many forms, or politics, or social engineering concepts, will approach life and these subjects as though they are all open to discussion or debate, if only to exercise an open minded approach to life. To explore other views or ideas. To appear as though one is progressive or wise in life.

These things are all wrapped up in the word, fables.

Remember there are only two views in the universe, Gods and Satan's. Truth is from God, everything else is from Satan. Truth stands on its own. Lies have to have discussion otherwise they would never stand up in anything.

Truth is always apparent to those who possess knowledge or the desire to learn it.

Lies have to be veiled in deceptive phrases, and appeal only to those who are naïve or ignorant of truth. Lies find their followers only in the fools of the world.

How does the saying go? ‘Show me the followers of false things, and I will show you fools.’

Old women, ‘graodes,’ is an expression which has been popular since time immemorial. It is used as a criticism, or in a derogatory or insulting sense.

In ancient times, women were denied the many advantages of men. They grew up without education or training. And this is the background of the general sense of the expression. Lacking education, they grew old and came up with the most bizarre of notions about life. Thus wives tales or fables or myths come from this expression of invented viewpoints. They are beliefs based on gossip and lies.

For example:

An acorn should be carried to bring luck and ensure a long life.
Pull the petals off of a flower saying with each pull, he/she loves me, he/she loves me not. The last petal pulled decides your love fate.
Spit on a new baseball bat before using it for the first time to make it lucky.
To protect yourself from witches, wear a blue bead.
If a woman is buried in black, she will return to haunt the family.

And so you can look up wives tales online and discover the many gems of wisdom that you have been missing in your life.

However, people will make things up out of nothing, and believe them, but they will read the Bible which has phenomenal truth and history and reliability, and they will not believe it. They will even go so far as to make up arguments that they say discredit the Bible, which is a popular approach against truth for people of other religions. But, if you analyzed their arguments closely, then you would see that they are made up of the same things that wives tales are made up of, namely invented or tainted data.

And this is of course not limited to cute stories, but extends into more serious topics such as government policy, social norms, and especially views of what is or is not important in life.

Everything, every view in this world, is designed to distract you away from God, Christ, and doctrine. Why? Because, do you remember what the ultimate source, of all of these lies, is? Doctrines of demons or Satan.

Life in this world is not restricted to our immediate environment, but ultimately controlled or under a strong influence from evil out of the angelic conflict.

Do you remember what your ultimate destiny is? Not to be focused only on this life, but to be prepared for the next life. One day this world will end, just as one day your life will end. And you need to be prepared for that future.

And that preparation comes from, ‘exercise in Godliness.’

Exercise is the repetition of motion or action which builds up and tones and hones the body. Godliness is your spiritual life.

Therefore, your mandate is to tone up, hone up, your spiritual attributes, your spiritual life. And there is only one way to do that. Study, listen, learn, and grow up in your spiritual life. That comes from doctrine, not from fables, not from the opinions of this world.

1 Timothy 4:6

6 If thou put [hupotithemi] the brethren [adelphos] in remembrance [hupotithemi] of these things, [tauta] thou shalt be [esomai] a good [kalos] minister [diakonos] of Jesus [Iesous] Christ, [Christos] nourished up [entrepho] in the words [logos] of faith [pistis] and [kai] of good [kalos] doctrine, [didaskalia] whereunto [hos] thou hast attained. [parakoloutheo] KJV-Interlinear

6 In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following. NASB

God evaluates teachers, instructors, leaders, anyone who possesses some form of authority over others, whether they be armies or nations, social organizations or church organizations, business organizations or children in a family.

Most of your life is utilized in fulfilling some role in teaching others, whether academically or by example, whether observed by those you know, or by those who you do not know.

The sum total of your life is evaluated by God and only God, and is based on the content of your soul. That is the foundation for all of your thoughts and actions in life.

If you are only impressed by credentials, by lavish architecture, by portfolio’s, by social status, by education, and so forth, then your eyes are on the wrong things.

Here Gods evaluation of the successful teacher, is in his message. And his message must be accurate and present the things that we have just been studying. Namely the principles of Christianity verses the false doctrines out there which attempt to destroy truth.

Anyone who is in it for the pomp or attention, for the power or the authority, for the approbation or the things that drive the ego, has missed the whole point of life.

God provides you with everything that is important to Him, and necessary for you. God has placed everyone on this earth not to acclimate to and bond with this world, but to prepare for the next and greater life, of eternity.

Those who have a lot, and use it only for their earthly gratification, have failed. Those who have a little and complain or blame, have failed.

Only those who invest in their spiritual life (as defined by God), will succeed with a success that will last forever, and will far surpass any success recorded in human history.

Those who look only to this world for their satisfaction, will lose it all when they are called out of the world. Then their eyes will open and they will see their error. But why wait until after you have left the world before you figure it all out?

Paul is writing to Timothy, but he is also writing to you and me. If we pursue sound doctrine, and he used the word ‘constantly,’ then you will acquire the faithful servant title, just as Paul has described here for Timothy.

You have an obligation to learn doctrine and to keep on learning it. If you study the Bible objectively for all of your life, you will never learn it all.

And if you remember in our earlier study, the truth that is available to us in this world is only the tip of the iceberg of knowledge that exists. We will have to wait until we are in heaven, and have accomplished spiritual maturity in this life prior to that, in order to have access to that greater blessing of knowledge.

1 Timothy 4:5

DailyBibleStudy.Org

5 For [gar] it is sanctified [hagiazo] by [dia] the word [logos] of God [theos] and [kai] prayer. [enteuxis] KJV-Interlinear

5 for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer. NASB

It, refers to Gods creation. Anything that God has created, is good. And anything that God has created is sanctified, or set apart from evil, for the benefit of the spiritual life.

Therefore, when a person believes in Christ, he too has been set apart, or sanctified unto God. That means that the work of salvation has created you into a new spiritual species, and something good.

Not only that, but anything and everything that God has created, now belongs to, and for, you, because of His grace.

God did not create life or this universe for evil, for unbelievers, for Satan and his crowd, He created all of these things for you.

The next time you are outside on a clear night, look up into the night sky and imagine that the universe, which goes on seemingly forever, was put there, for you.

God could have created something much smaller, but He not only created something vast, but extremely complicated. Watch the science channel sometime when it has a show on the universe or any science for that matter, and just imagine that all of those things, which exist beyond our knowledge, were created, designed, defined, etc., by God. And He did it all for believers.

But more than just for believers, God especially did it all for mature believers.

‘By the Word of God and prayer.’

This phrase wraps up your entire spiritual growth process, a process which makes you complete. Without doctrine in your soul, you are an incomplete person.

The word of God is the content of the scriptures, or Bible doctrine.

Prayer is more than just, ‘Now I lay me down to sleep…’ Prayer is the mode of worship that incorporates your whole attitude and dedication and obedience to God. It is your daily study that makes it possible for you to learn, to understand, to possess the knowledge and wisdom that comes only through a dedicated effort and commitment toward your spiritual life.

It is not your doing things, that makes your spiritual life. Unbelievers can do things. Unbelievers can get married, or abstain from marriage. They can eat foods or abstain from eating foods. They can say all of the right spiritual phrases, just as anyone can.

But your true thanksgiving to God, comes from within yourself, from within your inner soul, and that comes only from the content that exists within your soul. Which content cannot be there unless you have first learned doctrine. And you cannot learn doctrine if you do not commit yourself to a daily study.

Doctrine is the food for the soul. Physical food is for the body. You eat foods everyday, and likewise your soul needs daily nourishing. You spend time on eating and nourishing something physical (your body) which is a temporary vessel in this life, why not spend time on nourishing something that is eternal.

For it is that eternal state where you will live the vast portion of your life. And you certainly want to live in the vast wealth that God has promised you, rather than losing out on all of those blessings that are dedicated for mature believers only. This is a reference to the blessings that belong to mature believers, which blessings we studied earlier in this letter, and also the blessings that are covered in Rev. 2-3.

All good things are set apart for mature believers, through doctrine, by means of learning and growing up to maturity. Your objective in life, is to advance to spiritual maturity, through your daily study. For it is only though the knowledge and wisdom of doctrine, that you can fully appreciate all that God has done for you.

4 For [hoti] every [pas] creature [ktisma] of God [theos] is good, [kalos] and [kai] nothing [oudeis] to be refused, [apobletos] if it be received [lambano] with [meta] thanksgiving: [eucharistia] KJV-Interlinear

4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with gratitude; NASB

At the close of the restoration of the earth, God pronounced that everything that He had made, was good, Gen. 1:31.

All things that come from God are good. There is nothing bad that ever comes from God. The bad things of this world, all of them, come as the result of Satan’s sin, not God.

Rom 11:36
36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. NASB

When Adam and Eve were in the Garden, all was perfect. When they sinned, then the decay of creation began for humanity. It had already started for the universe when Satan rebelled, Rom. 8:22.

Why are there bad things in this world? Because of Satan’s rebellion first, and mans sin second.

Were it not for either of these, and they will all be put away when history ends, then nothing bad would or will every exist again. God created perfection, both man and angel rebelled against perfection.

And when you reject perfection, then you have imperfection. That is really not a complicated concept to understand.

So, God gave us marriage, God gave us food, and so on and so forth. These things are sanctified (set apart) for good and should be taken with full appreciation and enjoyment, and thankfulness.

The word for thanksgiving, ‘eucharistia,’ means gratefulness. Were it not for God, we would have nothing.

Remember the big picture here. We are dust, specks of dust. And how much significance does dust have in this universe? None. That makes each one of us, insignificant.

But God took dust and formed beautiful people. Sin caused deformities, etc.

God took dust and inserted human life into it. God gave humanity the free will to think and make decisions with rational cognitive thought. What has man done in comparison? Nothing even close.

Why would anyone take something that God has done for our good, and arbitrarily make it out to be bad?

Only those who promote false concepts. Only those who want to control your thinking for the benefit of their own ego or control or their lust for power.

The fundamental error of apostate teaching, is found in its rejection of truth. All false teaching, all false opinions, all false religions, all false anything, is a denial and rejection of Gods Word, which is truth.

[aletheia] KJV-Interlinear

3 men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods, which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. NASB

We have already seen how people will take what is stated in the Bible, and restate it out of context, so they can use it to serve their own purpose. Namely the previously studied roles of men and women. Do you even remember what they stood for?

Now, Paul uses two more examples of externalism, which have been used in history, as attempts to gain salvation or spiritualism through mans works.

History is full of cultures doing things to themselves, to their bodies, by forcing physical changes in themselves, in order to meet some higher purpose. Some cultures tie their feet up, some try to extend their necks, some poke sticks through their cheeks or ears, or arms, etc. And some try to define how society is to live together.

The Essenes practiced asceticism, denying marriage and enforcing special dietary regulations for the accomplishment of their spirituality.

Gnosticism boasted of a secret, hidden knowledge or code. They rejected the body as part of the evil, physical world.

And there are many more who believe that they must suffer at least as much if not more than Christ, in order to earn their acceptance in heaven.

However, God created both marriage and food and pronounced them both good, Gen 1:28-31; 2:18-24; 9:3.

Anything that conflicts with the Bible is false.

We are to find our completion in Christ, not in the external things of this life. Food, clothing, pain and such are not the spiritual life. Bible doctrine is Christ, and when you learn doctrine, then you put Christ inside of you, and fulfill your life unto Him as He intended.

You cannot earn, nor do you deserve spiritual brownie points.

All spiritual advantages come to you through grace, as a gift of God, and by no other means.

2 Speaking lies [pseudologos] in [en] hypocrisy; [hupokrisis] having [kauteriazo] their [idios] conscience [suneidesis] seared with a hot iron; [kauteriazo] KJV-Interlinear

2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, NASB

When we get to the study of Ephesians, we will study the scar tissue of the soul. You might want to sometime review the charts, on the web site, of the human soul for both believers and unbelievers. There are three charts.

The searing of the soul is in view here.

We have studied already that the Bible (the Spirit), has stated that there is going to be an apostasy coming, such as has never before occurred in history. This from our long study of verse one. That single verse study took us about five days to complete.

We have learned that all evil, all false doctrine, comes from only one source, namely Satan. Satan is the father of lies, and those who follow him (demons) promote his lies as well.

Their system of lies has saturated the world through history, by means of various communications to humanity by demons, through the occult, through the various systems of reading cards, or bones, or the stars, or astrology, or numbers, and so forth. And though many folks see these things as seemingly harmless, they are in effect the most dangerous things in all of history.

History has recorded many leaders who have consulted seers, or witches, or persons who claim to have access to the ‘other side.’ And you should not be surprised that, that practice is observed even in our current day.

Anyway, Satan's philosophy is readily available to humanity, by various means.

And all lies are in effect, hypocrisy, which is nothing more than duplicity, deceit, pretense, double standards, insincerity and so forth.

The speaking of lies, is on the human side of the coin, whereas the source of the lies is on the satanic side.

Satan starts the lie, and man promotes and continues it, even to the point of enhancing it to his advantage or convenience.

Speaking lies, ‘pseudologos,’ means the purveyor of deceit, or lie-speakers. And again, Satan is the source, but humanity is the agent of his lies. And the result of all lies, or all false doctrines, or all false opinions, is the establishment of gangrene in the soul of the individual, 2 Tim 2:17-18.

Gangrene rots the soul from the inside out. So the rot when it is inside, is caused by the infection of false beliefs that reside within ones soul.

But there is one more concept here, and that is one of searing.

Not only do people who lack truth in their soul, have the opposite of truth in their soul, namely lies or false doctrines, then retaining that bad information or view point, unchecked by truth, causes them to seal up that falsity within themselves, such that it is seared within them.

Seared, ‘kauteriazo,’ means to cauterize a wound, to seal it up so that nothing will escape, or get in. It is a medical term used for closing a cut or open wound with a hot iron. It not only keeps the inside stuff in, but it also keeps the outside stuff, out.

And in our case here, keeping the inside stuff in, means to keep the false doctrine inside the soul, and the truth out of the soul. That is the worst possible situation that anyone could get themselves into.

They have indoctrinated themselves so thoroughly with lies, that they cling to them, hold on to them, and in effect shut out all possible help from truth. They rot (symbolically speaking), from the inside of their soul.

Pharaoh is typically the example of this path to oblivion. He refused to hear Moses, ten times. In exodus, he is said to have hardened his heart through six of the plagues, that is the hardening or searing process of his soul, such that the scar tissue from the searing, sealed in his hate and defiance. Then it is God who hardened his heart for the final few plagues, which simply means that God kept him alive for the final plagues to emphasize that once a person crosses that maximum threshold of lies, then there is most likely no return. They cannot even rationalize within themselves that there is a threshold once they have crossed it.

The conscience, ‘suneidesis,’ is the area within your soul that differentiates between that which is right from that which is wrong.

The conscience is the faculty that affirms or condemns an action, Rom 2:14-15. It is the sensitivity to right and wrong that controls behavior, Acts 23:1; 24:16; Rom 9:1; 2 Cor 1:12; 2 Tim 1:3. False teachers reject a good conscience, 1 Tim. 1:19.

The false teachers' consciences have been so ignored and misinformed that they have become like scar tissue burned senseless, which cease to function. With scarred consciences, they feel no guilt or remorse as they promote their false doctrines or ideas.

1 Now [de] the Spirit [pneuma] speaketh [lego] expressly, [rhetos] that [hoti] in [en] the latter [husteros] times [kairos] some [tis] shall depart from [aphistemi] the faith, [pistis] giving heed [prosecho] to seducing [planos] spirits, [pneuma] and [kai] doctrines [didaskalia] of devils; [daimonion] KJV-Interlinear

1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, NASB

Humanity may be capable of technological ingenuity, however humanity is not capable of the invention of new philosophies.

There are only two sources of philosophy – God, who is the source of truth, and Satan who is the source of lies.

Everything handed down from generation to generation in human history as well as every belief that finds its way into human history, finds it origins in one of these two sources.

The Bible is the content of Gods truth. All other religions, philosophies, cults and such, have their origins in Satan.

And though people promote all of the bad things in history, it is not the people who we are engaged in battle with, it is the demon source that is ultimately behind all of the lies in the world.

Eph 6:12
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. NASB

Satan and those who were condemned along with him, are the ones who have saturated the world with the philosophies of evil. And those philosophies are many and confusing and deceiving.

To give heed, ‘prosecho,’ means to assent to, to devote oneself to, to cling to. It is more than merely listening, but a total adoption of a belief that is contrary to truth.

Apostates turn away from truth in all of its principles, and turn to the opposites of truth, embracing them totaly.

Religions are adopted in place of Christianity.
Traditional marriage is replaced with alternative arrangements.
Free enterprise, becomes government run bureaucracies.
Freedom and liberty and privacy become a matter of legislated oversight.
And the list of distorted truths goes on and on.

The philosophies of lies comes from their source, demons, who have long before you and I ever came onto the scene, planted their evil seeds into society, and then simply turned man loose with them. Mans sin nature does all of the rest.

Without truth in ones soul, then humanity has no basis for understanding truth, and therefore promotes lies, and out from lies come the problems of the world. All of them.

Jude 19
19 These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit.
NASB

Man wanders when truth is not there to guide. The word for deceitful, or seducing, ‘planos,’ came from the planets which seemed to wander across the sky. Therefore it came to mean wanderer because of being lost or out of touch.

Without truth, then humanity is caused to wander in darkness, by demons that promote false ideas.

Only with truth, often times called light, because it requires light in order to see anything, then man can have a reference point, a standard with which to know when he is on or off track in life. And that truth comes only from the Holy Spirit, the spirit of truth.

John 16:13
13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. NASB

And this communication of the Spirit comes naturally through your daily study of Bible doctrine. When you are in fellowship, then all truth is made clear and perspicuous, and all lies are revealed.

Therefore, all false teaching does not originate with teachers or professors or politicians or whomever, but in fact have their origins in the doctrines of devils, ‘daimonion.’

And this does not mean someone teaching about the subject of demons, but actual teaching that the demons themselves perform. All that Satan needs to do is find the weakest links in humanity and make his suggestions, just as he did with Eve in the Garden. Human weak links are those people who ignore truth, or are not interested in it, or reject it outright. They then are susceptible to alternative views, and are easily deceived.

And in that manner, false ideas can filter up through the human ranks and be modified, changed, altered and so forth into whatever the sin nature desires. That produces religions, cults, and all of the false ideas that exist.

Promoting false doctrines is punishable by death. Not in the legal sense, but in the spiritual sense. When anyone strays from truth, then they die to truth. There is a very good description and warning about apostasy in Deu. 13:12-18. Apostasy ruins and destroys. Nothing good ever comes out of it. And in fact, only bad to worse is the result of apostasy.

This is a sobering warning, if you read it correctly, and understand that apostasy in all of its forms, is a much worse killer than the worst cancer that you can imagine. If it is not cut out and removed from society, then society will die.

And that is exactly what human history is looking at, in the future years from our own dispensation as well as in the Tribulation.

The history of demon influence dates from the Garden, Gen. 3, to well into the Tribulation and even at the end of the millennium, when Satan is released from his thousand year prison sentence, Rev 9:2-11; 13:14; 16:14; 18:2,23; 19:20; 20:2,3,8,10.

However, through Gods mercy, true believers, those who pursue their objective study of truth, will not succumb, Ps 44:18; Heb 6:9; 10:39; Jude 24-25.

1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, NASB

Now the key to this verse is in the words ‘fall away.’

It is the view of most people that there will exist on the earth, at the time of the Rapture, lots of believers and lots of unbelievers. And, that it is because of the unbelievers that the Rapture occurs, which whisks the believers out of the way, so that God can deal with the unbelieving world.

That is only partially correct.

God does not take any action until and unless there is a need for action. And that need always has to do with the spiritual status of believers, not the beliefs of unbelievers per se.

In the Garden, Adam and Eve were living their merry little lives naming the animals and eating the fruit and so forth, until they violated the one and only rule of not eating from the forbidden tree. It was at that time, that they became spiritually dead (we call this state an unbelieving state). They hide from God (Christ) who had been walking with them every day prior to this sin.

But when He gave them the promise of a savior, then they believed and thus became the first believers in history.

This is verified by the fact that they were provided with clothing made of animal skins. Those skins came from animals that were sacrificed. The demonstration of their belief and the promise of a savior. Cain and Abel further defined the difference between the correct sacrifice and the incorrect sacrifice.

Anyway, history continued and did not come to an end because they believed. Christ was there, and they heard the gospel and they believed. The gospel was available and they responded positively.

In Noah’s day, Noah was there and the population rejected him. They were apostate, or they were in total rejection of the gospel as taught by Noah. The flood was the result. The gospel was there and it was rejected.

Now we move forward to the birth of Jesus. In the four centuries prior to His birth, the Old Testament was completed and there were no further revelations from God. The population was going generally toward works and forgetting the grace provisions of God. They even crucified Jesus in total rejection of Him as the Savior. Yet many were still believing in Him as demonstrated by the quick rise of Christianity.

But during those centuries preceding the birth of Jesus, the gospel was diminished, but not completely and replaced with works. Even the apostles had their confusion as to the accuracy of the mechanics of salvation.

This has continued as humanity has moved to the four corners of the planet, populated it, and believers now exist in all nations. Even with the rise and fall of spiritual awareness, Christianity has blossomed and people have been saved, and people have advanced to spiritual maturity.

However, we now are studying a change in the attitudes of society and more particularly the change if attitudes of Christians.

And that is where apostasy enters into the picture of history. And more particularly the ‘great’ apostasy that will occur at the end of our dispensation.

The word for the phrase ‘depart from,’ ‘aphistemi,’ means to leave a place that was once occupied, to depart from, to remove oneself from a position originally occupied, to abandon, to go to another place.

And the place that is being abandoned is ‘faith,’ ‘pistis,’ or the fundamental beliefs that make up Christianity.

So the apostasy, the great apostasy which will occur at the end of our dispensation, is going to be caused by Christians falling away from their basic beliefs. And not only falling away, but adopting other beliefs in a proactive way.

Apostasy is not merely an indifference but a total abandonment of one belief, and the pursuit of something else.

And what are the implications? Well, with fewer practicing Christians, then the evangelization of the world slows down or comes to a halt altogether. This does not mean fewer believers, because there will be millions who will be raptured away. This only means that of those believers, most will have adopted non-Christian values.

And this too, does not mean that the Christians will become Buddhists, or Muslims, or members of some other group. It only means that their practices will not be proper or correct Christian practices or beliefs. Certainly many will pursue salvation by works, or they will pursue works, and calling them their Christian calling.

But when we view recent trends in the world, it would seem more likely that people will become more secular, or worldly, or material oriented, or socialistic. And because the anti-christ will pursue extreme liberal socialism policies (we will get this from our study in Revelation), then it also indicates that the general population will promote and support these views, rather than the fundamental establishment principles of Christianity.

We can already see the acceptance of alternative lifestyles and anti-Christian views everywhere around us. These things will only get worse as time moves along.

This word is also used in Lk. 8:13, when Christian behavior is described as seed falling on rocky ground, and then with no growth, act like or adopt the same pattern of life as that of Judas, choosing evil over truth.

Apostasy is not a matter of struggling within ones faith, but a willful abandonment of truth and turning to lies.

This is the state of the world when the end of our dispensation finally arrives, a virtual disappearance of the gospel and evangelism.

When will that be? How long with it take to get to that place in society? None of us can answer those questions.

We only know that faith rises and falls with each succeeding generation. And in the case of our own future, then it would seem that faith will falter either a little or a lot with each succeeding generation, until the time arrives that most people will have no concern for, and nothing to do with, Christ.

We do have a lot so other indicators of the end times, namely the rise in frequency of knowledge, of storms and such, but there is one rapid rise that might be more significant, and that is the rapid rise in population.

At the time of the end of our dispensation, the population on the planet will be huge and growing rapidly. And if you think about it, then with a larger and larger population, come more and more social problems from the need for jobs, to food, to crime, to personal meaning in peoples lives (hope, despair, etc.). And all of these can significantly contribute to the spiritual falling away of people, from Christ.

The population is currently doubling about every thirty to forty years. If our current population of seven-billion doubles at that rate, then within this century there will be over fifty billion people on the planet, with no end in sight for even more. Simple common sense dictates that at some point the system for humanity will breakdown, one would think.

Anyway there is one more topic from this verse and that is the source of apostasy, which we will study tomorrow, and then we will resume our study in Rev. 2.

Paul uses a broad definition when referring to the ‘latter’ times. The word for latter, ‘husteros,’ is a reference to that which follows the former or the primary.

It stands apart for the ‘Day of the Lord’ or as some other phrases refer to the ‘end’ times. The reference to the ‘latter’ times is a reference to the Church Age as a dispensation in its entirety, in that it is the final full dispensation which will see human rule in history.

The Age of Israel was the dispensation which immediately preceded ours, and of which we interrupted, leaving them with just seven years remaining within their dispensation. That remaining seven years will conclude immediately after our dispensation ends with the Rapture.

Paul refers in this verse to a growing apostasy, which is a general concept. In 2 Thess. He referes to a ‘great’ apostasy, which is more specific, and of which this apostasy will culminate in at the end of our dispensation, as the greatest apostasy era in all of history.

However, Paul refers to the ‘latter’ times, which is elsewhere defined for us in the New Testament.

The first advent of Christ ushered in the period known as the latter times. John reinforces that notion by his reference to the ‘last hour’ in 1 Jn. 2:18.

Christ appeared in these ‘last times’ for our sake, 1 Pet. 1:20.

Hebrews refers to these last times, in stating that God has spoken to us in His Son, Heb. 1:2.

Hebrews also refers to this era as the consummation of the ages, when Christ was crucified once during this last era, Heb. 9:26.

And in Matthew, Pauls statement of 2 Thess, that the love ‘agape’ of most people will grow cold (wax cold), will occur and escalate at the end of our era, Matt. 24:12, before the anti-christ is revealed.

Throughout all of the Church Age, apostasy will rise and fall through the generations, and that is obvious from viewing the last 1900 years of history, however, as the end of our age approaches, apostasy will rise to its highest.

Now just a quick thought here. When the Rapture occurs, society will already be in its peak of apostasy. Immediately after the Rapture, when all believers have been removed from the earth, what do you suppose the spiritual state of the world will be then?

Obviously there will be only unbelievers on the earth, who by default are negative to God, Christ, and doctrine, but more specifically against Christ, therefore the actual state of the world will be at its most extreme anti-christ state, ever.

Who then will come into power after the Rapture? And who will cheer him into power?

1 Now [de] the Spirit [pneuma] speaketh [lego] expressly, [rhetos] that [hoti] in [en] the latter [husteros] times [kairos] some [tis] shall depart from [aphistemi] the faith, [pistis] giving heed [prosecho] to seducing [planos] spirits, [pneuma] and [kai] doctrines [didaskalia] of devils; [daimonion] KJV-Interlinear

4 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, NASB

The Spirit, is a reference to the Holy Spirit, through whom we receive all of our spiritual information. We cannot see, hear, feel, or detect the Holy Spirit in any way. But in all matters of truth, the Holy Spirit is the one who performs all communications of doctrine to you as a believer, Jn. 14:26, 15:26.

The explicit statements of the Spirit, is a reference to the words written in the scriptures. Everything that is written in the Bible came to humanity through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God, therefore all doctrine came from God.

Here Paul restates that there will be an apostasy in the latter times, or end times.

Whether you agree with that statement of not, is irrelevant. God has made it quite clear that as time marches on toward the end of human history, there will occur a falling away of believers, and people in general, from truth.

It is or will be, one of the many signs of the approaching end days. Unfortunately people who are indifferent toward doctrine, will not recognize their fulfillment of this prediction, just as it is written, simply because they will not be reading the Bible.

The Bible warns us (we could easily say that the Spirit warns us) of the consequences and examples of apostasy, Deu. 28:15, Eze 20:38, Ex 32; 1 Sam 15:11, Neh 9:26, Psa 78:1.

Saying that the Bible says, or the Spirit says, is essentially the same expression.

The New Testament warns of deceptive teachers, and of apostasy, Matt 24:4-12, 2 Thess 2:3-12, 2 Peter 3:3; Jude 18. The 2 Thess., reference is more particularly the reference to the ‘great’ apostasy which will occur at the end of our dispensation. It will be the most dramatic spiritual decline in all of human history.

John warned that we are in the last hour of the end days, 1 John 2:18, 4:1-6, which is symbolic for ‘very near’ the end relative to all of the rest of history, and is not a reference to the clock or to years, or to generations, etc.

Just a quick note, apostasy is present and has been present throughout human history. Just because we see it now, in its many forms, does not mean that this is the first time it has ever occurred.

There has been and there will always be, those who will hear the gospel, who will respond to the gospel, but will not stick with a daily study of the scriptures, as we are commanded to do, in order to grow up spiritually.

It is just that as history approaches the actual end of our time, the apostasy of society will be the most dramatic that it has ever been in all of history. The time of Noah has been set as the benchmark to be used for comparison, and back then only eight people walked into the Ark, out of possibly millions. Others could have walked into the Ark, but they chose against it.

The Rapture will be the reverse as far as people leaving and people staying behind, and the numbers will not be the same either as vast numbers will be Raptured away, just as vast numbers will remain.

But what is important during that last timeframe in history, is the general attitude toward God, Christ and doctrine. It will be virtually non-existent, whereas the number of new people believing in Christ will come to a virtual halt. Thus the historical gap (the third of three), and time for the next increment of history, namely the Rapture and the Tribulation.

The other two spiritual gaps occurred during the time of Noah just before the flood, and the four century period prior to the birth of Christ.

When spiritual disregard for truth ceases, then there has to be something to cause people to come around to their senses, lest the rest of the population would die off without salvation, leaving future generations (the Millennium) of possible believers without even their chance at life.

1 Timothy 4:1a

In chapter one, Paul dealt with the many false teachers that would come along to distort true teaching, and cause people to fall away, or to be deceived away from doctrine.

Without exception, all false teaching is self centered and desires only to serve the ego of the false teacher, at the expense of the student or hearer of their message.

False teaching is the epitome of evil.

And although we might think of false teaching as coming only from organized sources, in fact most false teaching comes from individuals who may mean well, but tend to promote their one word or one phrase, or their concept view of the world and of God, in such a way that it results in distracting people away from their first obligation, which is to study and learn and grow up in a systematic learning environment, and not be distracted away by gimmick or emotion driven agendas.

Paul countered the false teachers by laying out the very basics of Christian behavior and expectations, even as to the respective roles of the man and woman in Christ, in their simplest form, as well as the expectations of the fundamental Christian requirements for leadership and service, which applies to us all in one form or another.

And though we have seen in the last two chapters that these requirements are extremely simple, and that even the most inept person can understand them, there will always exist those who will unfortunately number as the vast majority of those who will reject these basic principles.

Principles and guidelines that are not intended to cause anyone to become less than anyone else, or greater than anyone else, but to aid in bringing everyone to spiritual maturity and the winner circle of champions for all of eternity, and the most phenomenal life beyond imagination.

Gods objective for your life is not your humiliation, but your completion to the maximum. God simply gives us all the framework of this life, within which we can grow to our fullest potential. In the next life, all of this framework (no male, no female, no jew, no gentile, stereotypes, etc. etc.), goes away.

And so Paul continues in this chapter to describe that apostasy will abound, even in the end times, which we in our dispensation, identify ourselves.

From the date of the beginning of our dispensation, at the Feast of Pentecost, which occurred fifty days following the Crucifixion, at the Feast of Passover, until now, our dispensation, which we call the Church Age, has been functioning as the end times.

During our dispensation we have seen knowledge increase, first in the completion of the Bible in the few decades following the Cross and completed in 96 A.D., when John wrote Revelation. And then throughout the centuries following to our present day, as human knowledge has increased with increasing speed in recent decades, then so too, doctrine has not changed, nor the fundamental principles of Christian obligation or behavior.

And yet with all of the increases in perspective knowledge that surrounds us all, apostasy still outweighs truth in the minds of most people.

And this apostasy is not in the form of people struggling with the understanding of Christian principles, but in the form of people struggling with which opposing view to pursue, rather than truth.

Apostasy, in these end days (a narrower time frame, not end times which is a broader time frame), but in these end days, when our dispensation is nearing its end, Paul has already written and we have already studied, the ‘great’ apostasy, which will consume society across the planet.

Apostasy is a rejection of truth and a replacement of it with something false, or a substituted false view of life in all of its aspects.

And rejection of all of the aspects of truth, begins with the rejection of the very basics of truth, starting with the roles of men and women, as well as the basic roles of Christians in general, in life.

And apostasy in tantamount to the worship of idols. Idols are anything that is false and upon which you establish your beliefs. All things false are from Satan. All false things are backed by demons. Behind all false things are demons, promoted by Satan who is the master of disguise, 2 Cor. 11:14.

Anyone who pursues false beliefs is in effect worshipping the demons behind those false beliefs, Lev. 17:7, Deu. 32:17, Psa. 106:36-37, 1 Cor. 10:20.

Paul draws the battle lines in chapter four, between false doctrines, all of which come from no source other than Satan, and Bible doctrine, which God has magnified above His very own essence, Psa. 138:2.

And once again, I am going to make this study a part of the Revelation study as well, because we are entering into the area of apostate views, which will have a huge impact on life now, and in the future to come, and of which it is extremely important that you understand, so that you will not become a part of it.

Because in any apostate pursuit in life, there it is accompanied by severe and tremendous judgment and loss of blessing. Both of which you do not want to be a part.

16 And [kai] without controversy [homologoumenos] great [megas] is [esti] the mystery [musterion] of godliness: [eusebeia] God [theos] was manifest [phaneroo] in [en] the flesh, [sarx] justified [dikaioo] in [en] the Spirit, [pneuma] seen [optanomai] of angels, [aggelos] preached [kerusso] unto [en] the Gentiles, [ethnos] believed on [pisteuo] in [en] the world, [kosmos] received up [analambano] into [en] glory. [doxa] KJV-Interlinear

16 And by common confession great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Beheld by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory. NASB

The heart of the Christian message in this world is to live a life that is founded upon sound truth. That truth is Bible doctrine learned by means of a daily study.

To live a life based on ego or emotion or self purpose is about as far as you can get from true Christianity.

The heart of the Christian message is Jesus Christ, who is the primary and only example of perfection and wisdom, and sound life.

Out of the tales of horror and suffering which we are seeing in Haiti, will certainly come tales of heroism and courage, based on the acts of selfless individuals who will remain largely unrecognized and unidentified, but will be the true heroes in what is probably going to go on record as one of the most horrific disasters in world history.

It is in tests like this, that the heroes and the gangs, the good and the bad, will manifest themselves, and show to all, their true foundation of courage or their true evil. And the world will be witness in one form or another.

And as we watch from afar, the activities in Haiti, we know one truth.

That the Word of God is a vast and inexhaustible reservoir of truth. So vast, that even in its written form, not one person of us, in our long lifetime, could ever comprehend it all. And there exists in heaven truth even more vast than what we have here on this earth. And at the very center of it all, is Jesus Christ.

And in true Christianity, there is but one truth, which is without controversy, that Jesus is the Christ, the Lord, the Savior, the Son of the living God, and is God.

That He is the ultimate mystery, which is revealed only to those who believe, or desire to believe, in Him, thus developing yet another mystery of godliness, which we call spiritual maturity through growth derived from ones daily study of doctrine.

That He as God, who preexisted all things from eternity past, became perfect humanity, in the flesh, becoming the unique person of the universe, both God and man in one person. The mystery is, ‘How was that possible?’

Who lived the perfect human life, while in the flesh, justified (supported) by the Holy Spirit, and who lived by means of the Holy Spirit, just as you and I do, when we confess our sins and enter into fellowship, and are thus placing ourselves under the control of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

However, Jesus being perfect, and supported by means of the Spirit, never sinned and never faltered as the rest of us do. And He lived a perfect life, without sin, and was therefore qualified to take our place on the Cross, and pay the ultimate price to purchase our salvation, or deliverance from eternal damnation.

Christ was seen and observed and attended by angels, Matt 28:2, Luke 24:4-7, Acts 1:10-11. He was feared by demons (fallen angels).

Christ has been and still is, preached in all of the nations around the planet. No other person or belief in history has had so much exposure to everyone who has ever lived, than that of Jesus Christ. And no one and no belief has had as many followers and believers, as Christ has, throughout all of human history.

And in triumph, He ascended in front of witnesses, into heaven, and there awaits the alignment of the nations and peoples, for His last and final victory over evil.

And this is the message of Christianity – Jesus Christ. And wrapped up in that name alone, is all of the above truth, and far, far more.

Jesus Christ is manifested in you, when you learn doctrine, and grow up in your spiritual life, as you are expected to grow.

1 Timothy 3:14-15

14 These things [tauta] write I [grapho] unto thee, [soi] hoping [elpizo] to come [erchomai] unto [pros] thee [se] shortly: [tachion]
15 But [de] if [ean] I tarry long, [braduno] that [hina] thou mayest know [eido] how [pos] thou oughtest [dei] to behave thyself [anastrepho] in [en] the house [oikos] of God, [theos] which [hostis] is [esti] the church [ekklesia] of the living [zao] God, [theos] the pillar [stulos] and [kai] ground [hedraioma] of the truth. [aletheia] KJV-Interlinear

14 I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long;
15 but in case I am delayed, I write so that you may know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. NASB

Decades ago, a professional football coach, Vince Lombardi, would begin the practice season with one remark, "Gentlemen, this is a football!"

He was speaking to men who had played the game for most of their lives. They were all professional football players drawing huge salaries for what they did. And yet the coach began each season with the fundamentals of running, blocking, tackling and so forth. And they became champions.

This is exactly what Paul is doing here. Ladies and Gentlemen these are the fundamentals of Christianity.

Your daily conduct begins with your daily Bible study, and from there you learn and you grow and you understand, and you do it all over again, and again, with a lifetime of repetition, so that you can know and do it all in your sleep. Then and only then do you become the professional equivalent as a Christian, performing as a Christian should perform. And that performance makes you the champion that you should be, and not the inept know-it-all beginner that most people act like.

Life sponsors such a huge variety of ministries, that it is easy to get lost in all of the peripheral things that go on in life.

From the many church denominations, to the many church policies, to the many views regarding social activities, or spiritual gifts, or holy ghost this or that, or speaking in tongues, or faith healing beliefs, or to the pursuit of Christian gimmicks, promise clubs and such, it is easy to get lost in the noise that Christianity has become today.

And isn’t it a wonder that so many people will simply become disinterested in Christianity, because of the many contradictory or mindless teachings that it offers! Who would blame them?

But it is also a work of evil that causes such confusion, and such evil is promoted by those who are dedicated to their false beliefs, because they have lost or forgotten or never knew the fundamentals of Christianity.

But Paul has laid them out right here in these first three chapters of this letter to Timothy, which we have just completed in our study, and closes with the heart of the Christian mission in verse 15, and the heart of the Christian message in verse 16.

That you should know. If you study and learn, then you will know. If you do not study and therefore do not learn, then you will not know. If you get caught up in any of the mindless pursuits that are out there, then you will never know what your meaning and purpose and function are, in this life.

Your spiritual conduct begins not with endless debates over the many views of life, which is a total distraction, getting you away from your first priority.

You spiritual priority is to study the scriptures, every day. You are to learn under the supervision of an instructor. You are to learn through your daily studies. Apply those learned principles to your daily life, study some more, learn some more, make your mistakes, learn from your mistakes, come to an understanding, grow up and do it all over again and again for all of your natural life here in this world.

Your goal is spiritual maturity, which qualifies you for rewards and blessings beyond your imagination.

In sporting events, those who repeat mistakes, those who do not learn their fundamentals, do not win. And losers never receive the prize, never.

Again, we will not have a study in Revelation on this day, because this study will be applied to both study groups.

If you were really a student of the Word, if you really wanted to learn, if you had some genuine semblance of yearning and desire within yourself, to grow up and be a spiritual winner, then no one would ever have to tell you to do your homework.

There would never be the need for real life disaster events to remind you that this life is not a walk in the park, but a real and serious business that concerns your life now, and especially your life in eternity.

In Revelation we are studying those who disregarded their spiritual obligations, and therefore stood to lose phenomenal extra rewards and blessings in their eternal life in heaven.

Perhaps people need to begin using their imaginations to exercise their minds as to the many infinite possibilities that could exist for them in heaven. Perhaps you should go see some of these recent animated 3D movies, just to give your imagination a boost.

And then, consider what your risk of losing blessings really amounts to, and what little investment is required of you, in order to succeed in Gods plan for you.

1 Timothy 3:13

1 Timothy 3:13

DailyBibleStudy.Org

13 For [gar] they that have used the office of a deacon [diakoneo] well [kalos] purchase [peripoieomai] to themselves [heautou] a good [kalos] degree, [bathmos] and [kai] great [polus] boldness [parrhesia] in [en] the faith [pistis] which [ho] is in [en] Christ [Christos] Jesus. [Iesous] KJV-Interlinear

13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. NASB

For those believers, whether male or female, who fulfill their role of Christian service, in the proper manner, then there are two rewards. These rewards are automatic, they are acquired, they are purchased in a manner of speaking, through the action of obedience of the believer to the common sense day to day lifestyle, that is authorized and recognized by God, and of which we have just completed our study.

Since true rewards come only from God, then ones evaluation likewise comes from God, and His evaluation is honest, honorable, and appropriate. What people think of you, whether good or bad, is irrelevant.

The two rewards are first, a high standing in ones spiritual life, and second, a great confidence in faith.

The high standing, or good degree, ‘bathmos,’ refers to an elevated stand, being placed on a pedestal so to speak, being elevated to a position recognized as higher than all others, a promotion as it were. It is basically a recognition for those who have been faithful and honorable in their spiritual life, with respect to the application of Christian principles to their daily life. God makes note of those who live their lives in accordance with His principles, and not in pretense, not in exaggeration, and certainly not in accordance with ones own defined standards.

The second reward, is great confidence, ‘parrhesia,’ which also means command or poise, or inner confidence within ones soul. Courage is the result of confidence. Courage in the face of all possible attacks against ones self, from any situation. This results in the stability of life, when pressure enters into your life.

Biblical principles, are those that are taught from the scriptures, not from ones own imagination or personal convenience.

Too many will try to advance themselves through works alone, however, the emphasis of these characteristics, is on doctrine first, spiritual growth first, and then from that foundation of knowledge turned to wisdom, comes confidence and courage. This is an indicator of maturity.

This is the devils world, and pressures will abound from all sides, sooner or later in your life. Often times we live in a state of ho-hum activity, and getting a clear picture of Gods purpose for our life is not clear. This makes it very easy to go out on our own to invent our works, and seek the approval of our peers.

But then comes along some event in our life. The event may be directed personally at us or it may be far, far away. And from that we may be brought back to reality, once we realize that life is a very serious matter, and not something to be played with, with frivolous ego attitudes.

So if you have seen any news at all, then you are aware of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Every few years a disaster of that magnitude occurs somewhere in the world. And among the many obvious affects it will have on people in general, is the affect that it will have on you personally.

We are not having a revelation study today, because I wanted to have this study available for everyone on this day.

The real question in life is this.

God has laid out in this chapter some of the easiest expectations, and easiest ways to advance oneself in the spiritual life. Namely, to study doctrine daily (not a big demand on anyone's life), to live an honest and responsible daily life (not asking too much of anyone), to avoid putting yourself first in life, and placing your spouse and children and basically everyone else in your life ahead of yourself (just a matter of humility and courtesy, and unselfishness). And the result of advancement to spiritual maturity, will come to you almost automatically.

With little or no effort, you advance in Gods plan, and qualify for rewards that go beyond your imagination.

In Revelation, we reviewed several of the rewards that are available to obedient and mature believers. Rewards that are phenomenal.

But, how many will resist in their effort to do even the basic of things expected from the Christian life? Very few.

And so we have real world events, like the disaster that is unfolding in Haiti.

Most folks, you would think, would see the seriousness of life, without the example of a real disaster. But unfortunately, far too many have to have a huge hit in their life, before they get it.

That earthquake could have occurred anywhere in the world. There is not one single person in this world, who is beyond the reach of a major disaster. Would you be ready, physically, mentally and especially spiritually, if it were to occur in your life?

You can be sure that there are many in Haiti who are and will be tested to limits beyond their imagination over the coming months.

God has a plan for your life. You should pursue that plan to the fullest, and in accordance with His plan, not yours.

That means your daily life begins with a daily study of the Word of God, so that you will learn doctrine and use it and grow up, such that God will use you, because you are usable in His plan, and not become a statistic in history.
