Isaiah 30:16

Isaiah 30:16

16 But ye said ['amar], No; for we will flee [nuwc] upon horses [cuwc]; therefore shall ye flee [nuwc]: and, We will ride [rakab] upon the swift [qal]; therefore shall they that pursue [radaph] you be swift [qalal].   KJV-Interlinear

16 and you said, “No! We will flee upon horses”; therefore you shall flee away; and, “We will ride upon swift steeds”; therefore your pursuers shall be swift.   ESV

Too many people today do exactly the same thing that the Israelites did back in Isaiah’s day, namely they ignore the counsel of God. They not only ignore the counsel of God, but they presume that whatever it is they think and say and do now, is the counsel of God, when it is not. Refusal to be taught, refusal to listen and learn, are the main ingredients for a disastrous spiritual life.

In the previous verse Isaiah states exactly how people can escape disaster. And that is very simple. People simply need to listen and learn from instruction, the teaching of the Bible. But not only that, they need to be in fellowship, which requires compliance with Gods spiritual process, namely confession of sin to God the Father, on a regular basis.

But, the people in Isaiah’s day said, no.

They refused to hear the teaching, they refused to look to God. They instead turned to Egypt for their safety and security. And not only that, they had a common thought and purpose, which is simply stated here. We will flee upon horses, we will ride upon swift steeds. And the idea there is that carries an air of confidence and presumption that whatever comes, their alliance with Egypt will provide them the swift means of maneuvering, or of escape.

And Isaiah turns their own words back on them stating, therefore you will flee. And the meaning of flee here is to run in terror.

In the second statement, your pursuers shall be swift, means simply that the invaders will be faster, and their escape will be disastrous.

Anyone who ignores, or is indifferent toward, or rejects the study of the word of God in their life, will discover that their own attitude, their own beliefs, will become the description of their own demise.

And so it was with the Israelites, when Assyria invaded, Egypt did nothing.

A life without doctrine, is a life in sin, in evil, in reliance on the world.

A reliance on the world is no reliance at all.

And when you depend on something that is nothing, then you get nothing.
