Ephesians 4:3

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Ephesians 4:3

3 Endeavouring [spoudazo] to keep [tereo] the unity [henotes] of the Spirit [pneuma] in [en] the bond [sundesmos] of peace. [eirene] KJV-Interlinear

3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.  NASB

Endeavoring, ‘spoudazo,’ means to make an effort, to try really hard, to pursue with earnest, to be diligent, objective in your work or labor.

Unity, ‘henotes,’ means oneness, same, unity, consistency, unchanged.

Spirit, ‘pneuma,’ means a current of air, breathing, inhale or exhale, mental disposition, life entity.

Bond, ‘sundesmos,’ a joint tie as in a ligament, uniting principle.

Peace, ‘eirene,’ peace, quietness, rest, comfort, contentment.

The following verses will emphasize and define the meaning and focus of this verse.

But for now, this verse speaks to the continuity and uniformity of Bible doctrine as provided by God, exhale, and learned and understood by man, inhale.

All doctrine is God breathed. All doctrine comes into the soul by way of the human spirit under the power and direction of the Holy Spirit.

The same information is taught, the same information is learned by all when people study the scriptures under the mandated pattern and method authorized by God.

When God teaches two plus two, then everyone learns two plus two.

Unfortunately this world is full of religions, and numerous protestant groups, that all have their own ideas, rituals, and beliefs, that contain many truths, but have numerous falsities or invented ideas woven into their belief systems.

This mandate from God is demanding that believers pay earnest attention to truth, and pursue truth as directed by the scriptures. Instead there are so many versions and ideas out there, that the truth seems to get lost in the shuffle.

Satan is the master of invented lies that simulate truth, but are there to cause confusion and ambiguity and uncertainty, and therefore doubt and unbelief.  His goal is the discrediting of truth, such that people will disregard God and Christianity, and then pursue something else that seems more fitting or convenient to their lives.

Therefore, there is only one means of keeping doctrine clear and perspicuous, and that is through the one and only authorized method of learning doctrine. Namely through a legitimate daily study of the Word of God.

Apart from that, people will go their own separate ways and that is how the many different groups are formed, each selecting those things that they prefer, rather than the sum total of Gods truth.

Therefore, you are to make an effort in learning, in being objective, in listening and in sorting out what is true and what is not.

You do this by means of the thing you do without any conscious effort.  You breathe in and you breathe out. You study and learn and you apply to your life.  You listen and you keep on listening, and you keep on listening and you learn and you keep on learning.

You tie the principles of doctrine together tight, and you maintain them on a daily basis, with no preconceived ideas, with no pretense, with no bias, but with objectivity, and no arrogance or presumption.

The principles of the previous verses apply.

God makes the rules, you do not.  God provides the clarity of thought, you do not.  God reveals and interprets, you do not.

Each person is a student without portfolio.  You have nothing to say, no opinion to state.  You have but only to listen and learn.  We all do, for we are all students.

The repetition of and repeated exposure of doctrine day after day, will bring understanding and wisdom.

The reward of all of this, in part, is peace, a relaxed mental attitude, a quietness of soul and confidence in that which God has to teach, and you have but to learn.

Ephesians 4:2

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Ephesians 4:2

2 With [meta] all [pas] lowliness [tapeinophrosune] and [kai] meekness, [praotes] with [meta] longsuffering, [makrothumia] forbearing [anechomai] one another [allelon] in [en] love; [agape]KJV-Interlinear

2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, NASB

Humility, ‘tapeinophrosune,’ means humbleness of mind, the lack of arrogance or presumption or bias, no pretense, no uppityness, no ‘holier than thou’s’.  This has nothing to do with posture or behavior.  The strongest warrior can be humble in mind, confident in truth and purpose so long as they are tied to Gods will, His legitimate will.

Meekness, ‘praotes,’ means gentleness, empathy, tolerant, not brash, not uncaring.

Longsuffering, ‘makrothumia,’ means patience, tolerance, fortitude.

Forbearing, ‘anechomai,’ means to endure, to suffer, to hold ones-self up in the face of difficulty without loss of faith or confidence.

Love, ‘agape,’ is the reference to the content of the scriptures, the principles, mandates, responsibilities and obligations that accompany and pertain to, the spiritual life.

Jesus Christ is the common thread that ties all of Christianity together.  Bible doctrine is the common thread by which Christianity is lived and supported and sustained.

Attitude, legitimate and honorable attitude and behavior of the believer and all believers, is dependent on their adherence to the principles taught and thus learned by each respective believer.  These set the stage and pattern of the spiritual life in humility, gentleness, patience, endurance, principle, and more.

Outward appearances, outward rhetoric, outward patterns of life are irrelevant and are often phony.

The true believer’s inner self, is constructed and driven by Bible doctrine.

Isaiah 5:18

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:18

18 Woe [howy] unto them that draw [mashak] iniquity [`avon] with cords [chebel] of vanity, [shav'] and sin [chatta'ah] as it were with a cart [`agalah] rope: [`aboth]KJV-Interlinear

18 Woe to those who drag iniquity with the cords of falsehood, And sin as if with cart ropes; NASB

The smallest of sins is a burden, even if very slight and seemingly innocent, causing no harm to anyone.

However, that is not the case in reality. One little sin leads to another, leads to another, leads to another.

And so this verse teaches us, that when a person lives in sin, even if in the slightest sense, that life begins to weave greater and greater sins.  And without realizing it, those sins become so great that the effort to commit sins becomes greater, such that the person goes to great lengths in order to commit the sins.

And therefore, to draw iniquity with cords of vanity, the word for cords, ‘chebel,’ means a fine hair as in a spiders web. But one hair leads to two hairs, leads to three hairs and so forth until the web becomes massive.

The cart rope, is a very heavy rope that requires effort, great effort in order to pull the cart.  It is not the beast of burden or ox that is pulling the cart, but the person who is committing the sins.

So, without effort the little thin hairs of sin are committed, then they increase in number, and increase in mass.

The individual does not think about the little thin hairs.  A single spider web line is thin and easily brushed aside with little notice.

But then the sins continue and begin to take over the life of the person, and the sins become not simply easy and unnoticed, but they are pursued with greater and greater effort.  It takes then, work, much work to remain in the sins, and that is the pattern of life that a person can fall into.

When you are wrapped up in a massive spider web, burdened with a heavy rope with which you are pulling yourself through life, then you are indeed trapped.

And thus the ‘woe’ warning is issued by God.

Disregard truth, disregard your responsibility and obligations in truth, and you will, and this is not just a possibility, but a certainty, you will fall into the trap and bindings and burdens of the very life that you have placed yourself into by means of your own choices.

Little sins set the direction.  Greater sins set the pattern.  And finally they all combine to envelope you and trap you in indifference, in belligerence, in disrespect, in rejection of the obligations that God has placed on you with respect to yourself, with respect to the people in your life, in being opinionated, critical, judgmental, brash, in rejection of authority or your role in life, and on and on as the many principles of doctrine tumble in their importance right out of your life.

In the next few verses, even more woes are coming, more warnings are coming.  But will you listen or will you continue your nose dive into your eventual personal disaster.

Isaiah 5:17

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:17

17 Then shall the lambs [kebes] feed [ra`ah] after their manner, [dober] and the waste places [chorbah] of the fat ones [meach] shall strangers [guwr] eat. ['akal] KJV-Interlinear

17 Then the lambs will graze as in their pasture, And strangers will eat in the waste places of the wealthy. NASB

The devastation by the Lord will be so great and so complete, that the homes, the cities, the regions that were once occupied by people, especially the elite of society, will be utterly empty of life.

What will remain, will be the animals, domestic and otherwise. They will roam free, having no fences, no barriers to keep them in place, nothing to prevent them from roaming at their leisure.

And since the local population will be destroyed, then those who will come in to occupy what was once there, will be strangers, foreigners, or folks that did not originally live there, but will move in from another place.

These events will occur to a lesser extent during the Babylonian invasion and captivity.  But the real event of Gods destruction and the total wipeout of the population, will not occur until the end days, during the Tribulation.

It is then that the worlds evil population will be destroyed, but animals will miraculously survive.

Lambs, is a term that is generally used throughout the scriptures to designate Gods people.

And so, after the last and final destruction, it will not be evil people who will survive, but Gods people, believers that have in one way or another, been in hiding and then will come out of hiding, having been rescued, to then occupy the lands that will have been destroyed, but had been occupied by the worlds evil population.

For anyone who is facing difficulties, and have similarly been obedient to the mandates of Gods word, having grown up in their spiritual life, then this verse is yet another of many promises of rescue and deliverance in times of trouble.

Remain faithful to your daily studies and utilize those studies in your daily life, thus enhancing your spiritual growth, and there will always be a certainty of rescue by God from disaster.

However, if you ignore these words, and are indifferent toward God and doctrine, then what do you suppose will be waiting for you?

Psalm 18:20

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Psalm 18:20

20 The LORD [Yahovah] rewarded [gamal] me according to my righteousness; [tsedeq] according to the cleanness [bor] of my hands [yad] hath he recompensed [shuwb] me. KJV-Interlinear

20 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me. NASB

Rewarded, ‘gamal,’ means to treat a person well, to benefit, to ripen, reward, recompense, to pay.

Recompensed, ‘shuwb,’ means to turn back, away, fetch home, recover, refresh, render, compensate.

There are two issues in the spiritual life.  The first being the spiritual maturity or status of the individual.  And second, the spiritual pattern or daily life pursued by the individual.

The first deals with your spiritual knowledge and wisdom, that has accumulated within your soul, and thus becomes the framework of your spiritual life.

The second, is the application of that spiritual information to your daily life and how you live from day to day.

The two combined, your spiritual growth or maturity, and your spiritual production, make up the basis for that which God rewards you.

There is only one righteousness, and that is Gods righteousness.  Man has no righteousness except for that which is conveyed to him by way of Gods truth, or doctrine.

Mans righteousness is as filthy rags, and Isaiah had a little better descriptive phrase for that, but filthy rags will suffice for now.  Man has no righteousness in and of himself.

Only Gods righteousness, which is the sinless perfection of Gods essence, can be obtained by man through doctrine and the spiritual life.  Man has no other means of obtaining any sort of righteousness, except through the daily study of bible doctrine.

Cleanness of my hands, is a descriptive phrase that identifies ones daily activities.  The work of the hands is a representative symbol that describes the persons activity in life.

Since you are what you think, then you do in accordance with the standards that you have adopted for your life.

Bible doctrine is the ultimate standard for truth, honesty, integrity, hard work, fair and unbiased treatment of others, and living the good and decent life.  These things are never driven by sincerity or good intentions or emotions or other standards that exclude Gods word as defined by Gods word.

The cleanness, is a reference to the fellowship environment in which you live your spiritual life.

After one has been saved, sin will enter into your life sooner or later and most probably on a daily basis in one way or another.  When one sins, then you are out of fellowship, and your spiritual life does not function.

When you confess your sins to God the Father, then you are restored into fellowship, and thus your spiritual life functions properly.  Whatever you do, while in fellowship, especially your daily studies, prayers and such, but also your general daily activity, become a part of your spiritual production.

Anything done while out of fellowship is not a part of your spiritual production.

Therefore, God blesses and rewards you in accordance with your level of spiritual growth (advancement toward maturity), and the level of your spiritual production.
