Romans 5:11
11 And [de] not [ou] only [monon] so, but [alla] we also [kai] joy [kauchaomai] in [en] God [theos] through [dia] our [hemon] Lord [kurios] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos], by [dia] whom [hos] we have [lambano] now [nun] received [lambano] the atonement [katallage]. KJV-Interlinear
11 More than that, we also
rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received
reconciliation. ESV
Atonement or reconciliation has to occur between God
and man before we can have any kind of compatible or functional relationship
with God.
God is the sovereign ruler over all that exists. God
owns all that exists. In order to live with God we have to have a relationship
with God. And without a relationship with God then we have no place to live and
nothing to hold our life together.
God is the authority and power that holds everything
together. God is the glue, as it were, by which the universe and life are both
held together.
Without God nothing would exist.
Without God we could not exist.
There are three persons in the Godhead.
The first is God the Father, who is seen as the
highest authority. The Father is the person to whom all religions direct their
attention. And in all religions and philosophies, there is a primary assumption
that man is, or capable of being, equal with God.
The second person is Jesus Christ, who holds the title
Son, among other titles. One of the many roles of the Son is to defeat
arrogance by becoming the sole access path to the Father. As a result, the Son
becomes a stumbling block for all religions and philosophies as they, in
arrogance, reject Gods plan, by rejecting the Son.
The third person of the Trinity is God the Holy
Spirit. It is the Spirit which provides the means or the mechanism or the power
by which we can interact with God and function in our spiritual life. And
again, religions and philosophies look to man’s ability or man’s power or man’s
effort to function within a human defined spirituality, which is a false
spirituality.
When Adam sinned, the entire human race was doomed to
sin, and doomed to an eternal separation from God.
But God came up with a plan, by which man could be
reconciled back to a relationship with God, and that plan of course was for
Jesus Christ to pay the price for mans transgressions, and in effect purchased
man’s freedom from sin and death.
And here Paul states that as a result of the cross on
which Jesus Christ hung and paid the price for our sins, then we have received
atonement, or reconciliation back to a relationship with God.
The relationship is of course, a potential, even
though Christ paid the price, we as individuals still must believe in Him and
in His work, and who He is, and so forth.
And it is because of this reconciliation, which is a
result of Christ’s work, that we have a basis for rejoicing. Since before, we
had nothing, and now we have eternal life and a life with God.
It remains for man to recognize his own arrogance, and
accept God and His plan, and the mandated faith in Christ and in doctrine.
For without that, man has only his arrogance, and
nothing else.
