Psalm 34:10

Copyright Ó 2014 J. Neely
Psalm 34:10

10 The young lions [kaphiyr] do lack [ruwsh], and suffer hunger [ra`eb]: but they that seek [darash] the LORD [Yahovah] shall not want [chacer] any good [towb] thing.   KJV-Interlinear

10 The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.   ESV

Do you know the three levels of grace provision?  Young lions are not only young but full of energy and speed and strength and should for all intents and purposes have an easy life as far as obtaining their needs.  But often times, they are unable to furnish for themselves and they go hungry.

Young lions also refers to the very young who are dependent on the older lions to provide the food and resources that the young ones require.  And too, even the older lions are unable to provide for themselves let alone the young ones, so hunger is always near.

Young lions also refers to the animal kingdom, which is dependent on the laws of nature.  The young rule, the old fade away.  The victims are always at the mercy of the predator and so forth.

And then we get to the principle of this verse as far as it relates to us as people.

God in the older and is always able to provide for anyone and everyone.  If something is lacking, then it is for some other reason, but never related to Gods ability, for God has infinite ability and infinite resources.  God is never lacking in provisions.

We as people can choose to follow the rules of nature and live as nature lives, dependent on the natural laws that govern nature, meaning that we depend on our luck or our abilities or our talents and so forth.  And that always leads to some degree of success, as well as always resulting in our ultimate final failure.

Or, we can choose to seek God.  And here is the key to this verse and passage.

Seeking God does not mean simply being alive and here.  It means an active pursuit of truth and knowledge and understanding and growth as God has defined our purpose in life, not as we desire and certainly not at our convenience.  Seeking requires instruction and learning, which most people do not pursue, unfortunately.

For those who seek, then there is always provision, and never lacking.

God offers three levels of grace provision for humanity.

The first is common grace, which applies to all of humanity, believer as well as unbeliever.  God provides us all with an environment, air to breathe, economies, relationships as in marriage, divine establishment principles that hold this worlds social order together, and so forth. He also provides for salvation to everyone.

The second is spiritual grace where God provides more grace for believers only.  The spiritual world applies to the saved and not to the unsaved.  This primarily makes doctrine available to believers for their spiritual edification and growth to maturity.  Most believers remain at this level simply because the lack the desire to advance through legitimate learning.

Then there is greater grace which applies to spiritually mature believers only.  Much if not all of Gods blessings fall into this category of people.  Few in number to say the least, but for are those who ‘seek’ God for all of the right reasons and who persevere through the thick and thin of life in order to remain in Gods eyes, never lack.

Psalm 34:9

9 O fear [yare'] the LORD [Yahovah], ye his saints [qadowsh]: for there is no want [machcowr] to them that fear [yare'] him.   KJV-Interlinear

9 Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!   ESV

Fear, ‘yare,’ means to stand in awe, to respect, to recognize, to honor.  And in order to have this attitude, you must first know and understand, and then believe who and what God is, and who and what the scriptures are, and how they all fit together in the realities of life and especially how they fit in your life personally.

When the Bible says flatly, that the believer shall lack for nothing, it is not speaking of worldly things.

Recall that when Jesus first came into this world, His ministry was one of miracles, among other things, to establish His credentials, visually, as the Messiah.  The crowds grew and grew in numbers as people came to see the miracles, and as people came to get their worldly fix or healing.  To some extent His ministry became a side show, or a circus, wherein people came to be entertained or impressed, or to get something for nothing, as it were.

No one was standing in line to join a daily study, in order to learn doctrine or to grow up in their spiritual lives.

Even the disciples were caught off guard when the crucifixion occurred.  Most people missed the point entirely.

Instead of wanting their spiritual healing, they all wanted their physical healing.  Fix my arm.  Fix my leg.  Cure my disease.  Restore my sight and so forth.  Everyone wanted something for the now. No one was interested in the eternal.

The same is today.  People want things mostly. They want a job or money or clothes or to be loved, or to be healed of some physical ailment.  And when they do not get these things, they become frustrated or angry.

They never once consider that they should be studying in order to learn, studying in order to understand, studying in order to apply principles to their life, studying on order to grow up in their spiritual life, studying in order that all their needs will be supplied.

That is the fear of the Lord, the respect of the Lord, the recognition of truth and reality over ones personal wants.

The desires of the heart, are based on the content of the heart. The heart representing the ongoing function of the soul.

What you think is what you are, and what you think determines the desires of your soul.  Think doctrine and the desires of doctrine are fulfilled.  Think other things and those desires are not.

God provides doctrine, of which there is no lack.

The world will have its ups and downs.  History has demonstrated periods of plagues, famines, wars, economic depressions and everything else you can imagine.  Our life and destiny is not in the history of the world or in its volatile circumstances.

Our life and destiny depends on the content of our soul, and a doctrinal content means compliance with Gods will and the right path to a perfect and complete life.

If you are always looking of the perfect life, for the perfect day to day activity, a life with no problems where everything goes the way you want it to go, then your expectations are unrealistic and your priorities are out of sync with Gods plan.

Into everyone's life will come prosperity and poverty, feast and hunger, good times and not so good times.

You can ride the rollercoaster emotionally with the world and always be unstable, or you can pursue Bible doctrine and achieve real stability and orientation in life for your life.

Romans 2:20

Copyright Ó 2014 J. Neely
Romans 2:20

20 An instructor [paideutes] of the foolish [aphron], a teacher [didaskalos] of babes [nepios], which hast [echo] the form [morphosis] of knowledge [gnosis] and [kai] of the truth [aletheia] in [en] the law [nomos].   KJV-Interlinear

20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—    ESV

Paul continues the descriptions of the advantages that the Jews possessed, before he drops the hammer of heavy rebuke on their abuse of those advantages.

They presumed that they are the instructor of the foolish and yet it was they who were foolish.

They presumed the instruction of babes, and yet it was they who were the babes.

So Paul turns their arguments, arguments that were common among the Jews, against them. Their own arguments actually serve to convict themselves.

The use of the word for foolish, can apply to those who lack understanding, as well as to those who are actually wicked.  And moreover, it serves to identify those who ae both.

Instructor implies content of instruction.  A teacher implies the qualification of the position.

And yet people who lack doctrine and truth within their soul, are neither instructor or teacher.

You cannot teach what you do not know.  You cannot instruct when you lack the discernments of instruction.

The form of knowledge, refers to the external form or appearance, rather than the internal content. The superficial rather than the substance.

And the reference to the law, distinguishes the content of the scriptures as the accurate and source of truth, which is from God.

So, the Jews used superficial references without the detailed content.  They taught ambiguous concepts without the content to back them up.

And that is exactly what people do today.  They say all of the right words, but their words, the amens, the praise this or that, carry no content, no instruction, and therefore have no edifying impact on the hearers of those convenient phrases.

Simple phrases and clichés do not teach, and do not advance anyone in their spiritual growth.

If you went to school as a child and all you heard was the teacher praising you for being there, you would not learn the alphabet, not learn words, not learn anything.  Only that it was good of you to have been there.

And what good is that?  No good at all.

And Paul makes it very clear that even though the Jews had the right content, namely the scriptures, if they are not taught in detail, then the teaching is empty.  If the instructors themselves did not know the content, then their teaching was lacking.

And furthermore, you cannot teach one standard, and then require two standards, one for yourself and another for others.

Romans 2:19

Romans 2:19

19 And [te] art confident [peitho] that thou thyself [seautou] art [einai] a guide [hodegos] of the blind [tuphlos], a light [phos] of them which are in [en] darkness [skotos],KJV-Interlinear

19  and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,   ESV

The worst type of fool, is one who believes sincerely that he is wise and not the fool.  And so Paul continues the reprimand of the local Jews, who were proud, wicked and hypocritical, never for a moment believing that they were these things.

There are three types of fool.

The first is simply not interested in the Bible and therefore by rejecting truth, is subscribed by default to the lies of the world and therefore becomes a fool for believing and depending on the nonsense of the world.

The second type of fool, is one who makes a front or a pretense of the Bible or God or such things, but never learns the inaccuracy of their beliefs, and never pursues a learning process in order to learn the truths of life.

The third type of fool, is one who studies diligently, but incorrectly, but misapplies what they learn thus arriving at the wrong conclusions.  This is where the Jews were.  They studied the Law diligently but they missed the whole point of its purpose, believing that its works were a means of salvation, instead of the proof of ones inability to work for salvation and therefore needing a Savior to do all of the work for them.  They missed the principles of salvation, the principles of confession, the principles of the spiritual life and so forth.

Today, most Christians are in the those second and third categories of fools. They know all of the words and stories, but miss the whole point of spiritual growth and development.

Most Christians today, as with the Jews of Pauls day, believe they are right, believe that they are sincere enough, and believe that, that is quite enough for them to be acceptable to God.  And they are wrong.

Unfortunately, most will not discover the error of their ways, because they simply do not look for the errors within themselves. They do not abide by Gods mandate to learn by being taught through study daily, they do not confess regularly and thus remain perpetually out of fellowship.  They do not promote doctrine because they do not know it.  They do not support Bible study, because they are subtly selfish.

Yet they will see themselves as wise in their own eyes, and whatever it is that they do, is quite sufficient as far as they are concerned.

And in the next couple of verses, we will see that they teach or promote their wrong beliefs, never pausing for a moment to check themselves or the accuracy of their own beliefs.

You cannot know if what you believe or know is right or wrong, unless you constantly compare or test it against a standard.

And the spiritual life, being constantly hammered by the world throughout your entire life, demands that you be constantly on guard and alert.  And that comes by means of a daily study.
