Isaiah
30:2
2 That walk [halak] to go down [yarad] into Egypt [Mitsrayim], and
have not asked [sha'al] at my mouth [peh]; to strengthen [`azaz]
themselves in the strength [ma`owz] of Pharaoh [Par`oh], and to trust [chacah] in
the shadow [tsel] of Egypt [Mitsrayim]! KJV-Interlinear
2 who set out to go down to
Egypt, without asking for my direction, to take refuge in the protection of
Pharaoh and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt! ESV
In the previous verse, if you were able to get beyond
the hair comments, then you know that rejection of truth, means absence of truth,
and therefore the tendency is to go astray from the natural order to life. The natural order is truth. The unnatural
order is evil. And this going against
truth, leads to the pattern of sins in ones life.
There are some indicators of this characteristic of
society, but those indicators are there only for ones discernment and
recognizing the spiritual state or lack of it, of society, not there for ones
condescension or comment or judging.
Isaiah continues.
When truth is lacking, and dysfunction sets in, and
sin sets in, then the obvious course is to Egypt.
Does that mean that people move to Egypt? No.
Egypt is often referred to as, going down to Egypt.
And the going down, is the continued spiral of
spiritual dysfunction
Egypt is often used as the place of sin, the place of the
rejection of God, of Christ and the place of the pursuit of false gods and
earthly things.
Wickedness is the typical description of people who
lack a spiritual life, lack a functioning spiritual life, or who have no
spiritual life.
And their covering or protective environment is now
Egypt, or the false things of life.
They not only cover themselves in the false, but they
become comfortable in the false.
They do not ask God his advice. We have already seen
that Gods advice is ignored. They simply
go.
And not only do they not ask, and simply go, but they
think nothing of their decision to go in that direction.
When truth is rejected, then wickedness takes hold of
your life, then you think things and do things that are unreasonable, but seem
perfectly normal to you.
Not studying the Bible seems perfectly unnecessary.
Learning truth seems unnecessary.
Discovering your error seems unnecessary. After all, you will not believe that you have
any errors.
And this is a very dangerous trap, one into which you
may never discover that you have fallen.
Until it is too late, that is.
When you seek shelter in the false, and find comfort in
the false, then there is no reason to search for something else, until the
repercussions of the false come crashing down all around you, then and only
then is there a chance that your eyes might open and your reasoning might question
whether you should be thinking something else.
But still, when in the trap for an extended period, then
discovering truth and learning it and moving toward it, is a very difficult
thing to do. Your thinking has to be transformed, and stubbornness is a very
powerful barrier to making that change.
Better to have never fallen in to the trap, than to never
find out that you are already in it.
