Proverbs 1:14
14 Cast [naphal] in thy
lot [gowral] among [tavek] us; let us all have one ['echad] purse [kiyc]: KJV-Interlinear
14 throw in your lot among us; we will all
have one purse” ESV
The last
enticement that is presented in the series, comes in the form of casting lots.
The word for a lot, gowral, implies an inheritance for the potential for more
gain.
But casting lots
is a game of chance, or a form of gambling, wherein you throw the dice or the
pebbles, as it were, for a chance for more winnings.
But we all know,
that in gambling, the odds are in favor of the house. The house, in effect,
owns all of the numbers, while you who are placing the bet have only the chance
at one set of numbers. In other words, the odds of winning are few, and the
odds of losing are many.
So the enticement
comes in the form of easy winnings, which is following on the heels of easy
money in the form of crime, but when joining in with others who are doing the
same thing, the picture of the easy life, is a false picture. And the promise
of more, is a false promise.
And all false
things have one thing in common, and have only one guarantee, and that is loss
and failure.
In evil, as it is
in crime, a person has to do a lot of work, and do it in secret, so that his
work is not revealed, or made known to others. Evil cannot be done out in the
open, so it does not provide a life of ease.
The spiritual
life, on the other hand is merely studying and learning and using what you
study and learn in your daily life. It can be done in the open, and not in
secret, and it will certainly provide a life of ease.
Throwing in your
lot with evil, and the enticement of sharing in a bigger purse, is a lie.
In evil, there is
always someone bigger at the top. And that means everyone below the top, will
lose. And you will never be on the top, therefore, in evil, your destiny is one
of guaranteed loss and failure.
