Isaiah
31:7
7 For in that day [yowm] every man ['iysh] shall cast away [ma'ac] his idols ['eliyl] of silver [keceph], and his idols ['eliyl] of gold [zahab], which your own hands [yad] have made [`asah] unto you for a
sin [chet']. KJV-Interlinear
7 For in that day everyone shall cast away
his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which your hands have sinfully made
for you. ESV
In that day, is a
general reference to a time when these events will take place. With respect to
individuals, it refers to the time when the individual repents and changes
their way. However, Isaiah uses the term every man, or everyone, which is a
reference to a society-wide change. And of course, when referring to the mass
repentance of the Jewish nation, then the phrase, in that day, refers to the
end times of human history, or the final months and days immediately preceding
the second advent of Christ.
The tribulation,
is the last segment of time, immediately prior to the second advent of Christ.
The tribulation will last seven years. It begins immediately after the rapture
of believers from our dispensation, and continues for seven years, and ends
with the second advent of Christ.
During those seven
years, the most horrible things in all of human history will occur. And during
the last months and years of the tribulation, the city of Jerusalem will be
surrounded and assaulted over and over again, but somehow, by the grace of God,
it will survive until the very end.
During that time
of intense pressure, the Jewish people within that city will come to their
senses, will repent and turn to Christ, and give up all of their old ways and
beliefs, as it were, herein referred to as idols of gold and silver.
Gold and silver
are common ingredients for making idols, but they are also references to
secular priorities that people have set for themselves.
And the phrase,
made with your own hands, clearly describes that all of the sinful paths that
people have taken, were due to their own decisions, and of their own making.
Regardless of the
type or make up of the idols, or distractions, or lusts, or attitudes, that
people formed for themselves, in lieu of Bible doctrine, those choices were
made against God, and against Christ, and against truth.
And as the entire
period of the tribulation will portray, the human race, as a whole, will bring
itself into the tribulation, because of all of the collectively wrong choices
that have, and will, be made throughout history.
And specifically,
the Jewish race, which has historically and stubbornly rejected Christ, will
not repent until the extreme state of world ending events, take place. That is
the quintessence of stubbornness and arrogance.
And of course,
this is not restricted to the Jewish race, but is a worldwide attitude of being
negative toward Christ, that will bring the entire planet into the tribulation,
and to the self-destructive near extinction of humanity.
Sometimes, it
takes tremendous extremes, before people actually see the truth, and change.
