Psalm 38:2

Psalm 38:2

2 For thine arrows [chets] stick fast [nachath] in me, and thy hand [yad] presseth me sore [nachath].   KJV-Interlinear

2 For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me.  ESV

This verse conveys the idea of the stresses and burdens and discipline that can descend down upon a person, from seemingly everywhere.

Because of our weaknesses and failures in life, we are constantly hampered by the repercussions of our own transgressions.

Our transgressions can be outright sins, or they can come from passive indifferences, or our discontentment’s, or whatever, that we might have regarding our role in life.

Regardless of the source of our failures, Christ is standing nearby ready to lower the hammer on us in a variety of ways. And when that happens, our life can be turned upside down, and certainly things can become very inconvenient for us.

But the stresses that accompany whatever difficulties we may encounter, are usually enough to wake us up and make us aware of our own flaws, and of our own failed decisions or actions.

The phrase, stick fast, refers to the disciplinary action that descends down upon us.

The arrows, refer to the disciplinary action its self.

And this is not a single arrow, but a barrage of many arrows, from which we cannot get out of the way, or hide from, or shield ourselves from, because they all strike their mark. Namely you.

The obvious response to Gods discipline, is to cease in that pattern of life or activity that got you into that trouble. The obvious stupid response, is to not change from that pattern that got you into trouble.

But, stubborn is as stubborn does, which is the same as stupid is as stupid does.

And of course the best response is to recognize the situation as it really is, and learn from it, and change yourself.

Romans 6:7

Romans 6:7

7 For [gar] he that is dead [apothnesko] is freed [dikaioo] from [apo] sin [hamartia].  KJV-Interlinear

7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.  ESV

There is an old saying, that when a slave dies, it is only then in death that he is truly set free. And though the saying applied to physical death, there is more to this principle than meets the eye.

When we are born physically alive, we are born with the sin nature already intertwined within our physical body. We are born physically alive but spiritually dead because of the existence of that sin nature within us.

Our spiritual death was due to Adams original sin, which was and is handed down from parent to child, from generation to generation.

We have already studied the implications of this situation, regarding eternal condemnation.

A person has to grow up and attain an age or a status of accountability, before God will hold them accountable for their personal sins.

No one is condemned because of the sins of someone else. Each and every person is condemned because of their own committed sins.

So in this life, we have two strikes against us. The first is Adams original sin, which we were born with, and the second is our own personal sins, which we commit because of our own decisions.

Without God, or some spiritual resolution, we are trapped as slaves to sin, and sin becomes our cruel master.

Therefore, in order to be free from that master, we must die, since that master, which is sin, cannot and will not set us free.

In Gods plan, we symbolically died to sin, as portrayed in the baptism ritual. The reality of our death to sin, comes through faith, which secures our salvation, and through which the Holy Spirit descends into each one of us, and performs the real spiritual baptism, which accomplishes our release from sin, which is portrayed as death to sin.

But even after salvation, we are still physically alive in this world, with our physical bodies which still have the sin nature contained within.

In order to remove all remaining sin, then our physical bodies have to die to sin, and our physical bodies have to be replaced with resurrection bodies.

Therefore, in physical death, our physical bodies are discarded along with the sin that is contained within them, and both body and sin dissolve and are abolished forever.

Our soul and spirit, neither of which are infected with sin, leave the body, and go to heaven to be with the Lord.

At some appointed future time, a resurrection will occur, and we will be reunited, soul and spirit, with a better and incorruptible body.

In order to free ourselves from the taint of sin, we must pass through a death, which severs all ties with the slave master of sin. And that is accomplished through faith and through resurrection.

Romans 6:6

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Romans 6:6

6 Knowing [ginosko] this [touto], that [hoti] our [hemon] old [palaios] man [anthropos] is crucified with [sustauroo] him, that [hina] the body [soma] of sin [hamartia] might be destroyed [katargeo], that henceforth [meketi] we [hemas] should [douleuo] not [meketi] serve [douleuo] sin [hamartia].  KJV-Interlinear

6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.  ESV

The phrase old self, or old man, is a reference to the sin nature, under which we would be permanently enslaved were it not for salvation.

The word for destroyed, means abolished or done away with, in a permanent sense.

The phrase, serving sin, is an expression of bondage or slavery, in an absolute sense wherein we have no freedom or say whatsoever in our life.

Jesus Christ went to the cross and accomplished the work of destroying sin, such that it no longer has a hold over humanity.

Our baptism, in the symbolic sense, demonstrates the principle of our death to sin, and therefore our freedom from sin, such that sin as a concept, has no claim or hold over our lives anymore.

Unbelievers, are not condemned because of sin. Unbelievers are condemned because they choose their own works, over the work of Christ. They do this by refusing to believe in Christ, and therefore refusing to accept His work. In doing this they rely on their own works to elevate themselves up to a level equal with God, which is completely impossible.

Therefore unbelievers, fail, and their failure will be eternal because of their stubbornness in refusing to believe in Christ.

While we are still alive in this world, we still have the sin nature incorporated within the framework of our physical body. But in terms of death and eternity, that sin nature died on the cross, and therefore when we leave this physical body, the sin nature will die and decay along with the physical body.

To us, because of Christ, we are no longer bound, or obligated to the sin nature as far as eternity is concerned.

Right now it is certainly an inconvenience to our life, however because of our salvation, we have confession to God the Father, which gives us a release from and, an independence from, the sin nature.

The sin nature then, is rendered impotent and powerless with respect to our life, so long as we comply with Gods plan, and function within our spiritual life.  It can only create problems in this life, now, but has no hold whatsoever in eternity.

Proverbs 1:8

Proverbs 1:8

8 My son [ben], hear [shama`] the instruction [muwcar] of thy father ['ab], and forsake [natash] not the law [towrah] of thy mother ['em]:   KJV-Interlinear

8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching,   ESV

In general, the terms father and mother refer to the parents of a child. But in the spiritual realm, the term father typically is a reference to God, and that your mother typically is a reference to human authority.

Instruction, is a reference to hearing and learning the principles of truth, while teaching, is generally used to explain and describe the application or use of those principles in one’s daily life.

The form of address, with regard to the son, is symbolic of a teacher and student relationship.

The teacher is the authority, and the student is not the authority. The student is the one being taught. The student lacks wisdom, because he lacks understanding, because he lacks knowledge, because he lacks experience, which is application to the daily life. The student, is the individual without portfolio.

In the student, or the son, is the identification that each and every one of us has, as human beings.

We are all students of life, and we are all students of truth.

One of the very first mandates that God places on each and every one of us, is to hear.

And not only hear, but to listen and learn. And not only to learn, but to apply what we learn, appropriately, and correctly, to our daily lives.

This mandate establishes the authority of parents over their children, with the presumption that the parents are instructing and teaching in truth. Anything taught outside of truth, is a violation by the parents of this mandate.

The child is to listen and learn, and live their life accordingly. Anything outside the proper application of truth, is a violation of this mandate on the part of the child.

For us all, God is the authority, doctrine is the principle, and a spiritual life is the application.

This is something in which nearly 99% of all Christians fail. Because in this day and age there is more interest in the secular ways of life, and the pretense of public appearance, which is phony.

Too many try to put on a front, while in their soul, they are more concerned with how people think or perceive them, then they are of how God thinks of them.

The spiritual life is not taken seriously, and is not thought of as important enough, to set aside their current attitude, and replace it with a genuine humility and honesty of a legitimate spiritual life.

Hearing, requires the discipline and the desire to listen and learn truth.

Forsake, means the spreading or scattering of truth, such that it is diluted down in compromise and unimportance, which is what most people do when they ignore God, Christ, doctrine, and their spiritual life.

And we are told to not forsake, or not disregard this spiritual aspect of our life.
