Psalm 38:22

Copyright  2016 J. Neely
Psalm 38:22

22 Make haste [chuwsh] to help [`ezrah] me, O Lord ['Adonay] my salvation [tashuw`ah].   KJV-Interlinear

22 Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation! ESV

This concludes one of the Psalms of confession. And it clearly points out the dangers that sin and the sin nature, have on ones life, if there is not some type of intervention that will minimize those dangers, or even make them go away.

As a person lives their life, they are faced with constant dangers from this world, most of which come from the unseen realm, or beyond our ability to see the many factors that can have an impact on our life.

Salvation, is the most important condition that a person can have, because it places you within the structure of God’s grace and mercy and blessing.

Spiritual growth, likewise is one of the most important conditions that person can have, because it builds your relationship with God through Christ, as well as completing the structure of your own personal essence, meaning and purpose.

But sin and the sin nature are ever present, and will destroy that relationship if you allow them to, simply by ignoring your spiritual responsibilities.

Therefore, confession is your ace in the hole, which allows you to maintain a functioning relationship with God through Christ, so that your spiritual life will function as it should, and your spiritual growth will complete your life as to the meaning and purpose that God has intended for you.

And therefore the close of the Psalm, make haste, and that is exactly what God does, when you confess your sins, you are immediately restored into fellowship and into a functional relationship with God.

Outside of fellowship, you have the remainder of this Psalm, which clearly describes sorrow and weakness and self-destruction, none of which are good things.

God is faithful, and when He makes provision, He executes that provision immediately.

Psalm 38:21

Psalm 38:21

21 Forsake [`azab] me not, O LORD [Yahovah]: O my God ['elohiym], be not far [rachaq] from me.   KJV-Interlinear

21 Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me!  ESV

People forsake one another, all of the time. Just as we saw in the previous verse, good intentions, even sincerity, are often times a bad direction down the wrong path.

And when anyone is forcing you, or is leading you down the wrong path, then they are an enemy, because they are not truth.

God is truth. God never promotes false concepts.

The word for Lord, is a personal title of the Messiah, who is the God-man, namely Jesus Christ.

Since God is truth, and God is consistent, and God never changes, then He will never lead you astray, nor betray you, nor forsake you.

All of Gods blessings, and promises, are perfect, and permanent.

Once saved, always saved. Once blessed, always blessed. Once God has provided something for you, it can never be taken away.

God will never forsake those who belong to Him. And everyone who has believed in Jesus Christ, belongs to God.

When Bible doctrine has been learned, and inculcated into your soul, then God who is the living and written word, is as close as your thoughts, and resident in your soul.

Psalm 38:20

Psalm 38:20

20 They also that render [shalam] evil [ra`] for good [towb] are mine adversaries [satan]; because I follow [radaph] the thing that good [towb] is.   KJV-Interlinear

20 Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.  ESV

Not only does being a believer in Christ, cause you to be an enemy of the world, you will also be faced with a world that has right and wrong turned upside down.

Enemies of Christians, are beyond counting.

They don’t include only other people, but enemies include wrong philosophies, wrong types of thinking, wrong types of reasoning or rationale, all of which arrive at wrong conclusions.

Many people have good intentions, and they are sincere in their beliefs, but when doctrine, which is truth, is absent from thinking, then all of the sincerity and good intentions in the world, will not correct wrong thinking.

Many people misconstrue their efforts, as good, when in fact their efforts are not good.

The easiest way to know whether your thoughts, actions, or efforts, are good or not, is simply to compare your life, with that required by Bible doctrine, and see if they match up.

In most cases they will not match up.

The easiest questions to ask are,
Do you confess your sins to God the Father on a regular, or daily basis?
Do you pursue or participate in a daily Bible study through instruction?
Do you listen and learn, and apply the things you have learned to your daily life?

And to these three questions most people cannot honestly answer them, yes.

And this means that the thinking of your mind, will in fact have some glitches. Anything that you do while out of fellowship, is wrong.

A wrong thing done in a wrong way, is wrong.
A right thing done in a wrong way, is wrong.
A wrong thing done in a right way, is wrong.
A right thing done in a right way, is the only way it can be right.

Lack of understanding, lack of learning, lack of fellowship, simply means that you cannot be doing things in the right way. And that leaves the door open for the deception of, sincerity and good intentions, to lead you down the wrong path.

Doing evil, and calling it good, whether done intentionally, or whether done accidentally, is irrelevant. Wrong is wrong, and wrong cannot be made into a right. And wrong is an enemy of truth.

Psalm 38:19

Psalm 38:19

19 But mine enemies ['oyeb] are lively [chay], and they are strong [`atsam]: and they that hate [sane'] me wrongfully [sheqer] are multiplied [rabab].   KJV-Interlinear

19 But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully.  ESV

The immediate result in your life, when you pursue a legitimate spiritual life through Christ, is that all the world becomes your enemy. Or better stated, you become the enemy of the world.

Satan runs the world right now. And his primary objective, is to see that you fail in your spiritual life.

So when you turn to Christ, and are saved, you are an immediate enemy. But more than that, when you turn to doctrine and attempt to develop your spiritual life, then your enemies are magnified.

Enemies are lively, meaning they are active around the clock and throughout your life.

Enemies are strong, meaning they have far more worldly resources than you have.

And the worlds hate for you, is wrong, but it is multiplied by the magnitude of Satan’s effort and influence in this entire world.

Psalm 38:18

Copyright  2015 J. Neely
Psalm 38:18

18 For I will declare [nagad] mine iniquity [`avon]; I will be sorry [da'ag] for my sin [chatta'ah].   KJV-Interlinear

18 I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.  ESV

The word for sorry, da-ag, does not refer to feeling bad about one sins, but carries the connotation of acknowledgment and accepting responsibility for what you have done.

Confession of sins, is taught in the fourth and fifth sacrifices, which are spelled out in Leviticus chapters four and five respectively, and further described in 1 John 1:9.

When a person has sinned, if they are a believer in Christ, then they place themselves outside of a functioning relationship with God. They are still saved, but their relationship is off-line, so to speak.

One of the fundamental principles of Christianity, is that a functional relationship with God, only occurs while a person is in fellowship.

Confession restores your fellowship, so that your relationship functions as it should.

An unbeliever, has no relationship with God, and therefore, confession has no effect.

Once a person is saved, by believing in Christ, then the issue becomes whether or not they will live their life while residing in fellowship, or out of fellowship.

Sin and confession, are the key elements that determine whether you are in fellowship or out of fellowship.

That is, when you commit a sin, you are immediately out of fellowship. When you confess your sins, then you are immediately restored back into fellowship.

Because most people do not follow the confession principle on a daily basis, they will live the bulk of their life out of fellowship, and therefore do not have a functional spiritual life.

All spiritual activity, functions only when you are in fellowship.

And as stated within this verse, confession is mandatory, and your attitude that accompanies confession, is your acknowledgment and acceptance of the things that you have thought, or said, or done.

Psalm 38:17

Copyright  2015 J. Neely
Psalm 38:17

17 For I am ready [kuwn] to halt [tsela`], and my sorrow [mak'ob] is continually [tamiyd] before me.   KJV-Interlinear

17 For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me.  ESV

Ready to halt, is an expression of exhaustion. Things are so difficult and so burdensome, that in order to keep from falling down or stumbling a person has to lean on something, coming to a complete stop in order to catch his breath, but is unable to continue on.

Sorrow, is a reference to the anguish, affliction, grief, pain, and sorrow that accompanies the sin nature.

And without God, or Christ, or Bible doctrine, or a functioning spiritual life, then the only thing that person has is the environment of the sin nature, which is overwhelming and far beyond the ability of any individual, to handle.

There are only two environments in which you can live your life. The first is the spiritual life, and the second is the sin nature life.

And without the spiritual life, then the sin nature life is always before you, always present, and never goes away.

It places constant and continual and around-the-clock pressures on ones life, and never lets up.

Life brings the difficulties and stresses into your day-to-day activities, by means of illness or injury, or simply the worries and anxieties that are so common in the human experience. And these are examples or symbols of the bigger picture of what the reality of real life, really is, when the spiritual life is absent.

And of course, everyday life, or experience as we call it, should be one of the better teachers of how weak we really are, and therefore the need for something greater.

And of course since life is a day-to-day experience, so also Bible doctrine and learning it and growing up, should be a part of our day-to-day experience as well.

Psalm 38:16

Copyright  2015 J. Neely
Psalm 38:16

16 For I said ['amar], Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice [samach] over me: when my foot [regel] slippeth [mowt], they magnify [gadal] themselves against me.   KJV-Interlinear

16 For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!”  ESV

People are at their worst when they pretend or refuse to forgive, and people are certainly at their very worst when they refuse to let you forget your mistakes, and prefer to remind you so that you won’t forget your mistakes. All the while ignoring their own flaws.

But such is the way of the world.

Within the realm of the sin nature, there is always the drive of inordinate competition, and the drive to control. And what better way to control someone else, than to remind them of their flaws and mistakes.

Everyone who has ever lived in this world, has made mistakes.

No one has the right to judge anyone else, unless they themselves are perfect, which no one is.

And the plea or prayer here, is that those who would superimpose themselves over us, and even try to rejoice over our failures or flaws, and even try to elevate themselves because of our flaws, will themselves not have the advantage or benefit from their judgmental and controlling attitude against us.

And the answer to the prayer, is that God is the ultimate and sovereign judge, and people are not.

People who judge others, in effect judge themselves.

People who attempt to elevate themselves as the better, will always lose, will always fail, and will themselves be guilty of far worse than any flaw or mistake that you have committed or that they remind you of.

Psalm 38:15

Psalm 38:15

15 For in thee, O LORD [Yahovah], do I hope [yachal]: thou wilt hear [`anah], O Lord ['Adonay] my God ['elohiym].   KJV-Interlinear

15 But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.  ESV

There are only two environments in which you can live. The first is the sin environment, and the second is the spiritual environment. The vast majority of humanity lives in the sin environment, because most people do not understand the difference between the two, and are not interested in pursuing a daily study in order to learn the differences between the two environments.

The sin environment, which we typically refer to as being out of fellowship, is the environment in which your spiritual life does not function. The sin environment is a separation from a relationship with God. The sin environment offers false views of life, and is one of helplessness and hopelessness, which are oftentimes not recognized, because the individual lacks the necessary knowledge, in order to see the reality of their situation.

This Psalm has been describing the burdens and hopelessness of the sin related environment.

And now in verse 15, the recognition of that hopelessness, and the solution of that hopelessness, are described.

In the sin environment, there is no one and nothing that you can turn to, or speak to, or reach out to, in order to help you in life.

There is only one source of help in all of creation, and that is God, through Christ, by means of the Holy Spirit.

And thus the call to God, because God is the only one that can hear, and the only one who can solve the helpless situation.

To wait on the Lord, is the recognition that God is the only course of action that is available to the individual believer in Christ.

To wait on sin, in contrast, is a wait forever for nothing to happen.

Therefore, waiting on the Lord, is the correct direction of one’s attention, and focus on the only true solution in life.

God is the sovereign authority over all that exists, and the only higher authority that can hear your prayer, and answer it.

The confession of sin, is a form of prayer, which is offered to God the Father, the result of which is immediate restoration into fellowship.

Fellowship is the spiritual environment, in which the spiritual life functions. And that is where you should be living your life, moment by moment, day by day.

Psalm 38:14

Copyright  2015 J. Neely
Psalm 38:14

14 Thus I was as a man ['iysh] that heareth [shama`] not, and in whose mouth [peh] are no reproofs [towkechah].   KJV-Interlinear

14 I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes.  ESV

The description of the lonely victim intensifies, as he has been describing his openness to Gods inspection, and yet those who are closest to him as well as his friends and companions, put him at a distance, which compounds his helplessness and loneliness, and this leaves him vulnerable to those who would seek his life, which further isolates him.

As a man who is controlled by the sin nature, and has been indifferent toward the resources of the spiritual life, he hears nothing, because he does not listen, and in his own mouth there are no reproofs, because he refuses to see his own flaws and vulnerabilities.

And such is the nature of the individual who lives out of fellowship, and perceives himself as innocent or righteous, and certainly not subject to reproof by anyone, while refusing to acknowledge the isolation, that exists in his life.

Anyone who rejects God’s plan, and God’s design, by indifference or antagonism or the presumption that it does not apply to them, or they don’t need it, or what they already know is more than sufficient, then they will fail to recognize the pit and the isolation that they placed themselves in, and the intensification is not necessarily an emotional intensification, as it is a factual intensification, removing the individual further and further from the spiritual life, because of the negative pattern of life that they have chosen for themselves.

Psalm 38:13

Copyright  2015 J. Neely
Psalm 38:13

13 But I, as a deaf [cheresh] man, heard [shama`] not; and I was as a dumb man ['illem] that openeth [pathach] not his mouth [peh].   KJV-Interlinear

13 But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth.  ESV

Remember that this is the third of the seven penitential Psalms, also called Psalms of confession.  We listed the seven penitential psalms in the Psa. 38:1 study.

The phrases, as a deaf man, and as a dumb man, describe the total helplessness of a person when faced with the sin nature within, and the pattern of sin without.

Throughout this Psalm, from the piercing arrows to the physical and mental distress, paints a total picture of what life is like, in the spiritual sense, using the elements of this physical world, in portraying the pressures, and stresses, and helplessness that exists when the spiritual life is either nonexistent, or simply not functioning.

As we stated before, there are only two environments in which you can live.

The first is the environment of sin, or the carnal world as it is sometimes referred to, and the second is the spiritual environment wherein God has control and command of our life.

In the first environment, that of sin, and more specifically the environment that exists when a person is out of fellowship, is an environment of trouble, and hardship, and pressure, and total helplessness.

Even though you live your life from day-to-day, and likely are out of fellowship for most of that time, you are not going to experience continual hardship and pressure. But what is in view here is the pattern of your life, such that after you have taken a complete picture of your life, from birth to death, that picture, when a life is lived out of fellowship, and apart from God, will be one of absolute and total failure.

And living your life apart from God, means that you cannot complete your life with respect to your soul, and the spiritual aspects of the soul, because life under the sin nature has no resources with which to construct and complete, your otherwise incomplete existence.

When you were born, you were body and soul. You were incomplete.

When you believed in Christ, you were born again, which simply means a human spirit was added to your essence. That human spirit contains eternal life. But it also acts as a conduit which funnels truth, or Bible doctrine, into your soul, by means of the Holy Spirit, who is the communicator of truth, and by that doctrine, your soul undergoes a construction process which leads to the completion of your existence.

This only occurs when you are in fellowship, and have a functioning relationship with God through Christ.

Out of fellowship, means no functioning relationship with God, or truth, or the necessary ingredients, namely Bible doctrine, for the completion of your soul.

In fellowship, which is acquired by confession of sin to God the Father, on a regular basis, in order to maintain your in-fellowship status, is the necessary environment in which you need to live, in order to have a functioning spiritual life. It is through that framework that you can be completed, by listening, by learning, by understanding, and by applying Bible doctrine in your life.

Out of fellowship, prevents you from hearing, or even speaking, in the spiritual sense. That means you are isolated from the spiritual life. And that is a huge handicap that sets life against you.

Obviously you can speak and hear, but in the spiritual sense, when you are out of fellowship, and living within the pattern of the sin nature, your spiritual life is shut down.

And of all of the tragedies in the world, to live your life from birth to death, and have little or no spiritual resources or advancement, for preparation for eternal life, is a tremendous loss, and a total waste of ones life. It is like living for decades, and doing nothing and accomplishing nothing.

Psalm 38:12

Copyright  2015 J. Neely
Psalm 38:12

12 They also that seek [baqash] after my life [nephesh] lay snares [naqash] for me: and they that seek [darash] my hurt [ra`] speak [dabar] mischievous things [havvah], and imagine [hagah] deceits [mirmah] all the day [yowm] long.   KJV-Interlinear

12 Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long.  ESV

Throughout this psalm, David has been describing the physical and mental anguish and sorrow and distress that is a result of sin.

The word, they, identifies, or rather makes ambiguous reference to enemies, that take advantage of the physical and mental handicaps and disadvantages that are caused by sin.

Not that this is a conspiracy theory, but this does describe the state of the individual, and ones exposure to all manner of opposition, because of the existence of sin, and-or the existence of the sin nature.

For the sin nature, which is ingrained in every individual’s body, combined with sin, which is a result of decisions of evil, produce a united enemy, which is overwhelming, and far beyond the ability of any individual to overcome.

Laying snares, is a concept of someone taking advantage of your weakened position, through fraud or deceit and setting traps of any and every kind, for the purpose of ruining you.

Seeking hurt, means quite simply, the intent to injure.

Speaking mischievous things, or speaking run, indicates slander or gossip or maligning, that are intended to ruin and injure and destroy their victim.

Imagining deceits, is the action of making false claims or accusations, that are clearly unfounded.

All day long, refers to the consistent and continual onslaught of these things against you, and never letting up throughout your entire life.

You only have two environments in which to live.

The first environment is that of sin, and the second environment is that of the spiritual life.

All of these descriptions come from the environment of sin, which has only one intent, and that is to destroy. Nothing good ever comes out of the environment of sin.

There are constant problems, constant difficulties, constant stresses, that will never ever go away, while you live in this world.

The environment of the spiritual life, is a far better environment, because it gives you the resources with which to deal with, and function, in this Devils world. While living in this world, you cannot escape the difficulties of this world, but you can have better resources that will help you get through those difficulties.

To choose to live in the environment of sin, means you are going into battle with no weapons, completely outnumbered, and was only one outcome, namely you lose.  Physical and mental anguishes are a good symbolism of spiritual principles, helping us to learn and understand spiritual flaws, using physical ailments.

To choose to live in the environment of the spiritual life, which unfortunately most people do not do, means that you have the resources to live and function within this Devils world, and the guarantee from God, that you will have success, going into eternity.

Psalm 38:11

11 My lovers ['ahab] and my friends [rea`] stand [`amad] aloof from [neged] my sore [nega`]; and my kinsmen [qarowb] stand [`amad] afar off [rachowq].   KJV-Interlinear

11 My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off.  ESV

The word for lovers, ahab, refers to people that are closest to you, such as in intimacy or as family, such as brothers or sisters and such.

Friends, rea, refers to associates or fellow workers or people with which you have a regular relationship of some type.

Kinsman, qarowb, refers to neighbors, or those whom you know, but are not close at hand.

In other words, the impact on ones entire life, runs the entire range of social interaction, whether it be intimate or distant.

The sore, nega, is a reference to the infirmity whatever it is. It can be a sickness, a disease, an illness, an injury of some kind, an attitude, or whatever. But no matter what the infirmity is, it is bad enough to drive away everyone that is in your social periphery, either near or far.

And of course the spiritual lesson here, is that, spiritual decline or the absence of the spiritual life, will have an impact on your relationships, no matter what they are.

Not to say that the spiritual life will give you better relationships by default, because this is the Devils world, and other people have flaws also.

If you yourself have a poor quality spiritual life, then your relationships will be of poor quality, sooner or later.

Advancing in your spiritual life, gives you more discernment, helping you make better choices, and providing for you a better quality of life overall.

These studies are a part of the massive daily study web site at DailyBibeStudy.Org, and are written, so that you can come to Christ if you have not done so already, and therefore not be lost forever.

And if you have already believed in Christ, then these studies are written so you can learn and understand and grow in your spiritual life, so that you can come to the full knowledge of Christ, so that you can fulfill your meaning and purpose in life as God intended for you, and so you can qualify for a phenomenal eternal reward which you will have forever.  To ignore this opportunity to pursue a daily study means you will be incomplete, unfulfilled and you will lose out, big time.

The Daily Bible Study is online, making it possible as never before in all of human history, to advance in ones relationship with God, through Christ, and to complete yourself beyond your imagination.

But you have to decide to make that commitment.  No one else can study for you.  You have to do that yourself.
