Proverbs 1:6

6 To understand [biyn] a proverb [mashal], and the interpretation [maliytsah]; the words [dabar] of the wise [chakam], and their dark sayings [chiydah].   KJV-Interlinear

6 to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.  ESV

The word for understand, biyn, means to distinguish, to discern, to know the differences. In other words, to understand. Understanding comes not automatically, but after one has learned and assimilated Bible doctrine into their soul. A person has to want to learn, before they will actually listen and learn the principles taught in the Word of God.

Interpretation, refers to the meaning of a principle or precept of truth as it correctly applies to reality. This is the application of doctrine learned, to the daily life of the individual.

The words of the wise, refers to the content of Bible doctrine.

And their dark sayings, is a reference to the hidden and secret things with regard to truths, that are contained within the Bible.

Dark or secret sayings, are only dark and secret to those who don’t know or understand them.

When a person does not study and learn truth, then it is impossible for them to know or understand truth.

In order to understand truth, one has to be saved first of all, and therefore have the human spirit created within them, which we call being born again. And then a person has to be in a functional spiritual environment, which we call being in fellowship, which is obtained by means of the confession process. And then a person has to be taught, and certainly willing to be taught, and then learn the nuts and bolts of Bible doctrine, and then put together the principles and precepts of Bible doctrine, and then gain an understanding.

An unbeliever, or a non-Christian, does not have a human spirit, and therefore, has no way of having a functional spiritual life. All doctrine is viewed as nonsense, and impossible to understand. Therefore, wrong conclusions and misinterpretations are made concerning its content.

But the positive believer in Christ, who is advancing in the spiritual life, can easily learn and gain insight into the secret and dark things of Scripture.

Understand, that simply reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and knowing the popular stories from creation to David to the birth of Jesus and so forth, do not gain you the deep insight that is contained within the Bible.

It is the comprehensive process, the spiritual learning process of the believer in fellowship, by which the Holy Spirit communicates information, and channels it through the human spirit into the soul, which unlocks the so-called dark or secret things of the Bible.

To the uninformed they are mere riddles. However, to the positive believer, these secrets or riddles are clear as a bell. The content of truth is vast, and goes far beyond the mere words contained in the Bible. This is why being in fellowship throughout the learning and understanding and application process the spiritual life, is so important.
