Romans 6:6

6 Knowing [ginosko] this [touto], that [hoti] our [hemon] old [palaios] man [anthropos] is crucified with [sustauroo] him, that [hina] the body [soma] of sin [hamartia] might be destroyed [katargeo], that henceforth [meketi] we [hemas] should [douleuo] not [meketi] serve [douleuo] sin [hamartia].  KJV-Interlinear

6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.  ESV

The phrase old self, or old man, is a reference to the sin nature, under which we would be permanently enslaved were it not for salvation.

The word for destroyed, means abolished or done away with, in a permanent sense.

The phrase, serving sin, is an expression of bondage or slavery, in an absolute sense wherein we have no freedom or say whatsoever in our life.

Jesus Christ went to the cross and accomplished the work of destroying sin, such that it no longer has a hold over humanity.

Our baptism, in the symbolic sense, demonstrates the principle of our death to sin, and therefore our freedom from sin, such that sin as a concept, has no claim or hold over our lives anymore.

Unbelievers, are not condemned because of sin. Unbelievers are condemned because they choose their own works, over the work of Christ. They do this by refusing to believe in Christ, and therefore refusing to accept His work. In doing this they rely on their own works to elevate themselves up to a level equal with God, which is completely impossible.

Therefore unbelievers, fail, and their failure will be eternal because of their stubbornness in refusing to believe in Christ.

While we are still alive in this world, we still have the sin nature incorporated within the framework of our physical body. But in terms of death and eternity, that sin nature died on the cross, and therefore when we leave this physical body, the sin nature will die and decay along with the physical body.

To us, because of Christ, we are no longer bound, or obligated to the sin nature as far as eternity is concerned.

Right now it is certainly an inconvenience to our life, however because of our salvation, we have confession to God the Father, which gives us a release from and, an independence from, the sin nature.

The sin nature then, is rendered impotent and powerless with respect to our life, so long as we comply with Gods plan, and function within our spiritual life.  It can only create problems in this life, now, but has no hold whatsoever in eternity.
