Romans 5:20
20 Moreover [de] the law [nomos] entered [pareiserchomai],
that [hina] the offence [paraptoma] might abound [pleonazo].
But [de] where [hou] sin [hamartia] abounded [pleonazo], grace [charis] did much
more abound [huperperisseuo]: KJV-Interlinear
20 Now the law came in to
increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, ESV
Too often people think that the Law of Moses, and more
specifically the Ten Commandments, are the solution to sin. And that is a wrong
belief. Grace, is the solution to sin, not the Mosaic Law. The Mosaic Law, as
we have already studied, sets forth a standard with which no one can comply.
And here, Paul clearly states, that the law was given
to clearly show the boundary where sin begins.
Before the law, people probably thought that much of
what they were doing was not sinful, simply because there was no documentation.
But after the law was written, then there was adequate documentation to
demonstrate that the magnitude of sins was far greater than what anyone
imagined.
The law itself did not create more sins, it simply
documented the fact that the number of sins committed by people was far greater
than anyone would care to admit.
Therefore, with the writing of the law, the numbers of
sins that were recognized, increased dramatically.
But, by the same token, the impact of grace likewise
increased dramatically.
People were not dealing with simply one sin, namely
Adam’s original sin, but people were dealing with their own personal sins,
which they committed by choice, and were therefore held accountable for their
decisions in transgression.
No one can look back on Adams sin and blame him for
the problems of the world. Everyone must look in the mirror and see themselves,
and see that they are personally responsible for their own failure and for the
problems of this world.
Remember that when God created the angels, there was
no sin, and they were perfect. When God
created the universe, there was no sin, and it was perfect. When God restored the earth and created Adam,
there was no human sin and it was perfect.
Satans sin sent the universe into ruin, and Adams and
human sin sent the earth into ruin.
You cannot blame God, you cannot blame Satan, you
cannot blame Adam, only.
All problems in the world are a direct result of sin,
and each and every person is responsible in one way or another.
The world is not condemned by one sin. That only established
the pattern of how the world was and does function.
The world is condemned by the existence of innumerable
sins.
Likewise, grace did not solve only one sin, Adams sin,
but grace solved all sins throughout all of human history.
