Romans 7:1

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Romans 7:1

1 [e] Know ye not [agnoeo], brethren [adelphos], (for [gar] I speak [laleo] to them that know [ginosko] the law [nomos],) how that [hoti] the law [nomos] hath dominion over [kurieuo] a man [anthropos] as long as [epi] [hosos] [chronos] he liveth [zao]?   KJV-Interlinear

1 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives?  ESV

The law, refers here to the Mosaic law, which defines sin, as well as promoting sin as the useless effort of man for the perfection of man and the attainment of mans salvation.

Paul asks a rhetorical question, with the presumption that everyone who hears the question already knows the answer.

Death is a part of the world. Arrangements or contracts in this world, are obviously a part of this world. And death, brings to an end to, or cancels, all of those contracts.

Paul uses the example of marriage to teach this principle, of the cancellation of a contract, by means of death, wherein the contract is no longer binding on either party.

This will be described in the next couple of verses.

But with respect to the law, and with respect to sin, and more specifically with respect to the sin nature, is only binding on a person as long as a person is alive and living in this world.

When a person dies, that contract with the sin nature, is no longer binding.

By the same token, when a person believes in Jesus Christ, they symbolically share in the death of Christ, and therefore are no longer bound by the rules of sin. They are set free, and are bound by the rules of faith.

The law demands that you live a perfect life in order to be a perfect person, in order to be saved. Sin proves that no individual is capable of complying with the law, and therefore incapable of living the perfect life, and therefore incapable of obtaining salvation by means of their own effort or life.

And so long as they are alive in this world, they are bound by that relationship with sin.

The only way to break the contract with sin, is through death.

And the only way to break the contract with sin, and still remain alive, is through the death of Christ. And that death is attributed to each individual who believes in Christ, by means of their faith.

Once a contract has been dissolved by death, then you do not return to the former agreement and try to reestablish it. That would be ludicrous.

And that is what Paul is teaching in this passage.

Once you have been saved, and the arrangement you had with sin is no longer in affect, then it would be foolish to return to the rules of sin, and try to earn your way, as it were, in your spiritual life.

Unfortunately, too many people believe in Christ, and therefore are saved by means of their faith, but then return to the old ways and try to earn their way, through works, in their spiritual life. And that is contrary to the teaching of the principle of faith.

Proverbs 1:17

Proverbs 1:17

17 Surely in vain [chinnam] the net [resheth] is spread [zarah] in the sight [`ayin] of any bird [ba`al] [kanaph].   KJV-Interlinear

17 For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird,  ESV

The first proverb, in the strictest sense of the word, is now being presented. And it demonstrates the futility of listening to, or following in the footsteps of, those who do not pay attention to the teaching of the word of God, and those who simply disregard the teaching of the word of God.

The net and that is spread, is the judgment of God.

The net is clear and plain to see by all. There is no one, not a single person, that is not aware of Gods judgment, or of the repercussions of their choices in life.

What this proverb describes, is that everyone, makes decisions, while they are fully aware, and can plainly see the judgment of God before them. And yet, the still make the decisions, like a bird that sees the net, but will still fly directly into it, and is trapped by the certainty of that judgment.

In vain, refers to the certain failure of the sinners action, and yet knowing that failure is certain, they are still enticed by the empty promises of the world, and will pursue them anyway, all the way to their own destruction.

Unbelievers, reject Christ, knowing of the Lake of Fire, and yet they will still pursue false religions, or no religions, or philosophies that have no basis in fact or reality, even in the face of rejecting simple thought of believing in Christ, which takes no effort whatsoever.

Believers in Christ, are obviously saved, but what is set before them is their spiritual life. And yet believers, knowing that learning Bible doctrine is necessary in order to grow up and fulfill their spiritual life, will resist a daily study, or will resist instruction, in favor of their own wisdom instead of Gods wisdom. And therefore they fail in the spiritual life, and fly directly in to Gods net of discipline and loss of eternal reward.

All people make their decisions, with their eyes wide open, knowing full well that their resistance to Gods truth, whatever it may be, whether intentionally or through plain laziness, has repercussions that will not go well with them one way or another.

Therefore, no one has an excuse for the failure that is certain to come, when God, and Christ, and the mandates of the Bible are ignored.

Isaiah 31:9

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 31:9

9 And he shall pass over [`abar] to his strong hold [cela`] for fear [magowr], and his princes [sar] shall be afraid [chathath] of the ensign [nec], saith [na'um] the LORD [Yahovah], whose fire ['uwr] is in Zion [Tsiyown], and his furnace [tannuwr] in Jerusalem [Yaruwshalaim].   KJV-Interlinear

9 His rock shall pass away in terror, and his officers desert the standard in panic,” declares the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.  ESV

This final verse, completes the description of the total destruction of evil in the world.

The strongholds, represent all things that people look to for their strength and for their security and for their power.

The princes, refer to all leaders, to all leadership, to all celebrities, to all that believe they are something or somebody in this world.

And in their final moments, they will see the true opposition, which is not of this world, but recognize that it is God through Jesus Christ, alone, whom they have been opposing all along.

The ensign, refers to the banner or standard or symbol. And in this case it refers to the entire concept of Christianity.

The fire of Zion, refers to the mountain of truth, or Bible doctrine.

The furnace in Jerusalem, refers the absolute peace and completeness and power of spiritual maturity, which originates from and resides in Jesus Christ.

All of history is centered around Jesus Christ.

Although people pursue their day-to-day life chasing after this priority or that priority, or this thing or that thing, or this plan or that plan, none of it has any value whatsoever when they lack a complete spiritual life.

While humanity plays tug-of-war with himself, within the environment of this earth, there is a greater conflict that exists outside this physical world. And it is that conflict that will decide everything, not mans many conflicts, which are petty in nature, by comparison.

To ignore the greater picture of reality and life, is to end up completely and totally destroyed.

Isaiah 31:8

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 31:8

8 Then shall the Assyrian ['Ashshuwr] fall [naphal] with the sword [chereb], not of a mighty man ['iysh]; and the sword [chereb], not of a mean man ['adam], shall devour ['akal] him: but he shall flee [nuwc] from [paniym] the sword [chereb], and his young men [bachuwr] shall be discomfited [mac].   KJV-Interlinear

8 “And the Assyrian shall fall by a sword, not of man; and a sword, not of man, shall devour him; and he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be put to forced labor.  ESV

The book of Isaiah is one of the more difficult books to read and understand, simply because people do not pursue a study of the book. Once you pursue a study, then you will quickly learn that this is one of the easiest books to understand, just as the entire Bible is clear and easy to understand, when you engage in a systematic and daily study.

These last two verses, demonstrate the helplessness of man, and the hopelessness of any position that man takes on his own, in this world.

The nation of Israel, both the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom, had turned away from God. The nation as a whole, had abandoned the principles and mandates that were taught in the original Scriptures, and had set out on their own version of the spiritual life, which was completely opposite of that which was mandated by God.

As judgment, God raised up the Assyrian Empire. And evil empire to be sure, however, God often allows the raising up of evil, to confront evil. But sooner or later, that second evil will itself be destroyed, because of its own abuse, failing to see its purpose.

This verse describes the direct intervention of God, in the destruction of Assyria.

It was allowed to advance against Israel, in order to punish Israel. However, as nations go, they fail to see the reality of their purpose in this world and in life, and they themselves failed to turn to God through Christ, which in effect leaves them open to God’s judgment, for their failure.

The phrase, fall by the sword, is typically used to describe a complete destruction.

Not of a mighty man, refers to brilliant tacticians and strategists and military generals.

Not of a mean man, refers to the common soldier.

In other words the defeat of Assyria will not come at the hands of man, but through the direct intervention of God.

Wars and invasions initiated by man, take months and years, to run their course.

However, when God judges, that active judgment comes quickly. The destruction of the Sennacherib army in a single night, sets the precedent for the destruction of all armies worldwide, who will be set against Jerusalem at the end of human history.

And those armies will flee in panic and complete disorganization.

The word for discomfited, describes the attitude of complete fear and terror, and loss of courage.

As those enemy armies are systematically destroyed, so to all of their arrogance and aggressiveness will be taken from them. The word for discomfited, describes the state of nothing being left after taxes and tribute have sapped the wealth and resources of property, leaving it virtually bankrupt.

And so too, the enemies of God, will flee to their own destruction, leaving nothing, when it is all said and done.

These studies are a part of the massive daily study web site at DailyBibeStudy.Org, and are written, so that you can come to Christ if you have not done so already, and therefore not be lost forever.

And if you have already believed in Christ, then these studies are written so you can learn and understand and grow in your spiritual life, so that you can come to the full knowledge of Christ, so that you can fulfill your meaning and purpose in life as God intended for you, and so you can qualify for a phenomenal eternal reward which you will have forever.
