Isaiah 5:30

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:30

30 And in that day [yowm] they shall roar [naham] against them like the roaring [nahamah] of the sea: [yam] and if one look [nabat] unto the land, ['erets] behold darkness [choshek] and sorrow, [tsar] and the light ['owr] is darkened [chashak] in the heavens [`ariyph] thereof. KJV-Interlinear

30 And it shall growl over it in that day like the roaring of the sea. If one looks to the land, behold, there is darkness and distress; Even the light is darkened by its clouds. NASB

Even though Israel has had its terrible moments in history, this description applies to but one and only one event and time period in all of human history.  Namely that period will be at the end of the Tribulation, when Satan, through the anti-christ and all of his puppet leaders around the world, masses all of humanity against Israel for the last great and final battle of Armageddon.

The description is now enhanced to symbolize the ocean waves crashing on the shore.  It is loud, and massive and what is more, it represents the vastness of the ocean and therefore the vastness of the armies that will come up against Israel.

The roaring of the lion has already demonstrated the fierceness and ferocity and intent of the assault. Take no prisoners, in other words.  The lion does not attack his prey to keep it alive, but to devour and terminate the very life of that victim.

And so it will be in those final days and weeks and months of the Tribulation.  Israel will be assaulted with the greatest of armies ever assembled in history, and will be destroyed with the greatest violence ever used in history.

And if there were such a thing as an observer sitting somewhere on a high point, they would see utter darkness and devastation. The observer will see only the vast armies approaching the land, and therefore see that there is no safety or means of escape by sea.

The observer will see the devastation on the land, and therefore see that there is no means of escape, no place to hide, no place of safety by land.  Violent death is the only apparent option.

And this is the picture that is intended to portray the utter helplessness of those in Israel, against this huge onslaught.

Light is turned to darkness.  This portrays no hope, none whatsoever.  This also portrays the actual events of the battle, with everything on fire, with all sorts of military armament exploding everywhere, with the sky filled with smoke and debris, and the air filled with the stench of death and a howling enemy, just looking for someone to kill or torture or rape, or to do whatever.

On the one hand, there is the bloodthirsty mass of armies of humanity who are invading with but one intent, of murder and violence, driven by hate.  And on the other hand there is the horror and fear and the distress and massive anxiety of gloom and doom to the point of uncontrolled shaking, being shut up and trapped with zero possibility of deliverance.

And this is where this chapter ends.  For all who reject God, reject doctrine, reject their God assigned role and responsibilities and obligations in life, there is no happy picture, only doom and gloom.  Pretending them away, ignoring ones spiritual status, will never make the final results of ones life, go away.

There is however, a light at the end of the tunnel.  And although not mentioned here, we have studied the two generals that will arise inside of Israel who will make some very gutsy and remarkable decisions, that will result in the halting of those assaulting armies, will stall them, and will lead to the deliverance of numerous individuals, who will be delivered by Christ when His foot finally touches the ground at the Second Advent.

When Christs’ foot touches the ground, the Mountain in Jerusalem will split, with half moving to the north and the other half moving to the south, creating a vast valley connecting the ocean with the dead-sea.  Those folks will decide quickly to run through that valley to safety, with those armies in hot pursuit, and then can you guess what occurs next?  Re-read the previous sentence.

In God there is blessing, happiness and far more.  Without God, there is horrible sorrow and misery.

So now you can choose with relative safety.  And you do not have anyone pursuing you.

Isaiah 5:29

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:29

29 Their roaring [shaagah] shall be like a lion, [labiy'] they shall roar [sha'ag] [sha'ag] like young lions: [kaphiyr] yea, they shall roar, [naham] and lay hold ['achaz] of the prey, [tereph] and shall carry it away safe, [palat] and none shall deliver [natsal] it. KJV-Interlinear

29 Its roaring is like a lioness, and it roars like young lions; It growls as it seizes the prey, And carries it off with no one to deliver it. NASB

Israel has had its adversaries and enemies throughout all of history.  Israel has been used in the Bible as the symbolism of Gods nation or family, while all other countries are used to symbolize Gods enemies and the enemies of His nations.

Israel split into the two nations, the northern nation called Israel and later came to be known as Samaria, and Judah being the southern nation.

The northern nation of Israel symbolized those who separated away from God, while Judah represented those who continued to abide in Gods will.  But sooner or later that nation too, fell away, rejected the Savior, and faded from history.

When enemies rises up in battle, they bring with them yells and screams and noise makers and drums and all that they can bring, in order to raise their own adrenaline and to intimidate and strike fear in the hearts and morale of  their opponent.

Crowds do this at sporting events.  They yell as loud as they can, in order to cause stress and worry and mistakes in the opposing team.

But this roaring like a lion is more than competitive boasting, it is intended as a deadly assault for the purpose of destroying violently and totally and completely.

And this is what the enemies of God have in their hearts.  They are so full of hate, and so full of anti-God attitudes that they will rise up to destroy the people of God and even to destroy God, or so they believe.

This attitude and nature has occurred in history, but the time frame being expressed here, is the final days of history.

Now, recall our Revelations study, or review it.  During those final seven years of human rule, which is the Tribulation, life will be so horrible, so extremely horrible, that you would think that everyone, without exception, would rise up against the anti-christ and turn to God.  But not so.

Even in the face of horrendous times, the general population, worldwide, will increase their anger more and more, against the Israel specifically, but also against believers in general.

In those final days, they will invade Israel with such a passion, turn even against themselves, and kill and steal and rape and do every imaginable evil thing in order to accomplish something that they themselves do not even understand or comprehend.

Their hate will drive them.  The deceitful promises of the anti-christ will drive them.  Greed and selfishness and arrogance will drive them.  And they will roar loudly in an effort to make their hate and passion even stronger.  And we should all know that noise has no power.  It is just noise.

And they will roar like young lions.  Youth has no wisdom, no knowledge, no understanding.  Youth is typically driven spontaneously by emotion or passion or hate.  Logic and consideration for the repercussions of their actions never enter into their thoughts.

Now think for just a minute.  God is all powerful.  He created this universe and life and sustains it all on a continual basis.  What is it that you could do that is greater or even equal?  Nothing.  No human can do anything that would even come close to that of God.  We cannot even leave this planet for very long.  The weightlessness of space creates many difficulties for the human anatomy.  We certainly cannot leave the planet in huge numbers.

And yet the hate of those people in that final period, will completely blank out any reasonable thought or analysis of their situation, let alone the cause.

And on the other hand, those in Israel who have rejected God, have refused to get out when they were told, will find themselves in a killing field that has no equal in all of history.

And in the end, deliverance for negative believers will not exist.  They will die in masses.  As for their enemies, who will be charging in from all directions, their numbers will dwindle equally as fast as they kill and destroy even their own, in such a massive battle of confusion and betrayal, which likewise has no equal in history.

And still they will roar even in the face of utter devastation.  That is complete detachment from reality and reason.

Isaiah 5:28

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:28

28 Whose arrows [chets] are sharp, [shanan] and all their bows [qesheth] bent, [darak] their horses [cuwc]' hoofs [parcah] shall be counted [chashab] like flint, [tsar] and their wheels [galgal] like a whirlwind: [cuwphah] KJV-Interlinear

28 Its arrows are sharp, and all its bows are bent; The hoofs of its horses seem like flint, and its chariot wheels like a whirlwind. NASB

Although Isaiah was warning of the impending invasions of the Babylonians, followed by the Persians, followed by the Greeks, followed by the Romans, but more specifically the first of these invading forces, however, the ultimate prophecy is directed at the final invasion of Israel, which will occur at the end of the Tribulation.

Arrows being sharp indicates both an abundance of ammunition made ready for battle, and fully distributed by way of logistics to the units that would be using the ammunition.

Arrows bent, is the symbolism of weapons at the ready, loaded, armed, targeted in on their enemies.

Horses hooves counted like flint, carry two symbolisms.  One of numerous horses for transport of troops and supplies, and the other is in reference to the hardness of their hooves, or the armor that will be attached to the mobile forces.  This indicates a mobile force, a prepared force, a well build and well-armed force together with all of the necessary equipment and supplies and logistics for making a long and forced march to their distant objective.

Remember that these forces will be coming from all over the world.  They will be motivated and focused on one thing, which is the destruction of Israel.

Remember too, that in the Tribulaiton, the entire worlds economic system and public utilities, and manufacturing of domestic goods will have been decimated.  But here we learn that the military machines of the countries of the world, will be well built and well-armed and well supplied.

Wheels like whirlwind, translates into speed, and swiftness.

Back in those days that speed would be provided by chariots, or horses or wagons.  But in todays modern world, that speed translates into phenomenal air power and naval power and ground forces with tanks and cannons and endless transports and missiles and so forth.

So, when that day arrives, the invading forces against Israel, will be well armed and well prepared and well-motivated for the destruction of Israel.  Even while the rest of the world also suffers from gross neglect.

Isaiah 5:27

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:27

27 None shall be weary [`ayeph] nor stumble [kashal] among them; none shall slumber [nuwm] nor sleep; [yashen] neither shall the girdle ['ezowr] of their loins [chalats] be loosed, [pathach] nor the latchet [sarowk] of their shoes [na`al] be broken: [nathaq] KJV-Interlinear

27 No one in it is weary or stumbles, None slumbers or sleeps; Nor is the belt at its waist undone, Nor its sandal strap broken. NASB

When the time comes for the destruction of Judah, God will call upon the armies of the world, and there will be no end to the anxiousness of those willing to come and to destroy.

Throughout history the Middle East has been overrun time and time again.  It is the single most fought over piece of real estate than anywhere else in the entire world.

And in the final days, during the Tribulation, this prophecy will finally come true. The armies of the world will be eager to advance on the Middle East, seeking to destroy Israel and everything else in their path.

No slumber, means that their purpose will not be hindered even with a simple rest.  No sleep means that those armies will advance with but one objective and purpose, with impatience to destroy.

Girdle loosed, or belt loosed, indicates that they will be well equipped and armed and fully prepared for the battle.

Shoe latchet not broken, indicates that even their footwear will be in very good condition.

But now review this picture in its Tribulation context.

As the Tribulation nears its end, the greater portion of the world will be destroyed.  Starvation will be rampant around the planet.  The economies of the world will have already collapsed.

And yet, these armies, from all over the world will be well equipped, and motivated in their hate of Israel, so much so that they will kill each other off in their attempt to destroy Israel.  Their modes of transportation will still be intact.

As the world has been dying literally, and starving and suffering under the most horrific conditions, the governments of the world will be maintaining their armies and building them up, as the greater masses suffer.

All priorities will be focused on the destruction of Israel, not on rebuilding, not on God, not on truth, no on any form of recovery plan for business or jobs or agriculture or anything else except for escalating all efforts toward the last great battle of history.

The remainder of this chapter describes the condition of those armies.

Isaiah 5:26

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:26

26 And he will lift up [nasa'] an ensign [nec] to the nations [gowy] from far, [rachowq] and will hiss [sharaq] unto them from the end [qatseh] of the earth: ['erets] and, behold, they shall come [bow'] with speed [maherah] swiftly: [qal]  KJV-Interlinear

26 He will also lift up a standard to the distant nation, And will whistle for it from the ends of the earth; And behold, it will come with speed swiftly. NASB

The ensign or standard, is a flag representing the colors of the army unit.  When it is seen or hoisted, that was a signal to rally around the flag and follow those colors into battle or wherever they might lead you.

The hiss, comes from Isa. 7:18, wherein the Lord will call or whistle or blow a flute or some instrument, and those who hear, will come to its call.  In the ancient world, bees were called out of their hives into the fields and back to the hives, with flute like calls.

And so it is used here to demonstrate that the Lord controls history, not man.  He uses His power and intellect and plan, and ability and so forth, to call forth the nations from the far distant places, to rally and come to participate in the destruction being executed.

In this case, Judah was the target of Gods judgment.

This principle teaches how God controls history by means of the use of peoples and nations when they pursue their own agendas regardless of whether they are righteous or not.

God can use evil to rise up against evil, or evil to rise up against righteous, or righteous to rise up against evil, and these combinations have occurred over and over, again and again throughout history.  Peoples have risen up to combat people, but God in all of His wisdom, knew about these conflicts in eternity past, long before they were to occur.

And while these situations did occur in the history of Israel and Judah, their enemies did not come from the far reaches of the world.  That truth will not occur until the end of history in the Tribulation, as well as at the very end of the Millennium.  Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and even Rome may have been considered the ends of the earth in that time, but the real ends of the earth will not become operational until the final days of history.

In the Tribulation, the world will be filled with evil and evil will rise up against evil and destroy itself.

At the end of the Millennium evil will rise up against the righteous and evil will be destroyed.

At the end of our dispensation, the Church Age, evil will rise up in a great apostasy from the far reaches of the world, and God will remove the righteous in the Rapture, leaving the evil to its own devices.  And even out of that pit, many will rise up and believe in Christ and some will survive the worldwide destructive forces until the Second Advent.

The point here is, that even when people, or organizations, or political parties, or nations, or empires seem to have their own agenda, it is really God who is Jesus Christ, that is in control of their inevitable actions.

Man does not control his own destiny.  Man cannot cause his own birth, cannot time his own death, and cannot control his afterlife once he is gone from this world.

Isaiah 5:25

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:25

25 Therefore is the anger ['aph] of the LORD [Yahovah] kindled [charah] against his people, [`am] and he hath stretched forth [natah] his hand [yad] against them, and hath smitten [nakah] them: and the hills [har] did tremble, [ragaz] and their carcases [nabelah] were torn [cuwchah] in the midst [qereb] of the streets. [chuwts] For all this his anger ['aph] is not turned away, [shuwb] but his hand [yad] is stretched out [natah] still. KJV-Interlinear

25 On this account the anger of the Lord has burned against His people, And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them down, And the mountains quaked; and their corpses lay like refuse in the middle of the streets., For all this His anger is not spent,, But His hand is still stretched out. NASB

The word for anger is language of accommodation.  God does not really get angry, but He does raise the level of judgment or justice, or discipline to the appropriate levels for dealing with sin and evil.

Anger indicates a heightened level of the application of justice against evil folks.

Stretching forth his hand, indicates the direction or the target of that justice.

The word for smitten or struck, indicates the actual execution of the action of that justice.

The hills trembling, indicates the presence of God, in all of His majesty and power, causing trembling, and fear, and such in those, who He stands before.

Corpses like refuse, is the result of Gods judgment.  There is no question as to the outcome on the battlefield.  The dead are torn apart, tossed about like garbage, scattered like filth discarded in the streets.

And despite the horrible judgments being received, there is still more to come.

Sometimes God executes judgments that are severe, and then more judgments follow.  Death can be followed by disease, or starvation, or the horrors of becoming a prisoner, for those who survive the initial onslaught of Gods wrath.

Needless to say, for those who are already dead, this earthly ongoing of judgments, has no affect. They are already removed from life and face whatever is applicable to them after death, be it heaven or Torments.

When the Tribulation period of history begins, then that horror will continue for the entire seven years as nearly the entire worlds population will die sooner or later as a result of Gods judgments.

Only when there is nobody remaining to judge, will the course of Gods justice be complete.

Isaiah 5:24

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:24

24 Therefore as the fire ['esh] devoureth ['akal] the stubble, [qash] and the flame [lashown] [lehabah] consumeth [raphah] the chaff, [chashash] so their root [sheresh] shall be as rottenness, [maq] and their blossom [perach] shall go up [`alah] as dust: ['abaq] because they have cast away [ma'ac] the law [towrah] of the LORD [Yahovah] of hosts, [tsaba'] and despised [na'ats] the word ['imrah] of the Holy One [qadowsh] of Israel. [Yisra'el] KJV-Interlinear

24 Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble, And dry grass collapses into the flame,, So their root will become like rot and their blossom blow away as dust;, For they have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts, And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. NASB

Judgments are pronounced.  Judgments are often the repercussions of ones thoughts or actions.  And just as many things are naturally occurring events that follow some given action, so too, judgments are naturally occurring events that follow evil.

Only in the case of reality, judgments always come from God, however God may choose to executes various judgments in many ways.

Jesus Christ controls history.  Jesus Christ controls history in three general ways.

First, He can control history directly.  He created the universe.  He creates life.

Second, He can control history indirectly.  He can control history through the application of divine establishment principles or natural laws, such as economics, or physics, or gravity, or authority and so forth.

Third, He can control history through His permissive will.  In other words, God can grant permission for various thoughts or actions to occur.  Evil can rise up and combat evil.  People can elect the candidate of their choice.  People can adopt norms and standards that they will live by, and so forth.

But in every instance, Christ controls the total flow, direction, and outcome of history.  And He did this beginning in eternity past when the divine decrees were issued.

God looked forward, down through the tunnel of time, and saw all of the possible outcomes and ramifications of every possible scenario in history.  He selected the one and only best possible timeline that best meets everyone's needs, always resulting in the best outcome for history.

When people reject truth, then there is a natural order of results.  And that is of course judgment or discipline.

As these past few verses have unfolded, we have seen that any and all rejection of truth, parallels the actions of drunkenness, arrogance, boasting and so forth.

While actual physical drunkenness has a natural disorganization of ones mind and body and life, then so too, rejection of truth will cause ones spiritual life to fall into pieces.  Drunkenness is the real life representation of spiritual disorientation.

The fire, represents the typical tongue like appearance of the flames of a fire as it flickers in the dark.

Devour, means to eat or consume, or to remove from existence.

Chaff is typically the dried grass or stubble of a field, that when lit on fire, is consumed with rapid fury.

The dried grass has no production, and its root is rotten and useless for production.  Roots typically refer to the strength for the support and maintenance of a productive plant.  When the roots are worthless, then the plant by default is worthless.

No plant can survive unless it has strong and productive roots.  No spiritual life can survive unless the individual has a strong foundation in the fundamental principles of doctrine.  No doctrine no roots, no roots then no functional spiritual life.  No functional spiritual life, then faith is empty and impotent.

The blossom refers to the beauty or the productive aspects of the plant.  And so the illustration continues with the absence of a root, and therefore there is an absence of beauty and productivity.

The law, or the fundamentals or principles, and the word, or the content of the scriptures or truth, having been ignored, compromised, rejected, and otherwise banned in ones life, become the basis for the destruction, the self-destruction of ones own life.

When you reject doctrine, then you pronounce on yourself, your own sentence of destruction.

Isaiah 5:23

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:23

23 Which justify [tsadaq] the wicked [rasha`] for [`eqeb] reward, [shachad] and take away [cuwr] the righteousness [tsadaqah] of the righteous [tsaddiyq] from him! KJV-Interlinear

23 Who justify the wicked for a bribe, And take away the rights of the ones who are in the right!  NASB

Bias in justice has long been a problem in legal matters.  Corrupt judges who take bribes, or who are easily influenced or easily pressured, or who favor their own gain over the rights of those in the right, have long been a problem for society.

But this evil characteristic is not limited to judges.  It can apply to legislators, government officials, business people, people in any organization, and certainly this principle of corruption can apply to the common person on the street.

Gossip is an example of this application of evil bias.

But then all evil principles are driven by the absence of truth.

Without truth, which is the sum total and result of understanding Bible doctrine, there are no boundaries with which to contain ones morals or standards.

All correct standards of life originate from truth.  And if you do not have any boundaries, then you cannot know when you are out of bounds. And certainly you do not care.

When the sin nature drives the life, then the lusts become insatiable and want more and more, and sooner or later, the innocent, and certainly those in the right, will lose out to those who possess the power and authority to do as they please.

The only constraint on evil is truth.  And the only way to manage evil is to have a majority guided by truth, such that it can manage, control and contain evil.  That is usually the job of the legal system, or the military as in the case of conflicts between countries or regions and so forth.

But then again, this also applies to individual people, for it is people who make up the structures of bureaucracies or organizations or such things that usually hide behind the veil of their organization.

Isaiah 5:22

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:22

22 Woe [howy] unto them that are mighty [gibbowr] to drink [shathah] wine, [yayin] and men ['enowsh] of strength [chayil] to mingle [macak] strong drink: [shekar] KJV-Interlinear

22 Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine, And valiant men in mixing strong drink;  NASB

Verse eleven defined those who drink all day out of habit, while disregarding their normal daily obligations of life.

Here, the drinking takes on a different attitude, that which is one of boasting about being above or better than the intoxication effects of alcohol or drugs.

Drinking refers to alcoholic beverages, and to mingle with strong drink means to do that which is necessary to make the drinks even stronger than normal, but mixing other things such as drugs that have a narcotic affect, or even stronger versions of alcoholic beverages are all meant to lead to higher highs or more elevated adventures as perceived by the individual.

Mighty and strength both refer to the warrior self-image of the drinker, and the army or force to be reckoned with as the drinker sees himself.

Arrogance sends the person off into a realm of invincibility as well as legitimizing any excuses they might have for never being wrong, justifying their actions and behavior.

This is the ultimate mockery against authority, against respect, against society’s moral standards.

Confidence and bravery are found in boasting over ones ability to consume, to defeat the intoxicating affects, to be better than drugs and alcohol.  It is a boasting in vanity of one detached from reality.

‘I can handle it.  I can control it.   It does not affect me.  It makes me better.  It helps calm my nerves.  It does not hurt anyone.’

And so the reasons and excuses and rational go.

And this is a woe, because of its disastrous results.  Deviations from truth are the same as deviations from being sober.  Drug addiction and drunkenness are separations or escapes from reality.  Negative volition toward Bible doctrine is likewise a separation or escape from reality.

Drunkenness affects the here and now and is the worldly example of a dysfunctional life.  Spiritual separation affects all of eternity and is far, far worse and is the reality of a dysfunctional life.

In drunkenness life's priorities are upside down, life's courage is misplaced, life's values are distorted, and ones life is in a sorry state.  And worst of all, the person does not care, and does not acknowledge their error.

They reject reality and replace it with their own version of truth.

Isaiah 5:21

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:21

21 Woe [howy] unto them that are wise [chakam] in their own eyes, [`ayin] and prudent [biyn] in their own sight [paniym]! KJV-Interlinear

21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, And clever in their own sight! NASB

This is the third woe and the fifth transgression specified in this chapter.

Human wisdom and prudence, are self-assumptions of facts and realities that do not exist.

Wise in ones own eyes means being inflated with false opinions or beliefs, based not on truth, but on ones own knowledge, regardless of where it comes from, and demonstrating a self confidence in those opinions even when they are false.

This can be easily demonstrated with the example of kids and foods. They look as something and decide immediately if they like it or not.  It may be the package, or the look of the food, but their decision is based solely on an opinion that lacks any knowledge or evidence, or even testing the food.

They like or dislike, without proofs of any kind, which could easily be changed with an empirical approach, which is simply tasting the food, with objectivity of course, and then deciding.

As people get older, then even empirical approaches can get twisted.  Monkeys have arms and legs, therefore the interpretation is that they are basketball players.   Right?

I josh of course, but evolution takes facts and then misinterprets them into wrong conclusions.  Likewise, government takes socialism and makes it out to be other than what it really is, a disaster.  And the general public will believe the lies.

Anytime, opinions deviate from divine establishment principles, then they are false principles.  Anytime spiritual criteria deviates from doctrine, it is false.  Anytime analysis deviates from objectivity, it is false.

When people do not possess doctrine in their soul, then they do not have the basis or foundation for being able to orient to self, to life, to God, to reality, and so forth.

Doctrine is the prerequisite for being able to figure out and to understand life and all that is in it.

Without doctrine, you are limited to understanding anything and everything, and that limit will fail you sooner or later.  And that failure, is the woe, of this verse.

Wrong conclusions lead to misunderstanding and wrong decisions, and eventually great loss and disaster.

Isaiah 5:20

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:20

20 Woe [howy] unto them that call ['amar] evil [ra`] good, [towb] and good [towb] evil; [ra`] that put [suwm] darkness [choshek] for light, ['owr] and light ['owr] for darkness; [choshek] that put [suwm] bitter [mar] for sweet, [mathowq] and sweet [mathowq] for bitter [mar]! KJV-Interlinear

20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;, Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;, Who substitute bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!  NASB

The second ‘woe’ in this passage addresses the reverse views that people pursue when they reject or ignore doctrine.

Bible doctrine is truth, but it is more than just truth, it is the doorway which you may pass through in order to gain access to truth.

Without doctrine you have no access to truth.  God is truth and without access to God, then truth eludes you.

Truth is often referred to as light, with darkness being the absence of light, or total darkness.

Good is that which is decent, moral, acceptable, respectable, upright, noble, virtuous and so forth.

Evil is the opposite of good, being the immoral, the disrespectable, and so forth.

Bitter and sweet are also two opposites, with good or light being the sweet and pleasant, and sin being the bitter or disgusting or objectionable.

So, truth is that which allows us to see life clearly and you know where you are relative to everything else, or at least you have the ability to figure things out.  You can see in the light, which should be obvious.

Darkness is the total absence of light, and in total darkness you cannot see anything.  But more than that, you cannot even know where you are with respect to anything else. You have no orientation to self, to others, to life and especially to God.

When a person is indifferent toward God, toward doctrine, toward all that has been God designed for reality, then they live in a world of disorientation.  This is not limited to criminals or people who you most generally think of as bad, but includes a lot of righteous types that believe that they can cruise through life on their own merit and have no need for God, or even Gods methods or requirements.

So, when truth is not in the soul, then the lies take over.  Realities do a flip flop and everything is turned upside down.  They prefer the bitter or the objectionable.  They prefer the lies.  They prefer being lost and do not even consider themselves as being lost. They prefer their own ways as opposed to Gods ways.  The even call their ways, Gods ways.

And therefore we have the second ‘woe’ in this passage.  Why?  Because this will all lead to the most sorrowful miserable, anxiety filled, lustful, empty, unfulfilling life imaginable.  The sad reality of all of this is, that the person probably will not know that they are free falling through life until they hit the bottom.   And that bottom could very well be their death.

God gives us many examples in life to be able to understand how this sort of thing works.  You probably have seen shows on television that have addicts that reject truth and do not believe that they have a problem.  Others attempt to intervene, but that help is rejected.

Well this is a good example of how the spiritual life goes, when truth is rejected, when people refuse to study daily, when people refuse to confess their sins regularly, when people simply do not accept Gods spiritual design.  Then they function just like an addict, only in the spiritual realm, or rather outside of it.

They reject their obligations in life and that leads to a dysfunctional life, a dysfunctional marriage, a dysfunctional family, a dysfunctional job, dysfunctional priorities, and on and on.  And especially a dysfunctional relationship with God.

The little things become important and the important things become a nuisance to them, and that is how lives and marriages and families and careers and jobs all fall apart.

And the worst of it is when these types of people pursue the ridiculous and become belligerent, stubborn, and even violent in their pursuit of the dysfunctional, and refuse to change.  They bring harm to themselves, but they also bring harm to others, and, they don’t care.  They just want their own way, no matter what.  In their mind, you are wrong, they aren’t.

Therefore, ‘woe.’  And that is a very bad repercussion to an empty and messed up spiritual life.
