18 may
be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and
height and depth, NASB
The subject from the
previous verse, is love. Specifically
this love incorporates the details, the principles of doctrine, all of the
values and expectations by which we are all guided in our lives.
These things, doctrine,
are the sum total of what makes up our lives, and of which even the angels are
learning of Gods phenomenal grace and plan.
Even from within this
chapter, these terms which we are included in this verse, have already been
defined.
Christ, which is the
reference to doctrine, or the written word, is to be learned so that you can
learn the breadth, the length, the depth, and height. And this is further explained in the next
verse, so that you may know, understand, possess, the truth of God.
Breadth, ‘platos,’ means
to be spread out flat so all might be easily seen and understood, wide,
broad. And this is a reference to
coverage, the all-inclusive plan and purpose of God. Nothing is left out. Nothing is excluded. Nothing is forgotten. Nothing is overlooked. All of the resources and tools necessary to
accomplish the maintenance of, and the completion of, ones spiritual life, are
contained therein.
Length, ‘mekos,’ means
large, duration, exceedingly great. And
this is in reference to the eternal purpose and plan of God. There was never a time in which His plan was
not in effect. There will never be a time in which God does not control time
and history. Length covers your entire
life, even into eternity. Length is without beginning and without end. Length emphasizes your advancement, growth,
challenges and so forth, throughout your life.
Depth, ‘bathos,’ means profundity,
understanding, perspicacity, extent, mystery, profound, deep. And here it comes to mean the unlimited
resources that God has at His disposal, unlimited resources that God has made
available to each one of us. Glory emphasizes
the abundance, the riches of Gods grace, blessings and more.
Height, ‘hupsos,’ means
elevation, sky, height, dignity, exalted.
And here, it is a reference to the sovereignty of God, the highest
possible position you can attain in spiritual maturity. There is no authority higher, no doctrine of
more importance than Gods word. Height
emphasizes the glorification of God, His plan, your status as a mature
believer.
God, put together such a
thorough, comprehensive, all inclusive plan for your life, that incorporates
everything, no matter how insignificant, no matter how grand, for your entire
life from the moment He created you in His mind in eternity past, until He
brought you into this world, and for the rest of eternity.
What God has made
available to you is so phenomenal, is it beyond the imagination.
When will you wake up,
will you wake up, and discover and pursue and appreciate the life that God has
virtually given into your lap, rather than waking up one day, most probably
after your death, and discovering what
could have been, were it not for a stubborn, indifferent attitude bent on
pursuing your own beliefs that have been based on nothing?
