Psalm 18:14

Psalm 18:14

14 Yea, he sent out [shalach] his arrows, [chets] and scattered [puwts] them; and he shot out [rabab] lightnings, [baraq] and discomfited [hamam] them. KJV-Interlinear

14 And He sent out His arrows, and scattered them, And lightning flashes in abundance, and routed them. NASB

Arrows are the munitions of ancient times. Lightning flashes paint the picture of rapid long range cannon fire.  In abundance, is a description which gives us the symbolism of a huge volume of firepower of rapid never-ending bombardment.

Here is the picture of Gods voluminous firepower, being executed with unending precision and force.

Discomfited, ‘hamam,’ means to impel, to drive, to place into commotion, to cause consternation.

And this verse gives us a picture of God pushing and driving the enemy, causing great confusion and dismay, and trepidation.  Thus scattering the enemy such that they become no longer a recognizable force, but a scattered hodgepodge of individuals in complete confusion and disarray, running with great fear, anxiety, and terror.  Their fight is gone from them, and escape and survival is their only concern, but even that is no longer an option as the enemy drops dead in their tracks in great numbers.

The enemy is not retreating in any sort of orderly manner, but is scattered and running blind, trying to get away from a relentless furious storm that is all around them, and is pounding them with murderous firepower, of which they have no equal, and cannot defend against nor stop.

And again, while this has not yet occurred in history, for it belongs to those horrible final days of history, this verse and the prior verses that we have already studied, point to the ominous results of ignoring God and Christ, and doctrine in your life.

Indifference toward God, is a losing bet.  It will never win, nor even break-even.  It is a total loss of all that you are or have.

These past few verses have painted a picture of a storm, and while most folks simply read through them with little acknowledgement of their purpose, the real principle of all of this is, that history is going to end up this way.  And, all of the opinions, and all of the philosophies, and all of the good intentions, and all of the technology and gadgets that we might have in life are not going to prevent it.

We even have the prophecy of the certainty of the end of the world catastrophe, and even that knowledge will not prevent it, for it is that very knowledge that is being redefined into human viewpoint that will cause that end of the world occurrence.  God does not cause it, man does.
