Ephesians 3:19
19 And [te] to know [ginosko] the love [agape] of Christ,
[Christos] which passeth [huperballo] knowledge, [gnosis] that [hina] ye might be filled [pleroo]
with [eis] all [pas] the fulness [pleroma] of
God. [theos] KJV-Interlinear
19 and
to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up
to all the fulness of God. NASB
To know, ‘ginosko,’ means
to be aware, to perceive, to understand, to be resolved, to be sure, certainty,
to know.
Love, ‘agape,’ is the
word which stands for the content of the scriptures, the principles, the
mandates, the responsibilities, the obligations, orientations to reality and so
forth that are available and expected in life.
Christ refers to truth as
opposed to all other forms of knowledge.
Christ is truth, while all other forms are untruths, lies, falsities and
such.
Surpasses or passes, ‘huperballo,’
means to exceed, to throw beyond the usual mark, to surpass, that which goes
beyond.
Knowledge, ‘gnosis,’ is a
reference to academic knowledge.
Academic knowledge is that which is learned and limited to this physical
universe. Anyone can learn
academically. We all go to school, we
all work, we all have experiences. We
can all look around and see and hear and taste and smell and touch. And these things all teach us the things of this
physical world. We can all use reason or
logic or trial and error in order to figure things out.
But in every case, ‘gnosis,’
is a reference to the things of this world, and not beyond.
The word, ‘epignosis,’ is
typically used to denote spiritual knowledge and generally relates to spiritual
wisdom.
But the word, ‘gnosis,’
is limited in its scope, because it is limited to this universe and not beyond.
Therefore, Gods word,
Bible doctrine, is greater, but not just greater, it is far, far, far greater
than the knowledge of this world, of this universe. Bible doctrine surpasses all human
understanding, surpasses all physical knowledge of every type.
That we might be filled
with the fullness of God.
Fullness, ‘pleroma,’
means completion, contents, copious, supplement. And this completion, in us, of all that God
possesses, comes from learning Bible doctrine.
We have already seen that
the love of God, Bible doctrine, is vast, infinite in all directions, height,
width, depth, breadth. But you note that
in this three dimensional world, here four dimensions are referenced, making
Gods word, so phenomenal that we cannot even begin to comprehend it, and yet it
is all available to us, for our completion, our fullness to overflowing, that
potentially can and will make our lives beyond imagination.
This is the fullness of
God that is available to us, not just some earthly experience or knowledge or
achievement, but a fullness that will be with us forever into eternity.
