Psalm 38:5
5 My wounds [chabbuwrah] stink [ba'ash] and are corrupt [maqaq] because [paniym] of my foolishness ['ivveleth]. KJV-Interlinear
5 My wounds stink and fester because of my
foolishness, ESV
These are not
wounds in the physical sense, because physical wounds will stink and fester
because of infection, or otherwise because they are not treated or taken care
of. These wounds are related to sin. And the stench and filthy corruption
results from foolishness, not from infection.
The word for
foolishness, ivveleth, has a connotation of perverseness due to bad decisions.
However, the wounds
of sin, are closely related to the characteristics of physical wounds that have
not been tended to or treated.
Physical wounds,
when not cared for, will get dirty and that brings and germs, and that leads to
infection.
An infected wound,
again when it is not treated will turn to corruption, and corruption turns to
stench.
That is a definite
sign of gangrene. And again when not treated, means certain death, or at the
very least the loss of the use of the body part that is infected.
The word for
stink, refers to moral offensiveness.
The word for
corrupt, means to vanish or consume away.
Therefore sin,
acts in a similar manner to physical injury. And when sin is not treated, then
the life of the individual, the spiritual life of the individual, disintegrates
into a corruption, that is spiritually offensive, and is no better than the
putridness of meat that has been left out and forgotten.
The obvious moral
principle being taught here, is that if you do not have a spiritual life, then
your life will ultimately stink and rot away.
And the only
medicine and care for that type of wound, is salvation through faith in Christ,
followed by spiritual growth by means of Bible doctrine.
