Psalm 38:3

3 There is no soundness [mathom] in my flesh [basar] because [paniym] of thine anger [za`am]; neither is there any rest [shalowm] in my bones [`etsem] because [paniym] of my sin [chatta'ah].   KJV-Interlinear

3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.   ESV

Soundness refers to wholesomeness. The word for flesh, is a wrapper around the entire body meaning self, or self-skin, or nakedness, and comes to mean the entire person. The word for bones, etsem, is an extended meaning of the body referring to the structure or the substance of oneself. The word for rest, refers to health or peace, prosperity for the wholesomeness and welfare of the individual.

The word for anger, zaam, is a reference to Gods displeasure as to the state of a situation. And in this case the situation is sin or the foundation of transgression of man against God, separating man from God.

And finally the word for sin, chattaah, refers to a habitual offense and its penalty that attaches to it.

Therefore, our essence lacks wholesomeness because we are separated from God because of the sin nature contained within ourselves, and because the sins that we continually commit.

Gods displeasure results from the situation of the sin nature which separates us from God, and in effect prevents a relationship with God through Christ, until the issue of the sin nature, and sin has been addressed.

The sin nature, which originated with Adam and his original sin, put us in a state of un-wholesomeness.

And because we are separated from God, who is truth, then there is no possibility of wholesomeness being a part of our life, or the essence of our existence.

Our health, or the very core of our existence, is totally dependent on a relationship with God through Christ.

Without salvation, we are incomplete and in an unhealthy state.

With salvation, which we acquire through faith in Christ, we have the opportunity of entering into a relationship with God, and therefore obtain a completeness in the health that was not formerly available to us.

With spiritual growth, by learning doctrine and living within the fellowship sphere, then the very core of our existence is enhanced and completed.

Therefore, without salvation we are nothing, and with salvation we have the opportunity to fulfill a completeness within ourselves through doctrine.
