Psalm 39:6

Copyright  2016 J. Neely
Psalm 39:6

6 Surely every man ['iysh] walketh [halak] in a vain shew [tselem]: surely they are disquieted [hamah] in vain [hebel]: he heapeth up [tsabar] riches, and knoweth [yada`] not who shall gather ['acaph] them.   KJV-Interlinear

6 Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! ESV

The complaining continues. The phrase vain shew, means shadow, or something that has an appearance, but has no substance.

And therefore life is compared to a shadow, where a person hustles through life, accumulating the things of this world, perhaps success, perhaps prosperity, perhaps wealth. But, all of that is nothing more than a shadow, or things that have no real substance, as far as eternity is concerned.

And just as a shadow goes away, when the light goes away, so also the things a person accumulates in life, disappear to them, when their light of life comes to an end.

And yet people hustle through life, knowing all the while that life will come to an end, and eternity will begin, and yet they ignore their own preparation for eternity.

And so they accumulate the things of this life and of this world, which things amount to nothing, instead of accumulating spiritual preparation, which is Bible doctrine, which has a value greater than everything in the world combined. And in so doing end up with nothing to show for their life.

And at the end of the person’s life, all that they have from this world, will go to someone else. Your possessions go to family, or perhaps to the government. But where they end up, and perhaps even squandered, the deceased will never know.

And when it all comes down to the end of life, the person who ignores Bible doctrine and their spiritual life, and pursues the things of this world, will have nothing at the end of their life, just as they have nothing during their life.

All things in this world are temporary, and therefore amount to nothing, because they do not continue beyond this life.

Only Bible doctrine in the soul, which means you have to learn it, has intrinsic value, which goes beyond this life, and into all of eternity.

Better to invest in eternal possessions, than in temporary possessions.

Psalm 39:5

Copyright  2016 J. Neely
Psalm 39:5

5 Behold, thou hast made [nathan] my days [yowm] as an handbreadth [tephach]; and mine age [cheled] is as nothing before thee: verily every [kol] man ['adam] at his best state [natsab] is altogether [kol] vanity [hebel]. Selah [celah].   KJV-Interlinear

5 Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah ESV

In the previous verses, the psalmist complains that life is miserable, and wants to know how much longer life will be, for enduring that misery. And in this verse, the psalmist complains that life is too short, that it is meaningless, that it is so brief, making accomplishment virtually impossible.

Complaining, typically contradicts itself. The complainer wants one thing, and then he wants another.

And in this verse, the word for handbreadth, is a reference to the width of the hand, or meaning something that is very small in measurement.

The psalmist complains that his age, meaning his life, is the same as nothing.

And the general reference to man, meaning mankind on the whole, or the entire history of mankind, is likewise, nothing.

The implication is, why doesn’t God give longer lives, so that something can be accomplished.

But on the other hand, life is full of miserable things, one after another. And if a person had a longer life, then they would just have to suffer or endure, many more miserable things.

And besides the very first generations had lifespans of hundreds of years, and all it got them was a flood.

This is the Devils world, and as such, on a good day, the world can offer nothing more than miserable things.

And at some point in everyone’s life, the inconsistencies of complaining, will bubble to the surface, and one can only think that God will smile, upon hearing the flip-flop argument that a person generates by them self, while talking to them self, while complaining to God.

If life is miserable, and offers no meaning or purpose, then isn’t it possible that a person would look to God, and doctrine, and the spiritual life, to discover their real meaning and purpose?

After all, one who is complaining to God, and in effect is speaking to God, then by default recognizes that there is something beyond this life, and therefore something better.  So why not pursue it?

Romans 7:10

10 And [kai] the commandment [entole], which [ho] was ordained to [eis] life [zoe], I [moi] found [heurisko] [houtos] to be unto [eis] death [thanatos].   KJV-Interlinear

10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. ESV

The very commandment, refers to the Mosaic law. Throughout the Old Testament there are many passages which point to the intention of the law in producing life and happiness.

Many passages state that if you keep my statutes and my judgments, then you shall live.

But all of these passages point to man’s incapability of keeping Gods statutes and judgments, and therefore life by them is not an option.

The actual result of this effort, is death.

And that actual result of death is because of man’s incapability of meeting all of the spiritual requirements of a perfect life by means of his own efforts.

And again the emphasis is that the law is not the answer, but the Savior is.

Romans 7:9

Copyright Ó 2016 J. Neely
Romans 7:9

9 For [de] I [ego] was alive [zao] without [choris] the law [nomos] once [pote]: but [de] when the commandment [entole] came [erchomai], sin [hamartia] revived [anazao], and [de] I [ego] died [apothnesko].   KJV-Interlinear

9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. ESV

In the Garden of Eden, man was at peace with God except for one restriction, which was not eating of that single tree. Satan took advantage of that restriction and presented a delusion of being a smart as God.

Eve fell for it, and committed the first sin, and Adam chose for Eve, and committed the second sin. The first delusion was of being smart, the second delusion was for having someone better than God.

And thus all sin is born out of a delusion of some sort, and all delusions are false concepts.

Paul states that there are two aspects with regard to the Mosaic law.

The first is that one is alive without the law, which is a delusion. And the second aspect states that, given the law, the only reality is death, which is a truth, not a delusion.

The Mosaic law describes the perfect life. However, the perfect life is unattainable because man is incapable of keeping all of the rules of perfection. Therefore, living the perfect life is a delusion.

The reality enters into the picture when one realizes that the law makes one aware that life is really centered around sin. And this is true especially when God is not in the picture.

And thus the delusion extends to all religions which promised immortality or equality with God, based on ones own lifestyle, or works, as it were.

And so Paul makes it clear that if you believe you are not bound by the law, which defines life, then you are in a delusion. And when you wake up from that delusion and realize that all you have is sin, then you also realize that all you have is death.

The whole point is, that the remedy for all of this is not the Mosaic law, nor man’s striving to live the perfect life, nor man’s own works, but the remedy is through faith in Christ.

Proverbs 1:21

Copyright  2016 J. Neely
Proverbs 1:21

21 She crieth [qara'] in the chief place [ro'sh] of concourse [hamah], in the openings [pethach] of the gates [sha`ar]: in the city [`iyr] she uttereth ['amar] her words ['emer], saying,   KJV-Interlinear

21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: ESV

Two types of believers exist in Christianity. The first, say that they want wisdom, but are in fact, indifferent, not lifting a finger to seek out instruction, and therefore learn nothing. It is they who will be the big losers in life.

The second type, is a much smaller group of Christians, who strongly desire to learn, and actually make an effort to seek out instruction in Bible doctrine. It is they who will be the big winners in life.

The word of truth, cries out in all public places. Truth saturates the universe, and makes itself known, in one way or another, to everyone.

The chief places of concourse, described the head of a roadway complex, or the head of a river complex, such as was described in Genesis 2, where the word for chief place, was used to refer to the point at which the four streams branched off.

Bible doctrine, or truth, positions is self at the beginning of everything in life. It carries itself through the course of life, down every road, down every river, everywhere that people are.

It is impossible to live in this world, and not see truth, or Bible doctrine.

The city gates, represent the public places where business and commerce are conducted, and where courts of justice, and legal transactions are conducted.

In one way or another, truth enters in and touches everyone’s life.

And how, anyone can live their life, and ignore or remain indifferent toward truth, and learn absolutely nothing, is almost beyond comprehension.

And yet the greater portion of society remains indifferent, and lazy, and simply will not pursue the learning of truth, which is the building material in the construction of ones soul.

No material, means no construction. No construction, means no completion. And that is the sad state of the soul of the individual, especially those who talk the talk, but in fact do nothing.
