Isaiah 5:8
8 Woe [howy] unto them that join [naga`] house [bayith] to house, [bayith] that lay [qarab] field [sadeh] to field, [sadeh] till
there be no ['ephec] place, [maqowm] that they may be placed [yashab] alone in the midst [qereb]
of the earth ['erets]! KJV-Interlinear
8 Woe
to those who add house to house and join field to field,, Until there is no
more room,, So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land! NASB
The first of the crimes
of people is avarice, which is greed, materialism, covetousness, acquisition lust
and so forth. These are all things that
are non-spiritual by their nature. This
includes false spirituality as well as any invented philosophy or religion, or
the desire to approach God on your terms, not His. But most greed is directed at things or
pleasures or status and so forth.
To join house to house,
is a reference to the acquisition of many homes or parcels of real-estate, to
make bigger, as in cities or metropolis areas.
This is a reference to the arrogance and pride of humanity in making or
having more, and/or bigger and/or better.
Homes are also where you live within your soul, or the pattern of life
you choose for yourself. That too is
your home.
To lay field to field,
means to join larger parcels of real-estate, to cause to approach, to bring
together into ones possession or view of the eye. The pride of wealth, or
desire, or more. The greater focus of
your entire life.
Until there be no more
place, means simply until you have it all, or the ultimate greed or ownership
or control. To be the master of the realm, so to speak. Until your mind and soul are completely
absorbed in the greed, leaving no room for God.
To be placed alone, means
until you have driven all others out and you have it all with no one else
having anything. And in this case too,
until you have driven God completely out of your life.
These terms can be used
for individual greed or bureaucratic greed.
In the midst of the
earth, means all that is in the world, for the individual or organization
cannot control anything that is outside of this world. The spiritual world is inaccessible from the
physical world.
These terms are not
restricted to only real-estate, but apply to anything that you might consider
as collectible or desirable. Just the
mere fact that you want something as the solution to your objective of
happiness or fulfillment in life, classifies you as avarice in your pattern of
life.
And while this characteristic
can apply to anyone in history, there will come a time at the end of history,
when society worldwide on the whole, will be like this. And that will be the time of the most
ruthless and horrific period in all of human history.
