Psalm 18:5
5 The sorrows [chebel] of hell [sha'owl] compassed me about: [cabab]
the snares [mowqesh] of death [maveth] prevented [qadam] me. KJV-Interlinear

cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. NASB
The extremes of anxiety are
being expressed here.
As in the previous verse,
sorrows or cords, ‘chebel,’ mean rope, twisted, bindings.
Snares, ‘mowqesh,’ mean
noose or nets such as in hunting nets, which are thrown over and around the
prey so as to render it helpless and prevent movement. This assures the kill of the prey which of
course means certain death.
So, cords or sorrows of
death seized upon the individual as well as the bindings of the circumstances
that give no room for maneuvering or movement, thus placing the individual in a
difficult and helpless place with no way out.
The picture is one of
hopelessness and the overwhelming sorrow and anxiety that overpowers and
overcomes the person.
Sooner or later in every
persons life, they are faced with this situation. Whether during the life when various circumstances
place huge obstacles before you, or whether late in ones life, when old age and
the nearness of death approach, makes no difference.
The timing and the
circumstances are irrelevant. The fact of
the confrontation of death, is relevant.
And that brings the person face to face with just how they are going to
handle it.
With God and doctrine,
you can handle death and all situations in life, just fine. Without God and lacking doctrine, then your
face to face confrontation with death will prove your weakness and ultimate
terror content of your soul.
