Ephesians 3:1

1  For this [toutou] cause [charin] I [ego] Paul, [Paulos] the prisoner [desmios] of Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos] for [huper] you [humon] Gentiles, [ethnos] KJV-Interlinear

1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles  NASB

For this reason, which means, because the gospel and doctrine belong to all people, and because the Jews and priests of the ages prior to Christ, had tried to limit access to doctrine to only their own, preventing outsiders, or non-Jews, from having Gods word, then Paul, was called to minister principally to the gentiles, so that they would all have access to God, through Christ and doctrine.

A prisoner, is a term that refers to Pauls total commitment to his calling.  He was not a prisoner by crime and court sentencing, but a prisoner through his own voluntary commitment and dedication to Christ.

And Pauls calling was dedicated to the gentiles, or those peoples that were scattered around the world, and were not of Jewish descent or ancestry.

The Jews were given custody of the scriptures, in order to evangelize the world.  They did not.

The Apostles were given custody and a mandate to evangelize all peoples, which they did.

Paul was given the mission of writing the bulk of the New Testament, which has been distributed to the entire world, to all peoples, excluding none.  Now there is no one person or group, or nation being held responsible for the dissemination of the Word of God, but it is freely distributed by virtually all cultures, nations, peoples and so forth.
