Psalm 16:7
7 I will bless [barak] the LORD, [Yahovah] who hath given me counsel: [ya`ats] my reins [kilyah] also
instruct [yacar] me in the night seasons. [layil] KJV-Interlinear
7 I
will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the
night. NASB
As a result of the
phenomenal gifts that God has made available to us, appreciation and gratitude
are among the very least that we can express toward God.
Counsel is the advice of
God. The advice of God comes from His communication of truth to us. God does
not speak directly to us, does not communicate to us in dreams or visions or
signs. God has written His communication to us, and that communication is found
in the scriptures.
We have phenomenal
blessings because of advancement to spiritual maturity. There is no other
source of blessing, nor target, other than from God to mature believers.
All believers receive
blessings, but mature believers receive infinitely more, and infinitely greater
rewards, an extra share, if you will.
Reins, 'kilyah,' refer to
the kidneys. The kidneys are a filtration aspect of the human body. It filters
out the bad, or sorts out the good from the bad. In Hebrew tradition, the reins
represent the seat of the emotions within the interior self, not an outward
expression but an internal feeling or pondering, or reflection, or evaluation
of what it is that you have learned and/or know.
Instruction, is used in
this context to reflect on, or review what you have learned.
In the night, is the
period of relaxation, of sleep, or quiet and privacy.
Therefore, during your
private time alone when you have a moment of an extended period away from the
hustle and bustle of life, then you have time to reflect on everything around
you, on God, on your potential destiny, on your potential reward, or the
blessings that are already determined for you.
You study the Bible daily
in order to learn and grow. But your study does not end when class ends. You
now have the opportunity to reflect on what you have learned. You have an
opportunity to look back on your life's experiences and recognize what God has done
for you, especially since you have not thought about that aspect of your life.
You do not earn who or
what you are. You do not deserve who or what you are. These things are gifts
from God, right down to the least of the genetics within your physical self to
everything you possess.
And from within your own
private emotions, you should appreciate and be grateful for all of that and
more.
