Isaiah 3:8
8 For Jerusalem [Yaruwshalaim] is
ruined, [kashal] and Judah [Yahuwdah] is fallen: [naphal] because
their tongue [lashown] and their doings [ma`alal] are against the LORD, [Yahovah] to provoke [marah] the eyes
[`ayin] of his glory. [kabowd] KJV-Interlinear
8 For
Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, Because their speech and their
actions are against the Lord, To rebel against His glorious presence. NASB
Both historically and spiritually,
this verse as with many of the passages in the Bible, carry contemporary,
personal, and prophetic applications.
Contemporary applies to
Isaiah’s day. Personally, applies to
each and every believer throughout history, which includes you and me.
Prophetically applies to the future and final days of human history, during the
period commonly known as the Tribulation, or the ‘last days.’
Jerusalem and Judah are actual
geographical areas. Jerusalem is the
city and Judah is the nation.
However, they also
represent the nation of believers, or family of God, for whom doctrine and the
spiritual life have been made available.
The nation of Judah
symbolized the entire family of believers.
The city of Jerusalem means the city of peace and represents spiritually
mature believers. Zion, not mentioned
here, is the mountain that exists within the city of Jerusalem and represents
the dwelling of God, or Bible doctrine.
The writer here gives the
reason of the collapse of society, previously mentioned in the prior verses. And that is namely that they have turned away
from truth. They have turned away from
the study of the scriptures. When the
capital collapses, then the nation collapses.
When the world lacks mature believers, then even believers in general,
fail in their spiritual lives.
Historically the city and
the nation turned away from God and thus were overrun by their enemies.
Personally, when you turn
away from the legitimate spiritual life, even if you try to substitute
something else, your life will become miserable. Doctrine is truth, rejecting truth means
pursuing lies. Lies are not reality and
always end in disaster.
When the Tribulation
begins, then all of society even throughout the entire world, will be in the
same boat, spiritually empty and riding the horrendous disasters that will
ensue throughout that entire seven year period.
Their trouble is of their
own making. All trouble in everyone's life,
is due not to God, but to their (your) own indifference, due to disrespect, due
to arrogance, due to a turning away from God.
Gods attention must be
obtained in accordance with His rules, not yours.
To provoke the eyes of His
glory, is an expression for God initiating discipline and/or judgment. His glory is truth and more, and judgment is
the application of His justice against all that is in opposition to truth.
