Isaiah 3:9

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 3:9

9 The shew [hakkarah] of their countenance [paniym] doth witness against them; [`anah] and they declare [nagad] their sin [chatta'ah] as Sodom, [Cadom] they hide [kachad] it not. Woe ['owy] unto their soul [nephesh]! for they have rewarded [gamal] evil [ra`] unto themselves.  KJV-Interlinear

9 The expression of their faces bears witness against them. And they display their sin like Sodom; They do not even conceal it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves.  NASB

When people reject truth, is becomes a reflection off of their very faces.  Their sins are obvious.  Their attitude is not hidden from public view.  Their faces demonstrate their countenance, their expressions demonstrate their pride, their ego, their smugness, their arrogance, their impudence.

Witness against them, is a reference to the expression of the face, the outward look, as it correlates to the content of their soul.  Their soul is degenerate, and therefore their outward appearance and actions reflect that content.  What the spiritually dysfunctional, the spiritually destitute soul portrays, is nothing short of evil.

As Sodom, means that in Sodom all sin was public and not hidden from anyone.  And so it is with all evil people.

Sooner or later as the evil consumes the soul, then their morals, their integrity, their attitude, their conscience all come to the surface and they care nothing about what they think, or say, or do, and they care nothing of what others see or think of them.  They do not even attempt to hide their true thoughts or opinions.  Their attitude is open and bold.

Woe to their soul, means they bring woe upon themselves.

They have rewarded evil, means that whatever punishment they receive, they have done it to themselves.  They have no excuses, no one to blame.

Evil visits evil.  Perpetual judgment is the reward of perpetual evil.

Nothing good ever comes out of evil.  Nothing positive ever comes out of evil.  If you choose to reside outside of truth and inside of evil, then you are your own worst enemy.  You destroy yourself.  Like a cancer, evil consumes its host.
