Isaiah 2:9
9 And the mean man ['adam] boweth down, [shachach] and
the great man ['iysh] humbleth [shaphel] himself: therefore forgive [nasa'] them not. KJV-Interlinear
9 So
the common man has been humbled, And the man of importance has been abased, But
do not forgive them. NASB
The mean or common man, ‘adam,’
or ‘aadaam,’ is a reference to stature or rank in society, referring to the
lowest of ranks, as in those who live as peasants or in poverty, the very
destitute of peoples.
The great or important, ‘iysh,’
refers to the greatest of the greats.
Those who are of high ranking, the wealthy, the highest of offices as in
royalty, or celebrityship, or people of high honor or privilege.
Together, both of these
terms refers to all peoples in all ranks of society, leaving no one out,
excluding no one, including everyone.
And so, evil or
wickedness reaches out its arm to entrap anyone and everyone. No one is exempt from its traps or influence.
Certainly ones status is not a defense against evil.
The rich and high and
mighty can be entrapped just as easily as the poor. The poor can be entrapped just as easily as
the high and mighty.
All people are comprised of
dust (biology). No sample of dust is
better than any other sample of dust. No
dust can say that it is any better than any other dust.
All people are comprised
of a living soul. The soul comes from
God and the human life contained within that soul comes from God as well. The human soul has phenomenal
capabilities. The human biology has
phenomenal limitations. The evidence of
this is in the many aspects of human capability that we can witness in this world.
Some folks possess
phenomenal capabilities, others possess not so good capabilities. The common
barrier in all, is the human brain and body (genetics) which imposes various levels
of limitations on human ability.
One day, the human body
will be replaced with a resurrection body (your soul will not be replaced with
a better soul) and that will eliminate those human physical and mental
limitations.
But for now, all manner
of society is susceptible to evil and its influences. And especially everyone who ignores or
rejects truth on a day to day basis.
Again, in the future all
believers will be living in heaven and will possess the indwelling of all
members of the Trinity, and that, together with the elimination of evil (all
gone to the Lake of Fire), will give each one of us a huge advantage in being
able to maintain truth as the focus of our eternal lives.
But for now, we all have
human limitations. We are all susceptible
to evil and wickedness. No one is exempt.
And here, Isaiah gives
firm warning, that no one, who accepts evil as their way and pattern of life, will
be let off the hook for their choices and decisions and actions in life.
The word for forgive, ‘nasa,’
has a wide variety of meanings and here forgiveness means to look away as
though nothing ever happened, to not hold accountable, to not punish and so
forth. And so that it is very clear,
every person is going to be held accountable and punished as is appropriate for
them.
God holds no
favorites. God will not treat anyone
with bias, but will treat the low as well as the high, with equal deference,
and justice. Neither the low nor the
high will have an advantage or a disadvantage when it comes time for divine
discipline or judgment. All will be held
accountable.
