2 Timothy 3:5
5 Having [echo] a form [morphosis] of godliness, [eusebeia]
but [de] denying [arneomai] the power [dunamis]
thereof: [autos] from [kai] such [toutous] turn away. [apotrepo] KJV-Interlinear
5 holding
to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; and avoid such men
as these. NASB
Form, ‘morphosis,’
means the outer shape as in a shadow or silhouette.
The shadow form of a
house or tree is not the real thing, but only gives the appearance of the
object.
The shadow is empty, and
has no content or substance.
Remember that we are
talking about believers, or more correctly, the massive breakdown in the spiritual
lives of believers in the latter portion of this Church Age.
And as dysfunctional
believers are an imitation of unbelievers, then we can conclude correctly that
the unbelieving world is living this wicked pattern as well. Thus the entire world will be one big spiritually
dysfunctional population of humanity.
Even those who profess
the Christian life, will in fact be phony false leaders and participants of
Christianity.
Their form of godliness
will be nothing more than an ambiguous outline of Christianity, totally without
the substance of truth. And in lacking
the substance of truth, their message and beliefs will be in opposition to true
Biblical principles. Thus eternal life
will be modified to be something less than that. Eternal security will be something less than
that. Salvation by faith will be changed to salvation by works, and so forth.
And thus, denying the
power, therefore means rejecting the accurate understanding and application of
the content of the scriptures.
For those who do not
participate in a daily study of the Word, such false beliefs will be difficult
if not impossible to discern. And thus
many will be led astray into the oblivion of evil.
Only for those who
pursue their daily instruction, will there be a clear understanding of those
false attempts to derail ones life.
