Isaiah 2:8

Copyright Ó 2011 J. Neely
Isaiah 2:8

8 Their land ['erets] also is full [male'] of idols; ['eliyl] they worship [shachah] the work [ma`aseh] of their own hands, [yad] that which their own fingers ['etsba`] have made: [`asah]KJV-Interlinear

8 Their land has also been filled with idols; They worship the work of their hands, That which their fingers have made. NASB

Idols of this world, are nothing more than obsessions, heroes, stars, pin-ups, favorite things, things to which one looks for objectives, meaning and purpose and hope.  And unfortunately, all of these things are useless and nonsensical.

Whether you are bowing down to a fat man idol, or to the idol of prosperity and wealth, or to your idol or focus of your social life, or to your wants and whims and desires of life, they are all pointless and false objectives or targets.

The hands, is a reference to the work of your own self, of your own imagination, of your own invented beliefs.

Fingers, is a reference symbolically, to the details with which you pursue your own dreams, or day dreams, or lusts and desires of your heart.

And all of these things are false and void of substance and results.

When you ignore God, then you have only one other thing to focus on in life.  When you spend only part of your time on God, in any fashion, you still fill out the rest of your time seeking the details of life, things of this world.

There are only two spheres or environments in which you can live your life, and the first is the worldliness of the world, and the second is the spirituality of the Godly life.

The first is rather obvious.  It consists of everything that you can detect with your senses, see, smell, taste, hear, touch and so forth.

The Godly life is supernatural and beyond the senses, but it is certainly more easy to function from within, than the world.  You only have to be saved, first of all, and that is attained through faith in Christ, and the second part of the spiritual life is fellowship, by which you obtain through confession of your sins.  So you can see, it is not really a complicated matter.

In short we simply call these two spheres the carnal sphere or the spiritual sphere.

All unbelievers live their lives perpetually in the carnal sphere.

Only believers can live in the spiritual sphere, but unfortunately most believers commit sins, do not confess them and thus live their lives in the carnal sphere as well.

And so in carnality, you are surrounded by the influences of the world, and you, not being influenced by the spiritual side of life, will be led into the false world of the carnal world.

Whether you are a good person or not, is irrelevant.  The sphere in which you live your life, is relevant, and determines your course and destiny in life.
