2 Timothy 1:16
16 The Lord [kurios] give [didomi] mercy [eleos] unto the house [oikos] of Onesiphorus; [Onesiphoros] for [hoti] he [anapsucho] oft [pollakis] refreshed [anapsucho] me, [me] and [kai] was [epaischunomai] not [ou] ashamed [epaischunomai] of my [mou] chain: [halusis] KJV-Interlinear
16 The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chains; NASB
In contrast to the previous verse, the name, Onesiphoros, means ‘bringing advantage, beneficial.’
When believers who are positive toward God, Christ, doctrine and their spiritual life, then there becomes a mutual benefit for both parties in a relationship.
This is not because of the persons involved, but because of the doctrine resident in their souls.
God is truth. Truth is blessed by God. Anyone who pursues lies can expect no blessing from God.
God is the only source for real and lasting (eternal) blessing. The world has blessing that is false and deceitful, and temporary at best.
Blessing from God is intrinsic, and carries with it a synergistic characteristic, meaning that the results are greater than the sum of the input. That is, two plus two equals a total that is far greater than four.
For example, when a person believes in Christ, his salvation results in eternal life, which is a duration that is unlimited. It is not for just this life, or for some shorter period, but the results are infinite.
Believers helped Paul and in turn received blessing, not because of their actions, but because what they did was right, and in line with Gods policy and plan.
Believers who hold out because they judge the value of their willingness, or who will not do things without strings attached, or who will not do things unless they deem the benefit worthy of their effort, come into a relationship with their own rules, not Gods, and thus the blessings due to them will never exist. Circumstances determine their effort, not truth or that which is right.
When push comes to shove they fade just like the people of the previous verse.
Those who have true humility and charity, and do not come with pre-conditions or judgments. Thus they are not embarrassed, not ashamed.
True friends are supportive, and never ashamed of their choice in friends. Friendship is a mental attitude, not a status arrangement.
