2 Timothy 1:13

13 Hold fast [echo] the form [hupotuposis] of sound [hugiaino] words, [logos] which [hos] thou hast heard [akouo] of [para] me, [emou] in [en] faith [pistis] and [kai] love [agape] which [ho] is in [en] Christ [Christos] Jesus. [Iesous] KJV-Interlinear

13 Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. NASB

Unfortunately in our current day, there are far too many beliefs, churches, religions and so forth that promote themselves as legitimate, but in fact are founded on imagined or invented doctrines that are anti-biblical.  Most of the beliefs are designed to entertain or entice followers with promises that lack substance in reality, but lure followers with some form of magic or implied benefit.

But in Christianity there is only one standard, which is the written word.

Standard, ‘hupotuposis,’ is the artists outline or sketch, within which the finished painting is accomplished.  Doctrine, sound words, is the framework, within which the believers spiritual life is completed.

You cannot complete a thing within your soul unless you first build a framework.  You cannot construct a house, unless you first build the framework.  And the framework of the soul is doctrine.

You must learn it through study, first.  But even before that, you have to want to learn.

Folks with preconceived ideas, or who have predisposed beliefs, or who prefer beliefs that are convenient to their life, are basically unteachable.  And for that person to set aside their beliefs and begin to learn truth, is very difficult.

But Paul gives us fair warning.  Pursue sound doctrine.  And that sound doctrine comes only from the Bible.

From Paul, is a reference to the writers of scripture.

The source of our study comes from the Bible and from no other source.

The references external to the Bible provide historical setting and verification, but are not the origin of truth.

The substance of sound words are found in faith, in love, which are in Christ.

Faith, ‘pistis,’ is a reference to the conviction, the consistency, the system of Christian doctrine.

Love, ‘agape,’ is the reference to the nuts and bolts of the details of doctrine.  The principles, precepts, categorical material and so forth, which are presented in the scriptures.

In Christ, is the ultimate focal point of Christianity.  This truth comes from no other source, from no other religion, from no other belief system, from no invented or imagined structure of this world.

There are not several systems of truth, only one.  And, we are herein mandated to hold fast to that truth, which is doctrine, and of which we can only hold fast if we learn it, which means that we must study it, and before that we must want it.
