Psalm 18:2
2 The LORD [Yahovah] is my rock, [cela`] and my fortress, [matsuwd]
and my deliverer; [palat] my God, ['el] my strength, [tsuwr] in
whom I will trust; [chacah] my buckler, [magen] and the horn [qeren] of my
salvation, [yesha`] and my high tower. [misgab] KJV-Interlinear
2 The
Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I
take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. NASB
The rock, ‘cela,’ is a
high outcropping place on a cliff that might generally have a cave or a crevice
that provides a place of hiding and safety, that is not available on the lower
lands below. It is a place that is
difficult to see or locate or even get to, let alone discover by some
enemy. It is a place of security and
safety from predators, or scavengers, or hunters, or roving gangs, and such.
A fortress, ‘matsuwd,’ is
a castle, a defense, a strong place that is difficult if not impossible to
attack.
Deliverer, ‘palat,’ means
to escape, to carry away to safety.
God, ‘el,’ means
strength, power, almighty. There is no greater power or strength or ability
above or beyond God.
Strength, ‘tsuwr,’ is
similar to the rock just mentioned, but this refers to a sharp stone upon which
an adversary would be cut to pieces. It
is a refuge, a large boulder, signifying power and strength and security.
Trust, ‘chacah,’ means a
place to run to, to confide in, to seek refuge with peace of mind without
tension or worry.
Buckler, ‘magen,’ means small
shield, one that is easily moved or handled and used for defense and deflection
and counter action.
Horn, ‘qeren,’ comes from
the animals that have horns, that are used for defense and offense,
representing their power and ability to inflict fatal and permanent blows that
end a conflict.
Salvation, ‘yesha,’ means
deliverance, prosperity, safety. The
horn of salvation is a phrase used to describe God as the means of all
deliverance from all earthly adversarial circumstances, regardless of their
nature.
High tower, ‘misgab,’
refers to a high place that is inaccessible and therefore a perfect place of
safety.
In these descriptions,
God is all of this and far, far more.
In this world, there is
nothing and no one and no place that is comparable. Only God is the perfect
place of safety and defense and offense, and deliverance and peace and
prosperity.
And since God is not
physically here among us, we look to doctrine or our knowledge of His word in
order to gain access to these attributes and tools with which God guards and
protects us. Without doctrine, you do
not have Gods protection to its maximum potential. Without doctrine, you have only Gods common
grace which treats everyone nearly the same, but more or less as historical
filler. Historical filler is not the
place of choice in life.
Being the apple of Gods
eye is a far, far better position to live within because it comes with far
greater advantages.
