Isaiah 3:26
26 And her gates [pethach] shall lament ['anah] and
mourn; ['abal] and she being desolate [naqah] shall sit [yashab] upon the
ground. ['erets]KJV-Interlinear
26 And
her gates will lament and mourn; And deserted she will sit on the ground. NASB
Truth having been
ignored, the end result is captivity, immense suffering, immense humiliation, phenomenal
lamentation and grief, great anxiety and depression, and that is exactly what
is being portrayed here.
Her and she, is a
reference to Jerusalem. The city is
often referred to in the feminine being distinguished for its beauty and attributes
that are distinctly feminine. Song of Solomon
is a detailed study of the desirability and intense affection portrayed of the
female and her features.
However, when truth is
rejected, then beauty and desirability evaporates and is replaced with a
picture of a captive woman sitting in the dust, beauty lost, feminine
attributes vanished, and replaced with tremendous humiliation, grief, and
sorrow. Not only for the loss of the men
as described in the previous verse, but for her own feminine attributes of
beauty and seductivity, that have been described in many of the previous
verses.
And having been warned
over and over, again and again, the people, especially believers, consciously
turned away from God and truth, and turned proactively toward lies,
worldliness, external beautification accessories, and so forth, to the
exclusion of their own soul.
Jerusalem and Judah was
referred to way back since the first verse. The city and region having been
filled with spiritually negative people, replacing and diminishing the numbers
of those who were positive. As well as
replacing and diminishing truth and all that accompanies it.
The city gates represent
the commerce and life flow of a city.
This commerce and life, have ceased.
The public sitting on the
ground, represents the captive posture of extreme humiliation and extreme
sorrow.
The feminine gender
represents the soft and desirable and beauty attributes of what should be, but
now are not.
The result, a helpless
and humiliating situation of the worst possible kind imaginable. In war the men are brutally tortured and
killed, while the women who remain alive, are ravaged repeatedly with no one to
come to their aid, because there is no one available to come to their aid.
This is the picture. This is the price paid when doctrine is
disregarded.
These historical events
and circumstances have occurred in the past and continue to exist in varying
degrees, even in our present day in some parts of the world, but the ultimate
and by far the worst events of history, will occur in gruesome detail during
and at the end of the tribulation, which is still future. And all because a
world society simply rejects truth.
