Revelation 20:2
2 And [kai] he laid hold on [krateo] the dragon, [drakon] that old [archaios] serpent, [ophis] which [hos] is [esti] the Devil, [diabolos] and [kai] Satan, [Satanas] and [kai] bound [deo] him [autos] a thousand [chilioi] years, [etos] KJV-Interlinear
2 And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, NASB
Satan is identified clearly here as the dragon, first identified a dozen times in this book, Rev. 12:3,4,7,9,13,16,17; 13:1,2,4; 16:13.
The title serpent dates back to the Garden of Eden, Gen. 3:1-6, Gen. 2, 2 Cor 11:3.
The name devil means slanderer or malicious gossip, 1 Tim 3:11; 2 Tim 3:3; Titus 2:3, Rev. 12:10.
He is the father of lies, Jn 8:44.
The name Satan means adversary, and is used many, many times in scripture.
Satan is not now currently bound anywhere. Currently Satan plants lying hypocrites in the church, Acts 5:3, schemes against believers, 2 Cor 2:11; Eph 6:11, disguises himself as an angel of light to deceive people, 2 Cor 11:14, attacks believers, 2 Cor 12:7; Eph 4:27, and must be resisted, James 4:7, hinders those in the ministry, 1 Thess 2:18, leads believers astray, 1 Tim 5:15, he blinds the minds of unbelievers, 2 Cor 4:4, "is now working in the sons of disobedience," Eph 2:2, and holds unbelievers captive, 2 Tim 2:26, in his kingdom, Col 1:13.
These are all current activities of Satan. And he does not have to do these things directly himself, there are far too many people, absent of doctrine, that do his bidding for him.
No utopia nor Millennium can come into existence so long as Satan is around and functioning. So long as Satan is around, all of the sayings and cliché’s in the world (‘make love not war,’ ‘imagine a world without war,’ make peace not war,’ ‘coexist,’ and so forth) will never change things in this world.
Only fools cling to empty phrases. Only fools are clueless as to the real causes of trouble in the world. Only fools disregard truth, doctrine, Christ, and their spiritual life (as God defines it). And that is exactly how Satan likes it.
He is the leader of lies and the leader of fools. And, one day, he will be imprisoned for 1000 years so that his influence of deception cannot be applied during the reign of Christ.
Satan has wanted to be like the Most High for a long time now, but he cannot reshape the world, he cannot stop the continents from moving, he cannot prevent the repercussions of his own policies of evil.
And, he cannot prevent his own arrest and incarceration.
Although he is the single most brilliant and powerful angel (at one time), there is one who is more powerful than he, and through Christ, an angel will seize him, and chain him, and take him to the abyss to be locked up for 1000 years. And Satan will not be able to prevent it.
