17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, "Come, assemble for the great supper of God; NASB
God has used angels as messengers throughout history and certainly we have seen many of them being used in this book. And so, another angel stands in the sun.
This is a phrase which means that the angel stands in a conspicuous place where all can see, where all can view and hear his message. This is a literal angel but not the literal standing in the sun. The angel is standing in the light as opposed to in the darkness. He can be both seen and heard.
This time however, the audience is not humanity, but the scavengers, the birds on planet earth.
And the message is not just a message, but an invitation to come to dinner. And the dinner that is about to be prepared will consist of the carnage of Armageddon.
So, once again, the angel declares victory over the wicked of the earth, resulting in their death.
But this death will be so vast and far spread throughout the world, that even while the birds are devouring the corpses of the dead, it will still take seven months to bury all of the dead, Eze. 39:12.
And even after that, when people begin traveling around the world, and see the bones of the dead, then they will mark them so that others can bury them. The others, who do the burying, will have that as their occupation for burying the dead, Exe. 39:15.
The great supper is just that, the greatest feast for the scavengers of the world, ever in history. There will never be another feast such as this one, because this will be the greatest carnage, due to the destruction of the largest group of wicked people ever assembled, at one time, in history.
