Isaiah 28:20

20 For the bed [matstsa`] is shorter [qatsar] than that a man can stretch [sara`] himself on it: and the covering [maccekah] narrower [tsarar] than that he can wrap [kanac] himself in it.   KJV-Interlinear

20 For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on, and the covering too narrow to wrap oneself in.   ESV

An expression that is commonly applied to people who complain or have excuse after excuse.  You have made your bed, so now you must lay in it.

And so it is.  God expresses this sentiment through Isaiah.

The bed is too short.  The blanket is too small.  Both are inadequate to meet their needs. Both indicate that the bed and cover are inadequate and will not bring sleep, or rest, or contentment.

And the principle is, when you spend your energy and efforts on something that is false, then you will never obtain the intended results.

The lies of this world will not bring contentment.
The lies of this world will not bring satisfaction.
The lies of this world will not bring accomplishment
Your efforts from this world will render no reward and no credit, to you.

Disregard of God, Christ, doctrine, and therefore your overall spiritual life, are nothing more than a pursuit of a short bed and a small blanket.  They will accomplish nothing and will give you no satisfaction.

While you try as you may, to lay down and wrap yourself up within your chosen pattern of life, which is contrary to Gods will, then you will be left with nothing.  You will not attain anything that you are pursuing.
