10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, NASB
As John writes this verse, the old universe, the old earth, is now gone, and he is viewing a brand new universe.
We cannot presume that the new earth and universe will be anything like the one we have now. For the simple reason that John has to be taken to an extremely high vantage point in order to see the entire new city of Jerusalem.
Likewise, we have to get outside of the box, in order to conjure up images in our own imagination as to the make up of the new universe. Remember, at that future time, we will be in resurrection bodies, indestructible and not in need of any of the things, we take for granted today.
Today we need food and water, and air to exist. We live in the world with gravity, and are pretty much bound to the surface of this planet. Sure we have a space exploration program, we have had men on the moon and probably will have someone on Mars in the next thirty years or so, but the bulk of the population of humanity will be right here on the earth. We will keep on doing what we have been doing, for the last six thousand years or so.
But for now, John is taken to a high elevation, in order that he might be able to see the City of God, Jerusalem.
This city will become the center of the new universe. Its light will come from the source of Gods glory, which is the sum total of His essence. It will be so bright, there will be no need for a sun or moon or stars to provide light. Isa 60:19. This city of God will light up the entirety of the new universe. Its light will emanate from within the city, and from without to the entire expanse of the universe.
In the new universe, Gods glory will be unlimited and unconfined.
The architect and builder of this city, is God, Heb. 11:10. The real and the true Jerusalem, is already in Heaven, and is there waiting for the correct time to descend down into the new universe.
The new universe will be a new creation. Heaven is not going to be re-created.
Gods full expression of His glory will be manifested in the new city of Jerusalem. The sum total of of His attributes are illuminated in His glory and in His Son, John 17:24, Ex 33:18-19, 13:21; 19:18; 24:17; 34:29-30,35; 40:34; 1 Kings 8:10-11; Ps 104:2; Isa 4:5; Ezek 10:4; Hab 3:3-4; Luke 2:9, Matt 17:2; 24:27,30; 1 Tim 6:16.
