Revelation 18:19
19 And [kai] they cast [ballo] dust [choos] on [epi] their [autos] heads, [kephale] and [kai] cried, [krazo] weeping [klaio] and [kai] wailing, [pentheo] saying, [lego] Alas, [ouai] alas, [ouai] that great [megas] city, [polis] wherein [en] [hos] were made rich [plouteo] all [pas] that had [echo] ships [ploion] in [en] the sea [thalassa] by reason of [ek] her [autos] costliness [timiotes]! for [hoti] in one [mia] hour [hora] is she made desolate. [eremoo]KJV-Interlinear
19 "And they threw dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying, 'Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea became rich by her wealth, for in one hour she has been laid waste!' NASB
Throwing dust on ones head is an expression of extreme grief, Josh 7:6; 1 Sam 4:12; 2 Sam 1:2; 15:32; Job 2:12; Lam 2:10; Ezek 27:30.
Weeping and mourning are the expressions of the souls of the general population. Nothing is mentioned of repentance toward God. Only grief over the loss of business and worldly wealth, that has come out of the policies of Satan, namely Babylon, which is the expression of worldliness, among other things which we have studied.
The sins are great, the arrogance is great, the lusts are great. They all stack up as high as heaven, as was mentioned earlier. And these things of wickedness amount to the worst in all of human history.
And yet people do not see their flaws, but they do see the wealth they have. They do not see the masses who suffered so that the few can possess their wealth. They do not see the errors of their ways, in any form, even as the world around them is collapsing.
And they too, even mention that the great system by which they lived, was gone in an unusually short space of time.
How can anything so great, disappear so quickly? How can anything so stable, destabilize so quickly? How can anything so undefeatable, be defeated so quickly? How can anything so productive, become so unproductive so quickly?
And the answer is of course that these characteristics are all false. Satan’s systems are empty, lacking substance, lacking truth, and therefore consist of nothing.
