13 I give [paraggello] thee [soi] charge [paraggello] in the sight [enopion] of God, [theos] who [ho] quickeneth [zoopoieo] all things, [pas] and [kai] before Christ [Christos] Jesus, [Iesous] who [ho] before [epi] Pontius [Pontios] Pilate [Pilatos] witnessed [martureo] a good [kalos] confession; [homologia] KJV-Interlinear
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, NASB
‘I charge you,’ are words spoken by Paul to Timothy, but this is the Word of God, whose words in total are spoken to each one of us individually.
In the next verse, we will see what we are being charged with, namely the entire content of the scriptures, the truths which God has given to us all, but for now the word for charge, ‘paraggello,’ is a dramatic order, a command, a declaration. The prefix, ‘para,’ meaning before all things, the first in priorities, and the main body, ‘ago,’ and ‘aggelos,’ meaning to drive forward, or to lead.
In one sense, the pastor or teacher is to lead his listeners forward, and in another sense, the listeners are to drive themselves forward through self motivation, with regard to their spiritual lives.
For most folks, self motivation is severely lacking. They do not bother to crack open the Bible let alone search out its message. Life is filled up with far too many distractions that replace the importance of ones spiritual life, with the many worldly activities, wants and desires that fill up most folks lives.
And yet here we have a command, an order, of which if we disobey it, we will suffer the harsh consequences of that disobedience – loss or death. In the military, when an order is disobeyed (a lawful order), then the soldier is shot. In the spiritual life, when Gods commands are disobeyed, then the person, suffers the consequences.
And this is how you can determine just how important God, Christ, doctrine and your spiritual life, are to you. Do you have to have someone place it in front of you day after day, otherwise you would ignore it? Or, do you have the motivation, the self motivation, and discipline to enter into a daily study, and want to learn and grow to become the most that you can be.
Some people in professions are successful because they have imagination. They see themselves within their minds, they imagine themselves performing in their vocation or activity. They practice and prepare certainly, but more than that, they use their imagination and dream, so to speak, to visualize themselves in doing with perfection, that thing they want to do. And then when they actually go out into the world and perform (whatever it is), they use that inner review, to help them to succeed. They are motivated. They have a passion for what they do. They pursue it because it files up or completes their life.
You too, can use this method to improve your chosen activity, but more important, you should use it to help establish your, self-motivation, for your spiritual life.
The Bible has made many promises for you, but they will not apply unless you do your part, and that part is stated in these two verses.
Paul states ‘before God,’ and ‘in the sight of Jesus Christ.’
God is the source of all life, ‘quickeneth.’ And Jesus Christ testified before Pilate, as to His true identity.
The Bible is this same testimony for you.
Will you believe it, or will you dismiss it as Pilate did.
