Galatians 4:26

Galatians 4:26

26 But [de] Jerusalem [Hierousalem] which is above [ano] is [esti] free [eleutheros], which [hostis] is [esti] the mother [meter] of us [hemon] all [pas]. KJV-Interlinear

26 But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother. NASB

Whereas, Mt. Sinai is of this world and represents the works and burdens and enslavement of humanity, then Jerusalem has its origin in heaven and represents the work of God and the promise from God resulting in the ultimate freedom that is available to all of humanity that believes.

Belief is a non-meritorious thought, for which we can claim no credit for merely thinking. Thinking is effortless and does not constitute any form of work on our part.  To merely listen and learn and think, is our role, whereas God has already done all of the work necessary for salvation, as well all of the work that is needed for our spiritual function and growth.

The contrast here is between the freedom of Gods design, versus the slavery of mans design.

Sarah was the legitimate wife and therefore the legitimate mother of her offspring which God promised.  Hagar was not the source or the means of Gods promise.

The line of Christ came through Sarah, not through Hagar.  And, even though Abraham is the common father, the line of promise came through Sarah, not Hagar.

Similarly, the line of your blessing comes through faith which is by means of Gods promise, and not of works.  Works are of mans design.  Faith is of Gods design.

God has already done all of the work necessary, and to reinvent works on ones own, is an insult toward God as well as total stupidity.

How can one presume that you can do something better than God?

How can one adopt a different method of spirituality than that designed by God?

And of course arrogance is the basis for all departures from Gods design.

Then why would anyone pursue something that is definitely a failure, when Gods method is a sure success?

And again that answer is that arrogance clouds the judgment and reasoning of the individual, making ones own methods out to be better or equivalent or at least as good as Gods methods, and therefore the assumption is that they are acceptable to God as a viable and legitimate substitute.  And that is why most people fail.
