2 Timothy 1:7
7 For [gar] God [theos] hath [didomi] not [ou] given [didomi] us [hemin] the spirit [pneuma] of fear; [deilia] but [alla] of power, [dunamis] and [kai] of love, [agape] and [kai] of a sound mind. [sophronismos] KJV-Interlinear
7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. NASB
Fear, ‘deilia,’ means timidity, uncertainty, embarrassment, insecurity, and that is exactly what God has not provided.
God provided in eternity past, all of the resources that any of us will ever need, when we need them.
Those resources come through the knowledge of doctrine. Obviously, if you never learn doctrine, then you will lack those resources when you need them. And that in itself is cause to worry.
However, when doctrine is learned, then that worry is replaced with certainty and security, and confidence. And in that confidence is found the power of doctrine.
Power, ‘dunamis,’ means great force, but this is not a raw explosive force, but an effective and productive and directed energy.
Love, ‘agape,’ means the details, principles, precepts of doctrine. There are four words for love in the Bible and this one relates to the knowledge of principle. Unfortunately too many folks view this word for love as an emotional or selfless attitude, without substance. And that, it is not. ‘Agape’ is the nuts and bolts of knowledge of the spiritual life.
Sound mind, ‘sophronismos,’ is the self controlled discipline of ones mind, over which a person runs their own life within the boundaries set out by doctrine.
Therefore, knowledge of doctrine, produces understanding and wisdom, which clarifies life and truth and the facts in life that lay before us all. It is the discernment and direction by which a person can pursue the proper course toward the completion and maximization of their own life and existence.
That in turn produces confidence, and assurance, and the security of ones life, and produces a relaxed inner mental attitude.
And that in turn gives you power over fear. Nothing in this world can make you afraid, because your life comes with a greater plan and destiny, controlled by God, and you know it.
God will put you through a training course in life. He teaches us through doctrine, and then He tests us through life's experiences. Sometimes we pass, and sometimes we fail. But in every case, God is always in control over our lives and it is His plan that will play itself out for our lives, not our plans.
Sometimes we just have to learn things over and over again, before we get it. And by sticking with your daily studies, then sooner or later, you will pass every test thrown at you. And that makes for a great story, your life’s story.
