Ephesians 5:24
24 Therefore [alla] as [hosper] the church [ekklesia] is
subject [hupotasso] unto Christ, [Christos] so [houto] [kai] let the wives [gune] be to
their own [idios] husbands [aner] in [en] every thing. [pas] KJV-Interlinear
24 But
as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their
husbands in everything. NASB
Here the priorities of
life are established.
God is always first, and
all believers, whether male or female, must place themselves under subjection
to Gods will regardless of anything else in life.
Gods will is that you
function in your spiritual life and grow up spiritually. Anything else that you do in life, whether
climbing of mountains, digging ditches, performing brain surgery, or changing
diapers, comes secondary to and parallel with your spiritual life.
You are here to prepare
for your eternal life. Whatever it is
that you do in this life, is there serving as the logistical support and
infrastructure of you and yours, in this life while you prepare spiritually.
You concentrate on our
job in order to support yourself and your family and others as needed in this
life, while at the same time you should be concentrating on your spiritual
studies, your daily studies, that help prepare you for eternity.
So, whether you are young
or old, male or female, God is your first priority and obligation.
Second, comes that
obligation which God has imposed on us all.
We have already studied that the husbands role is to place himself last
and his family first. With his
authority, comes responsibility and his family is more important than self.
Also, second in line for
the wife, is her husband. She is to place herself last as well, but her primary
responsibility is not to her children, even though she has a principle role in their
upbringing, but her husband is to be her primary focus and objective in life.
In ‘everything,’ makes it
clear that her role is her husband.
In the spiritual life,
Christ is the head and authority and foundation of all believers. Christ is the
basis of all of Christianity.
And we all look to Him,
for our personal relationship to God, and to doctrine for our personal growth
and production in our spiritual life.
So too, the wife, looks
to her husband as he is the foundation of the family. So in all things she is to care for him, as
he is to care for his family. While the
husbands role is more for guidance and example for the family, the wife’s role
toward her husband is a more intimate role due to their relationship as two
persons being in effect one unit.
Christ went to great
extremes for the Church. The husband is
to go to great extremes for his family.
The wife is to go to great extremes for her husband. This principle, when made a part of your
life, makes for a phenomenal relationship that cannot ever be broken, nor can
it fail.
