Psalm 12:2
2 They speak [dabar] vanity [shav'] every one ['iysh] with his
neighbour: [rea`] with flattering [chelqah] lips [saphah] and with a
double [leb] heart [leb] do they speak. [dabar] KJV-Interlinear
2 They
speak falsehood to one another; With flattering lips and with a double heart
they speak. NASB
There is no such thing as
honor among thieves.
A thief will lie and
cheat another thief just as he would a naïve victim.
But are we speaking of
thieves here? No.
The context is the
wicked, and more specifically those believers who once were ‘godly,’ but now
are not.
When each person believes
in Christ, for the very first time, that is the moment of their salvation. Salvation is permanent and insures the person
a place in heaven with God, forever.
At that moment, in that
instant, they are in fellowship, and therefore categorized as godly. So every believer is in fellowship and
classified as ‘godly’ at least once in their life if only at the moment of
their salvation.
But once a person commits
a sin, which could occur anytime after that moment of salvation, perhaps a few
minutes later or even longer after, then they are out of fellowship and
therefore classified as ungodly, or wicked, or unbeliever imitators, or any
number of synonyms of similar meaning.
When a person persists in
their Bible study, they learn of confession, use it, get back into fellowship,
and their spiritual life functions as it should.
When a person lapses in
their studies, they forget confession (if they ever learn of it), remain out of
fellowship and their spiritual life does not function.
They lapse into the arena
of the wicked, and sooner or later as stated in verse one, they cease, they
fail, they fall from grace, as it were.
The longer time spent in this sphere, the more entrenched they become in
the world of the worldly and the opinions of the worldly.
Since the world of the
wicked is basically the world of lies, then their pattern of life follows that
course. And as we all know, or should know,
lies are not reliable, have no confidence, produce nothing, and so forth.
And as such, lies breed
further lies and deceit, and discord in society. People begin to speak one thing while
thinking another. Thus they are hypocrites,
and said to be double minder, or as stated here, speak with a double
heart.
They say one thing which
may be heard outwardly, that which they want to be heard, but they are thinking
another thing inwardly, which is their real intent.
Deut. 25:13 calls it a
stone and a stone. This is where a
deceitful person uses one stone with which to make purchases and a different
stone with which to sell, stating that they are both of the same weight, which
they are not. So he cheats in effect.
And that is what a double
minded person does. They cheat in
life.
They cheat themselves by pursuing
lies rather than truth, and they cheat others by means of their pattern of life
in lies.
This verse calls them
double hearted. The heart is typically
used to describe the circulating function of the soul. It is the circulation of ongoing thought,
just as the heart is in constant pumping action in the physical body.
The wicked person lives a
life of constant lies, constant deceit, in a constant fog wherein they cannot
even see the error of their own ways.
That makes them an easy target for the lies of the world in the form of
philosophy, opinion, politics, religion, social dysfunction, and so forth.
