2 And [kai] immediately [eutheos] I was [ginomai] in [en] the spirit: [pneuma] and, [kai] behold, [idou] a throne [thronos] was set [keimai] in [en] heaven, [ouranos] and [kai] one sat [kathemai] on [epi] the throne. [thronos] KJV-Interlinear

2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne. NASB

John was immediately in the Spirit. This is a reference to his spiritual state, verses a carnal state. Being in the Spirit, is an expression for being in fellowship, having confessed sins and therefore in a sinless state, he (and anyone) is qualified to be under the control of the Holy Spirit and having access directly to and with God.

Apart from your fellowship status, your spiritual life does not function. It is offline so to speak. Therefore, confession is a mandated function so that you will be in fellowship, or as stated here, ‘in the spirit.’

There are several detailed special studies in the study library on this topic (confession, fellowship). A more in-depth study is available in the 1, 2, and 3 John studies.

John was in the Spirit, in fellowship, a function which God produces, and then he was in heaven immediately.

And behold, ‘idou,’ look, see, fix your sight with astonishment and awe.

The first thing that John saw was the throne of God.

Now, the throne is not a single piece of furniture, but the entire realm of God. This could be stated as Gods dominion. Other references to Gods throne are found in Psa 11:4; 103:19; Isa 66:1.

The throne is found in the temple of God, Rev. 7:15; 11:19; 14:15,17; 15:6-8; 16:17.

And the temple of God, is God Himself, Rev 21:22.

The throne was said to be standing or set, ‘keimai,’ which means to be established and permanent. This is not a reference to furniture standing on legs or anything of that nature. This is the nature of Gods realm, His sovereignty, His authority, His essence in its entirety. God is permanent, immovable, and will never be removed or replaced.

Sitting is an expression for ‘in charge.’

The first thing that comes to mind is Gods sovereign control over all that is.

And that is probably one of the more important aspects of knowing God, because when we get to the descriptions of the horrors that are going to occur in the Tribulation, and when those people actually experience them, then having God (Christ) as their only hope, will prove to be their only link to sanity and life, for their world will be literally falling apart.

We have seen six major earthquakes in just two months. You are probably only aware of Haiti and Chile, because they are the only ones that had a loss of life. For anyone who lives in the midst of a huge disaster, the usual stabilities of life, do not exist.

Some will turn to God, while others will turn to complaints.

But in heaven, God is on His throne (figuratively speaking), God is in power and God has everything under control.

On this earth, Satan is in charge and nothing is under control.
