4 He is proud, [tuphoo] knowing [epistamai] nothing, [medeis] but [alla] doting [noseo] about [peri] questions [zetesis] and [kai] strifes of words, [logomachia] whereof [ek] [hos] cometh [ginomai] envy, [phthonos] strife, [eris] railings, [blasphemia] evil [poneros] surmisings, [huponoia] KJV-Interlinear

4 he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, NASB

Truth stands on its own and is readily apparent to anyone who has an objective view of it.

Any other opinion is nothing more than the invention of conjecture with no basis in fact. And yet, there are those who will invent theories, if only to create discussions, debates and arguments over their theories or beliefs.

All religions fall into this category of thinking. All cults fall into this category of thinking. All philosophies fall into this category of thinking.

Conceited, ‘tuphoo,’ means smoke, or air filled with nothing useful, inflated, high minded, proud, arrogant.

To understand nothing, means that the person proposing some untruth, lacks the ability to recognize the repercussions of their arguments. They may certainly know the difference between truth and lies, but their agenda is not in promoting truth, but in promoting themselves. They have a high opinion of their own intelligence, scholarship, insights, and presume that their arguments are legitimate discussions of their own intellectual discoveries.

Truth is obvious to anyone who is objective.

Therefore, if truth is rejected, then the argument has to be over words, their meanings, and to raised questions concerning alternate opinions that cannot easily be proved.

For example, no human was around when the universe was created, therefore there is no direct human witness. We do not have any video of its creation, and therefore when evolution is raised, there is no hard evidence differentiating between the two. Faith is all we have to go on, that the Bible is true, and that impossible to prove evolution theories, are not true.

No one can prove the precise date of Jesus’ birth, or the crucifixion, and yet we believe in Him and His sacrifice.

Stories galore, abound regarding who is to blame for Jesus’ execution, as to His relationships with others, whether or not He had a wife or even children, as to the power of various ‘sacred’ articles (the cup, the shroud, etc.). And all of these stories are mere inventions or fantasies so as to bring doubt or ambiguity into peoples’ view of Christianity.

Opponents argue over words and their definitions. They argue just for the sake of argument. And they argue only because they are arrogant. They want attention directed at them and not at the truth of the Bible. Their arguments will be ambiguous, and impossible to prove. Their arguments will be circular in order to avoid factual attachment to reality. They will use your own words as though they were theirs. And all the while, their words are nothing more than empty air.

By pursuing recognition for themselves, they reject the idea that the Bible can bring them recognition and success through faith. They deeply desire credit for themselves, where the Bible gives all credit to Christ, making man a mere beneficiary of His work and plan.

Their attacks against truth, are intended to confuse and raise doubt in others, thus destroying others’ opportunities for understanding and a better life, rather than in helping people to understand the truth of a matter, and giving others an opportunity for a better life.

Those who reject truth, have lust desires for themselves, and do not care for the life of others.
