6 But [de] godliness [eusebeia] with [meta] contentment [autarkeia] is [esti] great [megas] gain. [porismos] KJV-Interlinear

6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment. NASB

Godliness means to be God like. And since we are to be God like, then we need to understand exactly what that means.

Obviously we cannot be omnipresent or omnipotent, so this has nothing to do with Gods attributes that man cannot attain. But it is possible for man to become perfect in character and behavior and thinking, if man will simply follow the path prescribed by God, for accomplishing a perfect life – a sin free life in other words.

But how is that possible?

Well, Jesus Christ solved the problem of sin for us all, when He went to the Cross and paid the price for sin and death. That makes sin and death no longer a hold of any kind over any of us.

However, there is still the question of forgiveness and that means that we have to acknowledge our flaws, sins, failures, etc., before God, in order to receive forgiveness.

But why is that. Since Christ paid for sin, then why do we need to be forgiven?

And that is really a simply question to answer.

We are human and subject to the flaws of humanity. We all sin by choice, even knowing that Christ has paid its price. So, when we sin, we are acting just like a misbehaving child. That requires discipline and/or forgiveness, depending on how stubborn we are in acknowledging our sins to God.

For some folks, doing whatever they want, seems perfectly right to them, even if what they do is wrong.

But before God, which is where we are all standing, no matter if we believe it or not, but we are all on notice that bad behavior will not go unpunished.

God is perfect and God is the source of life in this entire universe. In order to live with God, as we will eventually do, we have to become perfect, and that is where our ‘godliness’ enters into the picture of our life.

Our ‘spiritual life’ is another phrase for the concept of ‘godliness.’

We have only two choices, that of a carnal life or that of a spiritual life. The two are separated only by our confession of sins to God the Father. This of course only applies to believers, and not to unbelievers. The single question for unbelievers is whether or not they will believe in Christ. Until they believe, they have no spiritual life, nor even access to it.

So, godliness, a lifestyle of sinless perfection, is accomplished through confession. But there is one more part to the spiritual life, and that is growth, or growing up.

‘Accompanied by contentment.’

How does one become content? Through a sense of security.

And how does one gain a sense of security? By some form of success, prosperity, or happiness.

And how does one become successful, prosperous, or happy? By receiving blessings from some permanent source, making that blessing likewise permanent.

And what is that permanent source? Jesus Christ.

So, how do you persuade Christ to bless you? By obeying His mandates.

And what are His mandates? Well, His first and foremost mandate is to become godly, through contentment.

And just how do we accomplish that? ‘Study to show thyself approved (mature), rightly dividing (studying), the word of Truth.’

Your path to the fullness and completeness and most successful and prosperous and happiness and secure and contentment in your life, starts (and continues) with a daily study of the Bible.

And what is the result? ‘Great gain.’

Great, here means infinite. And gain means wealth.

Who do you know in this world that has infinite wealth? No one. But we do have examples of billionaires, and to most of us, that is a lot. Certainly more than most of us will ever see even in several lifetimes.

And yet, Christ has a vast treasure waiting for each one of us, in heaven. A treasure that would cause even a billionaire to drool.

While promoters of false doctrines try to accomplish their treasure through deceit and empty lies, you only have to study truth day by day, throughout your life, and those simple words written on the page will bring you to phenomenal treasures, beyond your, or anyone's, wildest dreams.
