Isaiah 3:17
17 Therefore the Lord ['Adonay] will smite with a scab [caphach] the crown of the head [qodqod] of the daughters [bath] of
Zion, [Tsiyown] and the LORD [Yahovah] will discover [`arah] their
secret parts. [poth] KJV-Interlinear
17
Therefore the Lord will afflict the scalp of the daughters of Zion with scabs,
And the Lord will make their foreheads bare." NASB
From the previous verse,
the evil doers of the world walk through life with tremendous arrogance, adorn
and accessorize themselves with outward trinkets and clothing. Their outward presentation is their pride and
joy and the substance of their self-worth.
Their inner self, the
content of their soul, is driven by the emptiness of the arrogance in which they
have invested their life.
To smite with a scab, is
an expression that describes the action that a victor in war, does to those
that they have defeated and taken prisoner in battle. In some instances the head is shaved as a
sign of the humility of defeat. In other
instances the prisoners are stripped naked and forced to march in that embarrassing
and humbled posture.
For men it is bad enough,
but for women, it is extremely humiliating, for women that are captured in war,
the uses they are put to are degrading if not worse. And here Isaiah expresses the action of God
toward those he will defeat, in the worst possible picture.
However, God is not
interested in the outer appearance, but using this expression, God strips away
the outer phoniness and makes public the inner emptiness of their arrogance.
Within, there is
nothing. Their secret parts, is the true
content of their self-worth, which is nothing.
Driven by arrogance and
assuming superiority, they are stripped bare to reveal their true
worthlessness.
You should never want to
be associated with this type of defeat in life, for setting yourself against
God, sets you up for the most humiliating summary and conclusion of your life.
