Revelation 18:16

16 And [kai] saying, [lego] Alas, [ouai] alas, [ouai] that great [megas] city, [polis] that was clothed in [periballo] fine linen, [bussinos] and [kai] purple, [porphurous] and [kai] scarlet, [kokkinos] and [kai] decked [chrusoo] with [en] gold, [chrusos] and [kai] precious [timios] stones, [lithos] and [kai] pearls [margarites]! KJV-Interlinear

16 saying,' Woe, woe, the great city, she who was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls; NASB

The weeping and mourning are not for Babylon, but for themselves.  The merchants, the consumers, the leadership, all people great and small, will be thinking only of themselves, of their loss, of the way things were, but are now no more.

But their idea of the way things were is a short memory version of how things were (how they wanted things to be for their own benefit) during the reign of the anti-christ, earlier on, but lacking the reality of how things really were as the economies of the world declined.

Babylon is described from their perspective.  They see the outer presentation of Babylon.  Earlier the bible described the inner Babylon.

The outer is clothed in all manner of enticements and things of beauty and desirable.

The inner is the working of the prostitute, and totally corrupt.

The outer is made up of things that people strive for, fine clothes, jewelry, expressions of riches and wealth.  And from those things, the idea of security and happiness.

But surrounded by those things, is an inner soul of corruption.  You can wrap fine things around a rotten piece of meat, but they will not keep it fresh nor make it fresh.  The rot continues and eventually even the wrappings fall to the ground.

In contrast, Bible doctrine, a thing which you cannot see, but is manifested in words and thought, is able to accomplish everything that the world cannot accomplish.

Doctrine can make pure that which was impure, can make secure that which was insecure, can make wealthy that which was poor, can make fulfilling that which was empty.

Psalm 7:12

Copyright Ó 2011 J. Neely
Psalm 7:12

12 If he turn [shuwb] not, he will whet [latash] his sword; [chereb] he hath bent [darak] his bow, [qesheth] and made it ready. [kuwn] KJV-Interlinear

12 If a man does not repent, He will sharpen His sword; He has bent His bow and made it ready. NASB

If the wicked person does not change his ways, then punishment is close behind.

The wicked is the unbeliever who has rejected or is indifferent toward salvation.

The wicked is the believer who lives their life, out of fellowship.

Both categories of wicked, are those who practice evil, sin, crime, self-righteousness, carnality, and so forth.  Both categories of wicked live their lives out of fellowship.  The believer by refusing to confess on a regular basis.  The unbeliever who lacks salvation and therefore by default does not have a spiritual life.

God is constantly ready moment by moment, continually ready to apply judgment or discipline, whichever is appropriate.

To whet the sword means to keep it in a state of being sharp.

To bend the bow, means to have it ready to fire.

Bow weapons are always kept in a state of readiness.  The sword is for those disciplines that are up close and personal.  The bow is for disciplines that are more distant.

In either case, the wicked individual is always in range of Gods weapons.  No one can escape.

You and your life are always under constant scrutiny, and God applies discipline and/or judgment as it is appropriate for you.

The individual who turns not, that is, does not change his ways (does not repent), then punishment is not far away.

Psalm 7:11

Copyright Ó 2011 J. Neely
Psalm 7:11

11 God ['elohiym] judgeth [shaphat] the righteous, [tsaddiyq] and God ['el] is angry [za`am] with the wicked every day. [yowm] KJV-Interlinear

11 God is a righteous judge, And a God who has indignation every day. NASB

Judgeth, ‘shaphat,’ means to judge, to vindicate, to govern with boundaries, to defend, to execute.  And when used in reference to those who have believed in Him, namely the righteous, then God protects those who have believed in Him, by means of the application of His justice.

He has applied righteousness and justice, and issues judgment accordingly, in order to vindicate, protect and avenge those who subscribe to His will.

By contrast, He applies his judgment against the evil, or wicked people, because of their rejection of truth.  And thus applies this policy of rejection of evil, every day.

Everyday means continually.

God is the same yesterday, today and forever.  His policies are consistent and do not change for any reason.

His policies are consistent with regard to believers, for their stability and security and protection (eternal security).

His policies are consistent with regard to the wicked.

The wicked, fall into two categories.

First there are unbelievers, who by definition are wicked and never anything else.

Second there are believers who often times imitate unbelievers by means of their disinterested attitude toward doctrine.  These are righteous in the sense that they are saved, but wicked in the sense that their lives function out of fellowship and outside of the will of God.  They pursue sin, in other words.

God applies discipline against wicked believers (out of fellowship believers), and judgment against unbelievers.

Discipline is intended to bring believers back into fellowship and a functional spiritual life.

Judgment is intended to bring unbelievers to faith in Christ, thus escaping the permanency of the Lake of Fire.

At death, those believers who did not respond to discipline, lose out on additional eternal blessings (reward), even though they are still in heaven.

At death, unbelievers lose everything and worse, forever.

In every case, God is consistent and fair in how He deals with everyone.

Revelation 18:15

Copyright Ó 2011 J. Neely
Revelation 18:15

15 The merchants [emporos] of these things, [touton] which [ho] were made rich [plouteo] by [apo] her, [autos] shall stand [histemi] afar [makrothen] off [apo] for [dia] the fear [phobos] of her [autos] torment, [basanismos] weeping [klaio] and [kai] wailing, [pentheo] KJV-Interlinear

15 "The merchants of these things, who became rich from her, will stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, NASB

The general population, especially those who gained from the worldly systems, and that includes just about everyone, since everyone gains in some sense, one way or another, even if it is only the perception of a gain, will feel the remorse of their loss.

But only to a certain point.

Babylon is the ‘her’ that has collapsed.  Identified way back in verse one, it is the world system or the cosmos diabolicus, or the plan of Satan which has been promoted by man and commanded by Satan in these final weeks and months and even years of the Tribulation.

But although in tears over their loss, notice that all back away and do not want to be identified with the collapse.  This is the classic, ‘I am not to blame.’

Although embracing and promoting and supporting the world systems put in place by the anti-christ, systems that gave these people place, status, elitism, wealth and such, when push comes to shove, they all run like rats, not wanting to be blamed for the disaster.  ‘Not my fault.’

The fear of Babylons torment, is blame, finding someone to blame.  Initially the Jews were to blame, then the Christians were to blame, and then anyone who happened to be close by was a legitimate scapegoat.

So what does this do, it sets up everyone for pointing fingers at everyone else.  The rats run and the comradely of evil turns against itself.

Do you know what this is all going to lead up to?

Revelation 18:14

Copyright Ó 2011 J. Neely
Revelation 18:14

14 And [kai] the fruits [opora] that thy [sou] soul [psuche] lusted after [epithumia] are departed [aperchomai] from [apo] thee, [sou] and [kai] all things [pas] which [ho] were dainty [liparos] and [kai] goodly [lampros] are departed [aperchomai] from [apo] thee, [sou] and [kai] thou shalt find [heurisko] them [autos] no more [ouketi] at all. [ou me] KJV-Interlinear

14 "And the fruit you long for has gone from you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and men will no longer find them. NASB

We have already studied the list of things, that will fade out of existence, but this verse is not just a continuation of the list, it reveals a much stronger problem.

There are two words in this verse that are of interest.

First, the words for dainty and goodly, ‘liparos,’ and ‘lampros.’  These are general references to things, possessions of all kinds.

And second, the word for no more, ‘ouketi.’  This in the Greek is a double, double negative, which is an extremely strong reference meaning never ever again.

The merchants, and people in general, lusted, desired, made important to themselves more than anything else, the ‘things’ of life.

Their possessions were more important to them than anything else.  These included various foods, ‘fruits,’ which is also a reference to things of desire.

Possessions were as desirable foods, to be possessed, adored, gazed upon, and consumed into the mind.  Precious fruits are eaten, smelled, tasted, and there is never enough of a fresh and juicy fruit of ones love.  And so too are the possessions of man.

But what humanity will come to want, and will replace their spiritual life with, are possessions which are at best temporary.

A fruit is smelled, tasted, enjoyed and swallowed, and then its affect is lost. It is passed through the body and then discharged with obvious results.  So too are mans possessions.

The general population at the end of the Tribulation, will have their things, and then they will be gone, and this time, gone forever.  They will never have anything ever again, forever.  And so their tears will flow for their loss of things now.  Totally ignoring their option to believe in Christ, and change all of that.

Never mind they have lost something far, even infinitely greater, their spiritual life, but their minds are set upon that which is temporary and was never designed to last forever.

They cry over the dust, and disregard the diamonds they could have owned forever.
